Closed. I tried it once, and it was OK, but I wasn’t going to rush back.

This place is awesome. The dreaded owner is peace and likes to talk about conspiracies and David Icke docs. There isn’t one thing on their menu I don’t like. Everything is pretty fresh and seasonal, so that means the can be out of something frequently. I love the creativity in the menu. We vegetarians would be taking a huge loss if they were to leave us.

I found this wonderful eatery on my android phone app. On my visit I had soyfish, mac n no cheese, mixed vegetables, soup of the day and a muffin. The food was so good that I had to order a second plate to go. In all I purchased two extraordinary plates of food for under $ 20

I really enjoyed my meal(curry tofu, mock salmon cakes, mixed cabbage, rice and peas). If you dine in you get a choice of the small plate(three items) or the large(four items, plus soup). They close at 6 p.m. and I don’t make it downtown for lunch very often, so I went for the large in order to sample as much as I could. Everything was tasty with distinct flavors. The owner is friendly, soft spoken and very attentive. I’d really like to try the vegan mac n cheese, but the menu changes daily so I’ll just need to catch it when I can.

yes, this restaurant sits off the beaten path downtown atlanta in-between a few run-down barber shops. BUT the food is excellent. cafeteria-style you choose three entrees for your small or large plate. you do not pay until after you are done eating and are satisfied with your meal. the dread-locked man behind the counter looks harsh but is subdued and friendly. i’m not sure that i would call this food HEALTHY, but it is certainly vegan and definitely delicious. i will definitely visit this place again the next time i am in atlanta.

Mmmm, I love this place and will definitely be going back SOON! The food is great and there are so many more things I want to try. Today I had the«food» — yams, potatoes, dumplings, and collard greens(which were surprisingly flavorful — AND vegetarian, of course), and the tempeh stir fry. I also tried the Carrot Apple Ginger juice. It was all fantastic, and my friends gave some of the other dishes the thumbs up, too… like the curry chickpeas, the cabbage, the pumpkin mashed potatoes, and the orange lemon juice. The folks that run this place are really nice — they make you feel at home, and they make awesome food. I’m a picky eater, and I liked it all… so that’s saying a lot. Parking is a pain, though. I’m taking MARTA next time!

My favorite lunch spot in Atlanta, hands down. I eat here probably three times a week, and have gotten to be very friendly with the family that owns and operates this business. The food is wonderful — both healthful and extremely flavorful. I’m addicted to the soyfish(bad name, delicious dish) and the homemade veggie burgers are among the best I’ve EVER tasted(worth the wait). While this isn’t Burger King and you can’t have it your way, I completely disagree with the previous reviewer’s characterization of the owner as «rude.» He does have a quirky sense of humor and she may not have realized he was joking with her. Slow down, take a deep breath, and savor the moment and I promise you’ll leave with a satisfied belly and a smile on your face. There’s a rumor they are contemplating a return to NY and the Village… if you enjoy hearty veg food and Caribbean flavor, support Calabash so they don’t leave Atlanta(and me) hungry!

I was really excited to find Calabash downtown. I have only had the hot bar, and while the food isn’t *amazing*, it is fairly good. Tthere is always something I want to eat, and the entire restaurant is safely vegan. The hot bar has a changing mix of veggies(collards, cabbage, peas, others), curry dishes(with chick peas or potatoes or soy stuff), lentils, Ital stew(which is really good), BBQ tofu is good, mac and«cheese»(which I haven’t had but a eager to compare to Soul Veg and Sevananda). The hotbar is a good price. Small plates with three items = $ 6, which is enough to overstuff myself or have a little left over. I normally can’t get out of there for less than $ 10, though, because I can’t control myself not to by the fresh juices…$ 3.25 or so. I like the tamarind apple ginger and lemon ginger. Friendly staff. The owner always makes a point to say hello and check on you and the tall woman gives nice compliments.

Calabash is my favorite lunch place downtown. The food is a refreshing change of pace from the fast food options on Broad street. Although the place is strictly vegetarian, I haven’t had a single one of my meat eating friends not love the place. I love the daily specials and the workers are very friendly.

My friends raved about this place. Southern meating-eating dudes LOVED this place. I’m always down to try new foods, though«alternative foods» kinda freak me out. The owner was very friendly. I told him I was waiting for a recently-turned-vegetarian friend and her vegan brother, he asked me, And what happened to you? I must have the stank of processed foods seeping from my pores. His wife gasped when I told them I really like pork. Cheap! 3 items for $ 6! I got the soyfish, ackee(well described by Keith H.), and«food»(Yam, Dumplings, Green Bananas, and Potato). It was so good. The texture of the soyfish was a bit like swordfish, so it didn’t freak me out. Everything was really good! He even gave us some vegan pumpkin bread for free. Can’t wait to come back and try some veggie goodness from the tropics. It’s a sketchy walk but it’s worth it. Just missed the one-year reggae celebration in Dec… dammit.

The food is awesome and they are very friendly! And the soups are spectacular!!! The prices are really reasonable — especially for all the food you get. My only complaint is their hours– they close too early!

Excellent Vegan food. Lots of choices with an island flavor and varying levels of spicyness. $ 6 buys you a plate with three ‘table items’(from the steam table) $ 8 buys you four items. Excellent home made ginger beer and lemonade. Small, friendly, totally informal.

In the wasteland of mediocre downtown eateries, this place is a godsend. Friendly service, solid vegetarian food, and low prices($ 6 for three items or $ 8 for four) will ensure that I return. Like the previous reviewer, Calabash is a hike from my office(about 1 mile), but I agree that it is worth the walk. I had BBQ tofu, mac n «cheese,» and mixed vegetables, all of which were very good. Other selections that day were pepper steak and lasagna. I will definitely be back again soon. One word of warning however is that for some insane reason, they charge $ 2 to dine in the restaurant. Take-out is surcharge free. I really hope they change this policy.
