We tried this new restaurant today for the first time. Stepping into the shoes left by David’s Thai Cuisine, the longtime predecessor at this storefront restaurant site, was not likely to be an easy task, but the new restaurant crew, with an entirely revamped and expanded menu, is succeeding marvelously. Service was infectiously friendly and helpful, and the food was right up there in quality with the best Thai food we’ve had(and we eat A LOT of it). The«beef jerky» appetizer, accompanied by a very piquant and spicy dipping sauce, was very good, as were the garlic-and-pepper beef(«topped with crunchy fried garlic and cilantro»), the Pad Kra Pow Kai(with pork), and the drunken noodles(with beef). We like our Thai food to be at the very maximum edge of hot-and-spicy, and our«Number 10» request did the trick. What impressed us the most, perhaps, was the lively and robust flavor of all the sauces — not always a sure thing in Thai restaurants. Very much worth trying! Next time, we’ll explore some of the curries, which our host/waiter recommended highly.

We went in because we love Thai food. When we got there there were two tables taken. We waited there a few minutes when the man at the front points at a table and says we can sit there. After we seated, we wait… wait…wait. Hello? As if we were forgotten about. FYI I am not sure why anyone can forget us, the place is tiny. So my bf gets up to get us our«own» menus. I admit, I wanted to leave, but my Boyfriend wanted to try the food. After another long wait and me witnessing 2 other couples(leave) because no one helped them, we finally received a waitress. We made orders and yep, they messed it up. We asked for spice level 4, what we got was(zero) peppers on the papaya salad(fyi: I am half asian and grew up with my best-friend from Thailand making papaya salad. The flavors were OK) nothing great. Now we paid 2 dollars extra to have shrimp on the salad, there were literally TWO shrimp! Are you serious? We paid a dollar for each piece! Lol! Now the yellow curry was an okay flavored dish, but the tofu was old– prepacked cheap stuff. I love tofu but couldn’t eat it. The other veggies were good, so I ate around the tofu. I was really disappointed! Thai food is my favorite food, this was the worst Thai food I ever had. I am glad I live in Elk Grove and not Auburn. This place would not survive in Sacramento– way too many good Thai restaurants in Sacramento.

We stopped by on our way to Tahoe and were hoping for a decent alternative to fast food. We ordered panang curry with swai fish and hot tea. Waitress didn’t ask us about spice level and I worried a little since we like some flavor but don’t generally go in for pet pet pet. The curry arrived with a side of rice that wasn’t quite perfect, but the curry was… exquisite. The gravy was rich and the perfect consistency, with lots of flavor and just the right amount of heat. The swai was cooked almost perfectly and the portions were reasonable. We will be back!

A new place to try in Auburn. The fresh rolls were ordered, these were well prepared, good presentation, and tasty. I had the yellow chicken curry at a medium heat — the sauce was slightly thicker than previous experiences, but was very flavorful and a good texture of spices and vegetables. Alas I can’t recall what my friend ordered, but she enjoyed the food too. We ordered the food as take out — it took them a bit longer than they estimated(I had to wait an additional 15 minutes) — but I would attribute to them being a new restaurant. Will be back to try out some more dishes.

Star Thai is the new restaurant in the old location of David’s Thai Cuisine(of which I have been a faithful customer for the past 23 years). After dining at Star Thai twice now, I must say that the flavors are excellent. It is great to find an authentic Thai restaurant like this, as I feel far too many places these days are way too Americanized(wet soggy stir fry’s, loose watery curry, flavors lacking, etc). Chef On, and partner Setavat(I just know that I am butchering the spelling of his name), are a breath of fresh air. A wide range of dishes, all very flavorful and tasty, and Setavat is great to talk to. Chef On always has a wide smile as she prepares each dish, it’s awesome to see people clearly enjoy their work :) I had to give it 4 stars though, so far anyway, purely because I have not been able to get it prepared hot and spicy enough for my liking(no biggie, as they have extra spices for the table). As a person who made the Wall of Flame at David’s, I really look forward to an extremely high spice level while maintaining the excellent flavors. However, I fully expect Chef On to turn it up as she gets to know me more. Thanks Star Thai, i’ll be seeing you soon!

This place must be new as there were no reviews. We had the fresh spring rolls, vegetable deluxe and ground chicken salad. Loved it! Everything tasted fresh and flavorful. I hate it when places overbook vegetables into a mushy mix. Star Thai Cuisine made it perfectly. Service was very friendly and fast. Will make this a regular stop going and and back to Tahoe. We haven’t tried any other meat dishes so will update next time.
