This place is great spot for everybody who love the fishing! I would say even that this bar is Key West style. But remember — you still in New York. Love the fish tacos with cod. They have sometimes live comedy shows which is better option than bars with loud house music

Friendly bartender and great drinks. Owner is friendly and has visions for this place. Come in come all and give it a try. Lots of Cumbia and salsa music! Should get a live band on the weekends sangria is yummy.

Terrible calamari but good HH deal– a shot & beer for $ 7 (well shots & Jameson, Bushmills, Jack Daniels being exceptions to the well rule + any beer on draft/​bottle.) Bartender was pleasant and place was pretty empty for a Saturday night.
I star for the good drink deal, another star for the good service & lit up menus.

Ive lived in the neighborhood for a while and watched the revolving door of a few vendors try to make this location their home. When Fishtales came around, unfortunately I and most people had already labeled it as a place we weren’t too interested in. Thankfully my friends and I were able to see past that recently and check out the restaurant.
We were the first ones to arrive that Friday night. The ambience is as you would expect from your local seafood spot. No it wasn’t dripping in chandeliers and flashy lights, but fish nets and anchors and plastic starfish, oh my. That shouldn’t be a deterrent. We’ve all been to the frying pan people.
The waiter was boisterous, over the top helpful, and very courteous. The have about 5 oyster selections to choose from and the blue points ($ 1) were great. No complaints. We ordered a few dozen, tried out the poppers, the shrimp, as well as the crab sandwich. Not one complaint on the food. I noticed someone mentioned the music could be better, but I think Clearchannel/​Z100 is more to blame there.
So check out Fishtales, it’s a great local spot. Great food, great people, and great prices.

Had dinner here with my boyfriend last night. I have to admit that we were really curious about a place with such polarized reviews. We had the blue point oysters, avocado rolls, fried clams, coconut shrimp, and beers. Everything was fresh, delicious, and came out to our table quickly. The bar is decorated really well too. The only thing I would suggest is to liven up the place a bit. It needs some more action or louder music or something. It was a really rainy night, but the bar was quiet. Maybe some like seagull ocean sounds in the background or something. And some advertising. It was impossible to find info online about this place. However, overall good experience. Definitely worth a shot if you like beer and seafood!

Service was great. after reading reviews would not have even gone there. My friend. Not a Unilocal person talked me into it. Fish and chips were cooked well. The waitress was great we did not wait at all. I don’t wo rite reviews but on occasion I feel sometimes Unilocal isn’t exactly accurate. My son and I took a road trip and found the local hole in the wall places with the worst reviews had the best food. Not the best setting but we love to eat

So my friends and I went to Fishtales to grab a drink. We were all pretty excited that a pirate themed bar had opened in town. We sat at the bar and 2 of us ordered tap Budweisers (because when at a pirate bar) when we took our first sips we knew right away that something was not right. We told the bartender and she was happy to give us a bottled beer, not ready to give up on the bar yet we turned our attention to the TVs above the bar. On one TV was a YouTube page playing a country album and on the other was a picture of a bleeding Jesus on the cross and then a picture of Obama. We continued to watch the photos of the devil, Jesus, Obama and angels fade on and off the screen. LUCKILY someone had left the mouse on the screen so we could read the title of the video «The Biggest Lie the Devil Ever Told Me» Published on Jul 10, 2015 description: «Pleiadian propaganda, alien anti-​christ, media manipulation, Illuminati lies and historical deceptions explored. In this video, I pose many questions. I am hoping to hear your thoughts, as there is plenty to consider here.»
…so yeah, we skipped the oysters and left. 1 star because the menus lit up.

Meh. To be honest, this place has kind of a weird vibe. I love a good themed restaurant, but these dudes did not nail the pirate theme, me mateys (it looks kind of tacky — like someone’s aunt went to Party City with a few gift cards and a gleam in her eye)! We got $ 1 oysters, and they were very inconsistent in size and taste. The sangria was really subpar. We also sat at this awkward section of the bar facing the kitchen window and all the ingredients in the fridge, which probably added to the weirdness. I love me some $ 1 oysters, but probably would not come here for them again! YARGHHHHHH…

Love this place! Excellent oysters and great drinks. Exactly what this neighborhood was lacking. Lovely décor and warm staff. Will be looking forward to more visits.

The food was horrible. We ordered 20 oysters they had a foul odor and the ones we tasted were like vomit she had her 11 year old daughter bringing stuff to the tables

Okay, first, for real, the worst service I’ve had in years! Not an exaggeration at all. Still have it at 3 stars cause the food was so good!
Buckle up, cause here we go:
The décor is awesome, super cool vibe too. My wife and I sat in the back with another couple and tried to order some beers.
The menu shows about 20 different choices, about 10 or so on draft, however they literally only had 4 beers in stock. But they don’t tell what they do have, they make you say «I’ll have this» and «okay, then I’ll have that» and each time she replied with «sorry, we don’t have that».
Finally I ordered a Budweiser (and a water) because I wanted a draft beer and it seems that was one of the only two choices I had. The other 3 in our party also order some beers. When they arrived ALL 4 WERE WRONG. All 4! We sent them back and gave up on the draft beer and ordered a couple bottles of corona. About 5 minutes later she came by the table and said «umm just wanted to confirm, you guys wanted coronas right?»!!! Yes. Yes we do.
Finally the beers come. We ordered a dozen oysters and a couple entrees (the muscles in garlic sauce was awesome) and fish and chips (fish was great, chips were not the classic «chips» you’d expect with «Fish and Chips», but regular fries. still they were okay). The portions were good.
Okay so first the oysters arrive. 10 on the plate! 2 were missing, and it turns out weren’t meant for us, it was another tables order! However, they were really good. Then the server came by and asked «did you guys order oysters?»!!! Ummm yes, we are literally eating them right now! «Oh and there are only 10 here! and can I get that water please? And the other 2 oysters!»
The muscles came with a couple pieces of toasted bread which we dipped into the delicious (but salty yum) garlic sauce. We asked half way through the meal if we could get more bread. She said yes and left. About 10 minutes later she came by and asked if we needed anything! Ummm how about the bread we asked for and that water I ordered when we sat down?! And those two oysters you shorted us!
Another server came by and cleared most of the table, but we asked to leave the garlic sauce for the bread we were not-​so-​patiently waiting for. Another 5 minutes goes by, still no bread! Or water! But the 2 oysters show up. One so small, I wanted to throw it back.
Finally the original server come over and says «oh the bread! Sorry, right, I forgot!» About 5 minutes later she comes by with 6 small pieces of bread for a table of 4. So, that didn’t last long. Oh, and I had to ask AGAIN for water, this time the other server comes by with 4 waters! I guess waters for everyone makes up for water for no one for the entire meal.
Then the bill comes. She only charged us for 4 beers, even though we had 6. Since that one swung in our favor, we didn’t complain, but it speaks to the level of incompetence of this server.
So, GO, the food is great, and inexpensive too (4 of us had 4 main courses and a dozen oysters, 6 beers (paid for 4) and the bill was only $ 80… Not bad at all. Service was so bad that it became comical, so we had a lot of fun! I still can’t believe Howie Mandel didn’t pop out with a camera crew.

The people here are super friendly. Good place to go when you are craving a cold beer and some raw clams/​oysters.

Came in here about a month ago, good décor, friendly staff. 1 $ oysters were awesome. Place has potential, let’s see how they evolve.

Awful. I love a good themed bar and this was a huge disappointment. There were a handful of people in the bar, we took a table in the back and even with the doorbell installed on the table we had a hard time getting service. There were barely any cocktails but the few they did have were pretty basic but unappealing. We ended up having two different people serving us which sounds like the opposite of my first sentence but it was as though they didn’t know the other even existed and was helping our table already even though i heard them talking about the drink my mom ordered (which came out wrong the first time). My sil and I both ordered the sangria, red and white… her’s came out yellow & opaque, no fruit, mine was a typical red wine color and had a single piece of fruit in it. We didnt even finish our drinks… We got the check from our original girl and she charge us for one drink even though we clearly had 3… bc again, the two had no idea what was going on.

I was randomly walking around Steinway looking for a good spot for a drink so this place caught my attention bc of the very under the sea décor & the happy hour sign that read $ 1 oysters & $ 5 sangria. The entire bar is decorated very well. You feel like you’re walking onto a boat in a scene of pirates of the Caribbean, however the drinks SUCK. My friend ordered a cranberry vodka that was basically straight cranberry juice The sangria comes in really cute mason jars but unfortunately weak enough to give to a child as an afternoon snack. The oysters were actually very good but the fact that they give you literally a pinch of cocktail sauce & relish in to go cups really turned me off. I wasn’t really interested in trying anything on the pretty light up menu bc I was disappointed in the menu options. How do you guys not have fish tacos or crab cakes or even a signature drink menu? The presentation is on point but the quality of the food/​drinks is poor. I really hope you guys step up the menu bc the service is not bad & the atmosphere is very different & exactly what Astoria needs. So I do see potential in this spot & would give it another shot but PLEASE STEP IT UP or fall victim to the shelf life that most bars/​restaurants in this area have.

Nice staff was not enough to make up for the unimpressive beer selection and really bad food. If you are going to promote yourself as an oyster bar and seafood place you really shouldn’t be serving frozen calamari with a side of ketchup. Probably won’t last.

Great music, service is horrible… not due to the staff, they we’re just overwhelmed… only 2 ppl working on Friday of their first month open??? Blue points good for $ 1 although we lost them to another table and had to correct the server. I’ll give it another try in a month or so to see if they’ve figured it out

If you’re doing a pirate bar you go all in or not at all. They need to go all in. Pirate music, costumes, etc…
Beer was good. Oyster special is good.

Stopped by today and was pleasantly surprised!
Finally a place in astoria for drinks and good seafood that wont hurt the bank.
Came in with a group of 4 and basically had to be kicked out we wanted to stay till the morning.
I had the jalapeño poppers and oysters both were delivered quickly and the poppers made my mouth water.
My freinds had the avacodo rolls one srimp one chicken both were awesome they have a lile bit of a spicy kick and the dipping sauces were great the spicy one made everything sooo much better and the ranch was real good and soft like velvet
I had a seabreeze spritz it was good my girl ordered it and we usually dont agree on drinks shes a sweet girl im a whiskey man but it was so good i got one for myself after i guzzeled hers.
Definitely will be back.
the only reason im not giving it 5 stars is because for now they have a very limited menu but id rather have a few good things then alot of crap
