I really want to give this place 4 stars, but the only thing that is holding it back is the wait staff. I feel they are hit or miss. One night I had great wait staff and the next was horrible. You get great service at the end of the bar where the wait staff check in but forgotten about at the other end. The food and beer is amazing, but to get 4 or 5 stars, you really need good customer service.

I walked in the door and instantly liked it. Fish stew is terrific! Beer list is good too. Had a Riesling from New York that was aight but props to them for having it on their list. Server was a little rough around the edges but the hostess or manager helping out was friendly.

This is a great restaurant, especially for being this far away from Boston. We came here on a nice friday night and sat out on their patio. They have a lot of seating, and the place was crowded. We were able to use open table as well. I was a bit confused, they call themselves a gastropub, but it is very much an irish bar type of menu. Everything we ordered was great, our waitress was very nice, and service was great. They have full bar which is always a plus. We had a cheeseburger, chili/beet salad, salmon and the fish and chips. We also ordered poutine. The poutine was great, better than most other places around here. All of our dishes were filling and tasty. Worth going to in this area.

Quick stop for some drinks and apps on the patio. Everything was fine. The wine list is decent(I do like how all of them can be purchased by the glass), wings and salad were OK, the cheese plate looked big, but could use more actual cheese, than fruits. The poutine was a big serving but the fries were the bottom of the basket and much too drenched in gravy. It wasn’t bad, but could have been a lot better. Service was adequate. Overall, full of potential, but needs some refinement.

We’ve been to Stone’s twice and it hasn’t disappointed. The first time we went for lunch and were a bit discouraged because the lunch menu is a bit small, and they didn’t have a burger on the lunch menu(how does a self-proclaimed«pub» not have a burger?) However, the mac & cheese and turkey club were both great. We returned for dinner last week with friends and got the wings(very spicy) and calamari(interesting curry slaw on top) to start. My friend and I got the salmon and blue cheese mashed potatoes with broccolini. The portions were huge. The sides are served a la carte and are definitely enough to share. My husband got the steak sandwich and my friend’s fiancé got the corned beef Reuben; they both loved them. The service both times was quick and efficient, but our waitresses were a bit harsh and unfriendly. Also, they may have an extensive beer list, but no bud light — a huge negative in my husband’s eyes. We’re looking forward to sitting outside on the patio or checking out the newly renovated upstairs. Overall, Stone’s Public House is an above average restaurant and a great choice in Ashland.

I don’t comment often, but this deserves the 5 stars I’m giving. Service was excellent, thank you Sarah. Every menu item we had was perfectly prepared and presented with style. A pub and fine dining atmosphere rolled together made the night exceptional. Plus the Red Sox won.

We visited this restaurant for a date night several months ago(in autumn 2015), and we had a nice enough time with decent enough food. I was hoping for food that was a little more interesting and appealing, but certainly nothing was«wrong» with anything that we ordered — the fare was fine, but nothing special. I did enjoy my drink, which was an artisanal concoction with ginger beer and rum. There was nice bar area with a comfortable atmosphere, and a good beverage menu. Overall, it’s probably best to go for drink here, then somewhere else for a meal.

Though I’m still disappointed they dropped the curry chicken sandwich from the menu, it’s still a solid eating and drinking experience at Stone’s. And you can’t beat Sunday Night Blues! While they’ve maintained decent quality since parting ways with original chef and part owner, the food and presentation is not at the outstanding level it was when Matt was still at the helm. It’s been at least 10 years, however, so I guess I should get over it…

I was up visiting Boston with a few friends and we stopped here for brunch before heading back to New Jersey. The menu lists items but not specifics — my friend got the breakfast pizza but didn’t know the eggs were served on top sunny side up(which is not something everyone loves). Service was kind of slow but the food was good. I had the steak and cheese sandwich and it was absolutely delicious. The place has a lot of character and has a great atmosphere. Some things were more expensive than they seemed worth but overall, great place.

Pretty great food, the atmosphere is awesome. They have this amazing mustard in some of their sandwiches that is out of this world. They put so darn much on it I could hardly breathe. It was a pretty crazy experience, pretty awesome sandwich. We will definitely be back.

One of the best cocktails and fish n’ chips I’ve ever had! My boyfriend and I had a great first visit here, the old building provides a nice atmosphere too.

I love John Stone’s — great food and usually a wide selection of great beer including Weihenstephan Hefeweizen. Tonight I am disappointed that that has changed. Not a single wheat beer on tap or in a bottle. That’s the reason for 4 instead of 5. I am hoping for a wheat beer next time so I can up my rating. Update: I hear that WH is back(this time in bottles) — I’ll just have to check this out and then revisit my review. Update #2: Weihenstephan Hefeweizen is back!(bottles only) Update#3 Weihenstephaner Hefeweissbier is back ONTAP!

Salad had little flavor. Dressing appeared to be oil but little to no vinegar. Had the corned beef sandwich. Good presentation but thin on the beef. Had wifi. But not enough good food to come back.

I had the Lord Hobo beer with a grape under taste. It played well off my bowl of surprisingly fresh seafood chowder. The small plate of 4 Irish Egg Rolls made for a hard act to follow, but the fish n chips was not only perfect… it was more than I could finish!

Terrible surprise for Valentine’s Day. No full menu $ 55/person with no room for special requests. Normally love this place for its hearty feel good food, but this business choice really fees kinda sleazy to me. Would be one thing if we were told about this upon being seated. But not until after we’d ordered drinks were we informed about this«special» policy. We were the only confused people either. But if you gotta make money might as well exploit the love birds right?

Now THIS is my kind of restaurant! Way out in the boonies of southwestern Mass,(kind of like an «oasis miracle!»). Excellent food. Excellent servers. Excellent regular customers too! Overall it’s just a wonderful restaurant to drink and to eat and be merry.(It used to be an inn and it still feels like a house you might want to stay after hours and just bunk in for a while!) Ask the manager, Andrea, to tell you about the early days– and to share some of the wild tales and legends that are a part of the folklore of this wonderful watering-hole eating place! Wait for the train whistle. Highly recommended.

My brother collects books of historic buildings in New England that may potentially be home to spirits other than those found behind the bar. Personally I do not believe in ghosts(until the day I experience one), but these books are fun to read and also a great resource for adding restaurants and inns to my bucket list. I recently borrowed a book from my brother that featured a story on Stone’s Public House. There is a lot of history here at this quaint, cozy 1834 structure. The history of John Stone and his inn can be found on the pub’s website along with some great ghost stories. A recent road trip to the Ashland area brought me and my parents to this pub in the center of town. We decided lunch, and perhaps a little ghost hunting, was in order. Low ceilings, exposed beams, and other authentic details of its time period greeted us upon entering as well as a friendly hostess. There is a large dining area to the right with tables surrounding a central fireplace. Stairs ascend from the front entrance, but I am not sure if the second floor is open to the public. A long, dimly lit bar room expands to the left with a beautiful dark wood counter top. I love the large, dark, and somewhat creepy fireplace at the far end of the bar as it delivers an eerie feeling especially considering the building’s notorious reputation. I noted the bar room would be a great place to gather with friends for a couple drinks after work. Our server was friendly and attentive. We asked if she had seen the ghosts lately and she quickly dismissed any such nonsense with quick –witted humor. My mom, however, was hesitant to walk away on her own to find the rest room. I felt quite comfortable and cozy while admiring the details of the historic architecture surrounding us. The menu consists of pretty typical pub fare with an Irish theme. Irish Bread is served in a basket before the meal. Although I’m usually not a fan of bread with raisins, I gave it a try and was pleasantly surprised. My Dad and I chose the fish and chips. We both agreed it was decent and presented nicely. They gave us an extremely generous amount of fries, but I would have preferred less fries more fish. My mom raved about her cheeseburger. They offer a brunch menu as well in addition to desserts that sounded amazing, but we did have to pass on those due to being totally stuffed. The pub is located in a busy section of downtown Ashland. Parking is available in the large lot behind the building. Train tracks run very close by so do expect the building to shake slightly every twenty minutes or so as the commuter rail whizzes by. Unfortunately the ghosts must have been on vacation during our visit, but please keep me posted if anyone experiences otherwise.
