So it looks like they have decided to close this place and the other Furrs in Austin down. Such a shame because I really liked this place. Although the last two times I went there the food had gone down badly but the service was good. Either way the one star is for them closing all Furrs in Austin down.

A few weeks ago, the better half and i were hungry. We decided to go to Golden Corral in San Antonio, and while looking at other buffet choices on Unilocal,I saw a listing for Furrs. He still had his heart set on the Corral, so we ended up there. Where is this leading you ask? Well, give me a minute, and I will get there. We did a road trip from San Antonio to Killeen and he decided he was going to surprise me by taking me to Furrs in Austin on the way home. I had no idea there was a Furrs in Austin. So after patiently riding in the car for a good 25 miles listening to a robot tell us where our turns were, we pull into the parking only to find out they were closed. UUUUUGGGGHHHH… But they did tape a nice letter on the door which I posted on Unilocal so if any one else sees this, they know not to waste the drive. I also told the Unilocal team, but i don’t know how long it will take them to read their edit notes and permantely mark this place as closed. I am sorry I did not get to experience Furrs. I also hope that any one who has a hankering to go to Furrs will read this first, and not bother driving over there. I don’t want them to be disapointed.

Walked in and wasn’t quite sure how this place worked. Needed a break from the mexican fare and was too lazy to drive all around looking for a good place, so we wound up here. Didn’t realize it was a buffett. The host explained that we needed to grab a tray and work our way back up to the registers. The food reminded me of a hospital cafeteria. Pretty much the same drill. Grab a tray and push through the line. Many of the trays were a tad dirty. Food choices were meh. –Fried Chicken(Too spoiled by broasted chicken now) –Roast Beef –Ribs –Enchiladas –Baked chicken not very good looking vegetables. Okra, broccoli, corn, beans. Everything looked kind of tired and old. Granted it was close to closing time. Gals serving were nice as was the guy checking us out. The best thing I had was the bun that reminded me of grade school. Those soft white buns lightly buttered in top. They were the best thing here and the best thing back in grade school. Not sure I would rush back with all the choices in Austin, but it was fair.

This is a good american buffett. The fried catfish is awesome. Large selection of proteins — beef, seafood, chicken. The salad isn’t bad, and they had a good selection of vegetables. I really liked the desert — key lime pie and Idouble chocolate cake — yum. Service is good for a buffet place and the prices are real reasonable.

Blackened fried tilapia was very crispy, nice texture and flavor. The other tilapia was spicy, had a nice kick to it, that I wasn’t expecting. Accompany the fish with some greens and rice. Also tried the pot roast, runny, not very flavorful. They do have a variety of very nice salads. The chicken is also good. Plenty if desserts. the meal, for a decent price, decent amount of quality.

Super value during the week here… I’ve eaten here for years. Sometimes food isn’t as hot as it could be but their salad selection is awesome. I suspect they employ illegal aliens(which makes me question cleanliness behind the scenes) but it’s usually very good(even if the corn is kind of bland). The desserts make up for it(although they don’t seem to have apple dumplings anymore). Roast beef is always good. Health slaw rules. Friendly people(except for the ones that don’t speak English). Beats the HELL out of any fast food place(except perhaps Jason’s). You will find some things you like. Waitresses are a relatively recent addition; I’d rather get up and go pick out seconds for myself, thank you.

All in all, the food is good and the servers and wait staff are friendly. Place is clean, but could desperately use a makeover.

You get what you pay for here. If you want to spend less than $ 10 and gorge on all-you-can eat high-fat and high-sodium but low-taste food, then this is the place for you. Otherwise, don’t bother. You’re better off grabbing something from a fast food joint.

Corey’s got it right: Furr’s is a slight bit under Luby’s for quality. However, a good $ 7.99 at Furr’s would cost you over $ 20 at Luby’s. Plus, there’s a clown.

Good for what it is… a cheep buffet(Furr’s is a buffet only restaurant). Probably just a notch below Lubby’s in food quality, but cheaper, otherwise very similar. Best thing about Furr’s is the price, I believe a plate cost $ 7.99, but they get you on a drink at $ 2. Menu changes daily
