Slightly east of Alameda and Havana lies a stripmall containing Megenagna Grocery, named for an area in the Ethiopian capital city of Addis Ababa. Observant visitors will notice that this exact spot formerly housed another nice Ethiopian grocery, Ibex International Market, and thus it will probably come as no surprise to learn that many of Megenagna’s products derive from this historically-rich country in the Horn of Africa. Do you need Teff Flour to make Injera? Megenagna has bags of it — and how! Are you in search of Koseret(verbena), Senafitch(mustard seed) or Netch Azmud(ajowan/bishop’s weed) to pump up your Ethiopian culinary masterpieces? You’ll more than likely find everything you need here. Sometimes, they have Sambusas(savory pastries) and the wonderful proprietress also serves some food on Saturdays! Oh, and they have the usual convenience-store staples too. So head on out to Megenagna, and see what you’ve been missing. Afterward, you can even go a couple doors down and visit the equally fantastic Ghanaian-owned grocery called Accra Kumasi!
