Why are you never open when I want coffee? It is 4:30pm on a Tuesday. Why are you closed???

Small coffee and pastry shop that serves starbucks coffee located inside the Georgian Hotel. There are no seats inside, but they have tables outside. $ 2.50 for muffins and $ 1.50 for coffee. There was only 1 person working here when I came in so it took awhile for me to get served. They have several muffins(bran, cranberry orange), coffee cakes, etc

great place to grab a quick bite for breakfast on your way out of the Georgian Terrace. I stayed in the hotel for three weeks and ate here every morning!

Unfortunately there are not a lot of options at the Georgian Terrace when it comes to breakfast — not even in the area, much less at the hotel. If you happen to be on a corporate rate, you might score an included breakfast voucher. It is my understanding that these used to be good for the Livingston — the restaurant inside the hotel, rather than Café Mims, which cannot be reached from the interior of the hotel. Now they are only good for the café. What is really odd is that Café Mims is also run by the Livingston. Typically it is run by a waiter or someone from the Livingston. The receipt even says Livingston on it. So why can you not use the voucher at the Livingston? I have no idea. It is a bit annoying. It is even more annoying that you have to go outside to get to Café Mims, and it gets even worse if the weather is bad. Try walking along the rain-soaked tile to get to the door and you will see what I mean. But that is not all, because you might find that the posted hours(generally breakfast-like) are not really when they are open. One morning, they closed at 9-ish, when they were supposed to be open until 10. One morning they were open, but the only choice was coffee. No sandwiches or delectable treats or anything. Another morning they were not open at all, apparently due to remodeling. But they neglected to tell anyone this, and getting money back on the breakfast voucher was not possible. Even getting the voucher to apply to Livingston was nigh impossible. So if you want coffee? Probably not bad. If you are staying at the hotel? Not a great choice. If you can go elsewhere, I would.

I remember reading about Café Mims when it first opened, but then kind of forgot about it, mostly because it’s nowhere near me. But when I started working in the area, I figured I’d give it a shot for lunch. Walking in, Mims reminded me of the kind of place you’d find in NYC. It’s long and narrow and has an Art Deco feel. Be warned: there’s only enough room to stand in line and the only seating is the patio outside, which was a no-go for me since it was raining. So with winter coming, you should probably plan to grab your food to go. Anyway, while perusing the glass cases of pre-made sandwiches, pastries and more, I chatted with the guy behind the counter to get his recommendations. He pointed me towards the Copa, one of the six or so sandwiches offered up on Mims’ chalkboard menu. It had a mix of Italian cold cuts, green olives, piquillo peppers and a basil pesto. When I grabbed a soda and got ready to pay, the cashier informed me that getting a box lunch was a better deal. And for once, it was. Because $ 9 got me a sandwich – mine was small, so I got the whole thing instead of the typical half – plus a side salad, cookie and drink. Back at the office, I unboxed my lunch and had a pretty good meal. The sandwich had a nice bread-to-meat ratio. The peppers added a kick, too. The pasta salad was pretty standard, but I did appreciate the huge chunks of mozzarella. And the oatmeal raisin cookie was sugary goodness. It’s worth noting Café Mims also offers coffee and breakfast-y baked goods as well. I’m not sure I’ll be heading down for a morning meal any time soon, but I’ve already put Mims in next week’s lunch rotation.

Café Mims is attached to the Livingston Restaurant at the Georgia Terrace Hotel, with no indoor tables; just a few open outdoor seats on the edge of the terrace, looking across the street at the Fox. The m.o. here is gourmet sandwiches($ 8), salads($ 4), coffee, pastries, baked goods, and apparently homemade ice cream — they were offering chocolate, vanilla, peanut butter and avocado when I visited. The selection is small, but enjoyable. I’m not sure my roasted lamb with arugula, vidalia onion & mint pesto or The Boy’s coppa and sopprasotta sandwich quite matched my hopes for what they *could* have been. I mean, those sound like awesome sandwiches, and these were just… good. And the service, even for counter service, was disinterested at best. In a better, brighter future where Unilocal allowed half-stars, I’d give it a 3.5. Good if you’re in the neighborhood, but just not quite worth the 10-block trek I made to get down there.
