Although the facility is great and having an indoor pool is a huge plus, the student staff is often ill-equipped to handle basic customer service needs.

I think that the GSU gym is a great facility. Only issue is the whole rule on having a t-shirt/no shirts with no sleeves ir you can’t workout in the gym. Where they do that at?

I’ve been a handful of times, and I’ve always enjoyed the Rec center at State. It’s definitely a whole lot better than where my boyfriend graduated from lol. They have full basketball courts, indoor track, swimming pool, Jacuzzi, sauna, racket ball courts, dance studios, rock climbing, game center, etc. They pretty much have it all I think. 4 floors. I’m sure you’ll find something to your liking. I love coming here to swim, workout, or run. The locker rooms and showers are actually very well kept and clean. However, trying to get a decent sized locker is going to be a struggle if you’re not one of the first people in line the day they go on sale. One of the many downers of State. However, still an AWESOME rec center. You can also reserve the dance studios to practice in, and if no one is in there and it’s not listed on the time schedule, it’s first come first serve. $ 5-$ 6 for guests. Students must have ID’s to get in and out.

Excellent college gym! I like to get right in at 6am for my am workouts. The place is usually slow at that time and I can do whatever machine I want without waiting. The classes offered is impressive and they also offer personal training and outdoor adventure excursions as well. The locker rooms/showers are kept clean and tidy. This gym serves its function!

Great gym! Huge and love the selection of exercise equipment! Clean and Eco-friendly which after you wipe down your equipment, you can recycle the paper towels. There is also a swimming pool and offer classes(zumba, ab, etc). The locker rooms are roomy and kept clean. A nice addition to Georgia State University.

The State gym isn’t bad; just depends on what you are looking for. The school really tried to cater to a large demographic by incorporating a pool, track, weight room, rock wall, fitness rooms, etc… Unfortunately the gym itself isn’t very big so all of the things I just listed are kind of small. A couple of examples: 1) 1⁄8 track versus the normal ¼ mile. 2) 25 meter versus the normal 50 meter pool. 3) Smaller gym with about ½ the machines and weight that a comparable gym might have. I personally don’t mind going there but I try to avoid it during the first 2 weeks of any semester(all the guys who haven’t figured out that drinking is a much better time) and the week before spring break(chatty sorority girls work on their beach bodies for exactly 5 days). The small spaces can make these people extremely unbearable.

I don’t mind following rules; in fact, I appreciate having order and routine in my life. But every so often I come across a rule that is idiotic and detrimental to my freedom. At Georgia State University’s Student Recreation Center, patrons aren’t allowed to wear sleeveless tops. The staff is so adamant about this rule that on my first day there a couple years ago, an employee interrupted my elliptical efforts to tell me that I should be wearing sleeves. Why? «Because when people wear sleeveless shirts, their sweat wears down the machinery more quickly.» What? As a former group fitness instructor and lifelong gym rat, I’ve never encountered a rule like that before. Other than that, the SRC is outstanding, offering four levels of workout fun. 1: a manly meathead free weight area with a rock climbing wall and handball courts — An aquatic area is somewhere on the bottom level, too. 2: a weight machine room with cardio equipment 3: group fitness classrooms 4: a track I appreciate that floor-to-ceiling windows line one side of the track, letting in natural sunlight and a beautiful city view while I run in monotonous circles. Just outside the track area spans a hallway with mats and abdominal balls. The classes are hit-or-miss. Highlights have included the spinning classes, particularly one instructed by a bulging international cyclist and a yoga class that helped me ease a lot of tension after I got in a wreck. Low points included weight lifting taught by a guy with horrible form and no sense of rhythm, and a kickboxing class led by someone who touts his Muay Thai competitions and online videos instead of actually showing us some moves. For me, the fee is only $ 21 a month, and my boss lets me go during lunch, as she understands how much a midday workout improves my focus, productivity and morale. Thank you, boss and thank you, SRC.

Coming to GSU after doing my undergrad at UGA has been quite a shock for the most part. In general at GSU, the student facilities and benefits are so poorly managed that I try to avoid them. Some, I haven’t even tried at all. If the student bookstore is so badly run, I’m definitely not going to try the student health center! Thankfully, the Student Recreation Center has been a bright spot in my payment of hundreds of dollar in required student fees. The student workers are generally distracted and unhelpful, but the classes they offer here rock! I’ve done a ballroom dance class(which was only $ 20 for a whole semester of weekly instruction), and the instructor was a globally ranked competitive ballroom dancer. Today, I tried out an aquatic zumba class, and I’m already popping motrin to fend off the soreness I’m starting to feel. Again, the instructor was great, and aquatic zumba is one of the many free, drop-in classes they offer throughout the week, no registration required. The locker room is very clean and well appointed, complete with soap/shampoo dispensers in the showers and those nifty bathing suit dryers that ring all the water out of your swimsuit in seconds. I haven’t tried out the machines or weights yet, but there have been many empty stations on my visits so far, so it doesn’t seem like there’s much of a wait to get to the machines you want to use. They also have a big rock climbing wall, a giant pool complete with hot tubs(yes, plural), and a big outside garden/deck area that they load up with lounge chairs in the summer for sunbathing. Bring a lock for their day-use lockers, and a towel. Otherwise, they’ve got everything else you could possibly need for a very challenging and enjoyable workout.
