Primo Hoagies

Slightly better than Wawa hoagies but still not as good as other mom-​and-​pop places, Primos is an acceptable chain alternative, even if the prices are a little high.
So yeah I said it — Primo hoagies are slightly better than Wawa hoagies. It’s not by much though, and you’re paying extra for that slightly higher quality. The service is somewhere around Subway-​esque (polite and efficient but lacking the personality of other places), and it’s better to call ahead than risk a long line at the counter. I even like this place better than Capriotti’s, as Primo offers much more options including several spicy hoagie options (The Diablos). I’ll certainly be back.

I’m a fan of Primo’s original South Philly location and have frequented it for years. So when I heard one was opening up in Ardmore, I was pretty stoked. A little slice of South Philly heaven for the ‘burbs? Yes, please!
My joy was short-​lived, though. Despite bearing the legendary name, mostly everything I’ve come to know and expect from the South Philly location has been noticeably absent upon each and every visit to the Ardmore place.
It’s not just the rolls, which sometimes taste old and stale. It’s the staff. I’m thick-​skinned, to an extent, as far as staff-​related mishaps go. I can get past a little bit of rudeness as long as there is competency and a great product. Here, they’re forever screwing up my sandwich order in epic ways, and it’ll be a matter of really simple stuff, like a cheese hoagie. I’ve been given a roll stuffed with cheese and mayo — no lettuce, tomato, or onion as requested. And that’s just nasty. The same thing has happened with a turkey hoagie. It showed up to my door nearly naked, disgracing the Primo’s good name and shatting upon their legacy.
On the turkey Schwartzie, my Russian dressing was forgotten, so the sandwich was ridiculously dry and I had to pull out some Hellman’s from the back of my fridge to remedy the problem. Hey, desperate times call for desperate measures.
I gave the chicken cutlet a chance twice and it was two times too many. In both cases, the cutlet was soggy and bland and tasted as if it had been through the electromagnetic radiation wringer (aka, the microwave). Poor little desecrated thing. Hot sauce and bleu cheese did not make this boo boo better. Neither did marinara sauce and melted provo.
So yeah. Despite Primo being a fraction of a mile from my house, I think I’m going to stick to Pagano’s of Drexel Hill, A Cut Above of Newtown Square, and Carlino’s of Ardmore for my suburboagies, thanks.

Tucked away in Ardmore you would never know that it was there. Visited the location and ordered a turkey hoagie with the usual type of toppings and additions. Everything was done perfectly. Ingredients were fresh and the bread was perfect. Service was prompt and very fast. I would recommend this to anyone and visit again.

Primo’s is one of those East Coast based sandwich franchises that I have been meaning to try for years! But since I’ve always managed to find a Paesano’s, Jake’s Sandwich Board, Sarcone’s, George’s; and other sandwich treasure troves within walking distance from a location while I lived in Philly; it was just a location that always passed me by.
But since Subway and Wawa just don’t compete with what Primo’s has to offer, I finally found my chance to savor one of their sandwiches within a suburban strip mall. It took awhile to find this out, because compared to the other options Primo’s does have some occasional wonky hours (The 4:30pm close on a Sunday has been my undoing on a couple occasions!). But upon first entry my mind became blown by the number of sandwich varieties that they had to offer! whether its one of their classic Italian options, a hot sandwich with broccoli rabe or Buffalo chicken, or a spicy Diablo, they have a minimum of 3 hoagie available to tantalize the taste buds of us all!
When I first go to a hoagie shop I have to grab a classic Italian variation to see how well they hold up. And the Sicilian packed the punches of dry cured capacola, Genoa salami, and SHARP provolone (with extra hot peppers for my love of spiciness!). Add in the perfect hoagie bread and it was excellent in every bite that I quickly devoured. I’m normally wary of franchises by comparison, but considering you can find such hoagie goodness within multiple locations across 6 states; I can’t consider this one a bad thing.

I don’t want to like Primo Hoagies. I have actively tried to find a better sandwich around these parts and other than one contender, Primo Hoagies still reign supreme. We have ordered for a few games or for a quick lunch. Recently when my Dad was in town for an Eagles game, I picked up an order so we could tailgate. It took us 3 hours to get to the game, so the tailgate had to wait. Even after hours of sitting in the cooler, the sandwiches were still good.
It is not an everyday type of meal since they do cost a pretty penny, but if you want to make the game a little more special, give them a call. They never disappoint.

EW. Figured since there’s no recent review for Primos here, I should say something. I thought they would be really good with the hoagies for the price. But when I came in, I realized 6 inch (classic) hoagies are $ 11… Say what? That’s an insane price for 6 freakin’ inches. Plus they charge extra for provolone, sounds strange. They also charged a $ 1 for sampling the slice of deli meat… These extra charges were never mentioned until we pay for it. Not my kind of thing. Bread is not soft! I could probably kill a couple of pigeons with it. Also, I found pubic hair on my sandwich, not very appetizing.

This place was AMAZING. The sandwiches do take a long time to make, so call ahead to order. It is kind of tucked away in the mall to make sure you know where your going. I had the whacked chicken, which is chicken cutlet, pesto, provolone and bruschetta… it was unbelievable.

Fantastic hoagies: the stuff you dream of as an overseas student. The rolls especially are to die for, and the deli meats and preperation are top notch. I recommend the schwartzie, which is making my mouth water just now thinking of it. Get one for me.

This a great place for hoagies. All the sandwiches are delicious. At lunch things can get a little backed up, so be sure to call in your order.

As there is a new owner at this location I wanted to be sure they received their just due.
Having come from a recent poor experience at a different Primo location (just check my reviews), I went to this location today, 8÷12÷12. I called ahead to order and from the moment a very pleasant employee answered the phone to the second I walked out the door with food in hand, this was one of the best experiences I’ve had, not only with a Primo location but with takeout food in general. It was an additional pleasant surprise when I got home to eat my Audiablo hoagie (mmm, spicy turkey and roast beef!) and found it nicely packed with the proper amount of meat and fillings.
Having visited here when under the previous ownership it’s obvious there has been a big change for the better. It’s reflected not only in the employees but in the product itself.
I don’t think I need to delve deeply into the actual types of sandwiches offered or a full description of my own meal. If you’re familiar with Primo, you know their product. If you’re not, I can’t recommend a better location to try your first Primo hoagie!

Today was one of those days when I wasn’t in the mood to throw money away just to have lunch. I walked into Chipotle, and was just depressed looking at the choices… Looked across the street at Hummus, and would have been pissed if I crossed all of that traffic to see another so-​so menu… So I went with the safe choice and walked into Primo… The people there were welcoming, but not overly friendly… I wanted to have a seat to eat, but their dining room consisted of a few two seat tables next to the bathroom… I’ll pass on dining in…
Primo’s menu will drain you of any ability to comprehend more than a few things at one time if you don’t narrow what type of hoagie you want before looking at it… Today I had a Schwarzie… It consisted of corned beef, swiss cheese, cole slaw, and russian dressing… I gotta say that it was pretty damn good… And it was a nice change from the usual Italian, turkey, and roast beef subs that I would normally buy elsewhere… The subs here can’t be described as one of the best… but they also don’t disappoint when it comes to taste and freshness… $ 8 and some change for a hoagie usually equals a decent lunch special at a local restaurant or diner. But I didn’t have many choices on this block for lunch today…

Primo’s makes an above average hoagie consistently from location to location. I frequent this location the most. Their service is efficient, but could be a little friendlier — but don’t let that stop you from going — I think they brought some of the good old south phila. attitude out to Ardmore. Their meats are on the premium side and the bread is from Liscio’s and is a perfect hard crusted (but not too hard) seeded roll.

Good sandwich. Im not as in love with the rolls as everyone else is. I dont like toasted rolls for cold sandwiches. the seasame flavor dominates the bread. I had the sharp italian. also, id call ahead next time. pretty slow as all sandwiches are made to order.

Holy crap, I had a sucky experience at the Primos in Media, but geez oh man, is the one in Ardmore the bomb! I decided to give Primos another try after my earlier debacle, so I suggested ordering out at work. I had the NAPOLITANO: Hot Sopressata, Prosciutto & Sharp Provolone. The Prosciutto is thinly sliced and folded in, which I enjoyed, and the hot sop is something new for me, and me likey. Make sure to get the Primo roll, which is seeded and has the right amount of crusty and chewy… it was delightful!

Well, I’ve only been here once, because after my first visit I swore I would never go back.
We called ahead to order some hoagies on a Saturday afternoon, they said 15 min, I gave them 20 for good measure. I took my toddler with me, thinking I would just slip in and grab our order. No such luck! We waited another 25 minutes for our order to be finished, while people who walked in left with their food before we got ours. Very frustrating. When I asked why we were still waiting when we called ahead, I was rudely told by the «manager» (I guess) that they were very busy. No apology. I can tolerate quite a bit if I am treated decently, but this experience left me unhappy. The hoagies were decent. The staff, not so much…

For some reason, I had been avoiding Primo Hoagies… feeling like it was a «chain» as opposed to some of the mom & pop spots in the area. But, after reading the reviews here, I checked them out and was blown away by my sub. I’ve been back a few times & while all the subs are good, the chicken cutlet subs are memorable — they’re fried up fresh and are incredibly moist. Following others’ recommendations, you have to get the long hots — they add a buck or so to the price, but they’re worth every penny!

Two words, long hots. They have fresh roasted long hot peppers that compliment any sandwich.
I personally recommend the meatball hoagie. Another great choice of mine is the Chicken Suprimo, which has chicken cutlet, fresh mozzarella, and roasted peppers. If you like spice, get both of these with long hots and you will not be disappointed!

I had originally posted a five-​star rating of this Primo’s location. However, after a number of disappointing experiences, I’ve had to rethink my rating.
On August 22 I placed an order for a Cheese deluxe, substituting Mozzarella for the Swiss (who gets Swiss on a cheese sandwich anyway? I mean it’s a nice complement to ham and turkey but that’s about it for Swiss.). «Everything?» the guy on the phone asked. «Lettuce, tomato, onion? Yes,» I responded. I walked, in the rain, to pick up my sandwich (car in the shop), only to return home with a CHEESE SANDWICH with nothing whatsoever on it. Three kinds of cheese slapped between a hoagie roll. No mayo no oil no lettuce, tomato or onion. No nuffin. I called and spoke with an employee, but, not wanting to traipse back in the rain for another hoagie, I asked that the manager call me back.
The manager never did call me back.

Update: I think this one got sold! Hoagies are great now. Cheap delivery too.

Primo hoagies is the best hoagie option in the Ardmore area. They hand slice meats into fresh rolls, which makes the hoagie taste out of this world. I would definitely call ahead, since they can get busy. The location is really bare bones, so I would recommend take out.

We picked up a couple of hoagies from there the other day. They were excellent! The rolls are especially good.
One caveat though… they slice all the meats and cheese to order, which can be time consuming, so I would call ahead to place an order. Try getting a hoagie, a really good one at that — not at Subway anywhere else at lunchtime on during the week or even the weekend in less than 15 minutes. It is impossible.
Call ahead next time and save yourself the time.
