Gus’s World Famous Fried Chicken definitely lives up to its names. It was super busy in there during the lunch period. I was alone, so I was seated at the counter immediately. I ordered the fried green tomatoes. The order comes with about 5 or 6 tomatoes and were so delicious! The chicken lives up to its reputation. Very tasty. I also had the Mac and cheese and collard greens. Both of the sides were just ok. Nothing to brag about. If you want some good fried chicken, go to Gus’.

You have to try anything«world famous» am I right? I’ve been to Gus’s numerous times as it is my boyfriend’s favorite place to eat when he comes to Austin. The chicken here is really good IF you like spicy. Fortunately for me, I love spicy foods so this fried chicken hits the spot. It isn’t extremely spicy, but I am a little biased since I love spicy foods. What’s great about the fried chicken is it is extremely tender and moist on the inside while the skin is crunchy and flavorful on the outside. Not too greasy either. The sides are ok, nothing too special about them. This place is downtown so finding parking can be a hassle! There’s street parking around and there’s also a garage nearby that charges $ 3 on weekdays but I think on weekends they hike it up to $ 10.

Stopped in while recently on a whim and was really impressed. As a huge fried chicken fan, I was skeptical of a place that says they have world famous chicken, but they lived up to there name. The prices were very reasonable and the chicken wa

I had heard people raving about Gus’s fried chicken. I have been waiting for a chicken place to open for many years. We were in town from Houston on a day trip. We arrived right at the lunch rush, the wait was not that long, but the table seating name taking process needs to be changed. Your supposed to give your name to a girl behind the counter to be put on a waiting list for tables. She is so busy with take out orders and such that you can’t get anywhere near her if she’s even there. Their claim is that they don’t cook your chicken until you order it. I ordered a 3 piece dark plate which consists of 1 leg and 2 thighs, and 2 sides. My wife and daughter both ordered chicken strips. My chicken was slightly overdone, which I could live with, but what I didn’t like was that it was not hot. It was a safe temperature, but not fresh from the fryer. It didn’t even steam when I took a bite. It was also slightly dried out. The breading although good is not significant enough to protect the chicken from the outer layer getting dried out. This place is ok, but on this day, it didn’t live up to the hype. I would like to try again during an off peak time to see if the quality improves.

#1 chicken tenders in Austin. Get here before 1130 for lunch or you’ll be spending your lunch break in line. Solid lunch plate for $ 7.50. Had my military uniform on today, owner paid our entire table’s bill. Stand up guy. You can always see him outside. Chicken has just enough spice on it to make it interesting. Will continue to come back over and over again. Gus’ #1 Lucy’s #2

Their fried chicken is SPICY. That’s just a note for those who didn’t know that coming here. I give this place 3.5 stars. Service is pretty good(our waiter memorized all of our orders, food came out at a decent time), and the food is a little above average for fried chicken. I had the 2 piece dark(go dark if you want something more fatty and juicy: P) with cole slaw and mac&cheese. Plates usually come with slaw and beans, but you can substitute for 50 cents more. Here’s my advice: keep the slaw, and if you do the beans for something, do not get the mac&cheese. Mine had overly cooked pasta, so I felt like I was eating a mushy pile of cheese. The cole slaw was refreshing and tasted good! Fries are also good. Wish they had a private parking lot. You can park in the garage across the street for $ 3 for an hour.

I am not a fried chicken fanatic the way some people are(especially south of the Mason-Dixie line) so, if you are, take this review with a grain of salt or whatever it is you think makes fried chicken the best thing ever. I will start by putting to question this«World Famous» claim because I had never heard of this place until it was suggested by some other Unilocalers. I got the chicken tenders w/honey and beans/mac n cheese. I was lucky enough to be sitting w/some people that got almost everything else on their sides menu, so I feel like I had a decent sampling of what they had to offer. The tenders were good and even though one of the people sitting with us stated the chicken was too spicy, as someone who cannot tolerate spice, I will say it had some kick, but not to the point of affecting the enjoyability of the chicken. The honey was a nice dipping sauce, but the honey mustard was better. The beans and mac n cheese on their own were just OK, but when you Wonder Twined them, amazing things happened in my mouth! The fried pickles and okra were also just along the«OK» category, but of the fried app offerings, my fav was the green tomatoes! MaryStuartMatterson, they were good! Especially w/the ranch, which I know nothing about(as in if it’s housemade or wholesale) other than it was delicious w/a bit of a kick as well. The sweet potato pie was kind of a disaster(I mean it had zero flavor and was as bland as Ben Carson’s personality). I am not a fan of pecan pie(I know I know, blasphemy in TX, but get over it, I’m a transplant like 99% of the people in Austin) so I cannot attest to it, but others at my table said it was OK. Our waiter was very nice and made some informed suggestions, which I always appreciate when it’s my first time at a place. I don’t know that I would go out of my way to come back here, but would stop in if I was in the vicinity and wanted a decent bite at a fairly decent price.

Say whaaaat? They have Gus’s in Austin? What?! How did I not know this? My first encounter with Gus’s fried chicken was in their hometown of Memphis, TN and my taste buds were all dancing in joy all the way through the end of my tour at Graceland. However, that was the only time I had Gus’s and I thought that was going to be the last time, at least for a long while. Until my friend told me about this awesome little fried chicken shack in downtown Austin called Gus’s! Whaaaaat?! Dudes and dudettes, of course I had to make my way back to Gus’s. I miss the flavorful chicken! I miss the spiciness, the finger licking goodness of fried chicken that is Gus’s! I came here for dinner and it wasn’t packed. Unlike the wait that was snaking out the door in downtown Tennessee, there was no line here. I came in and got seated immediately. In fact, there were plenty of open seats in the restaurant. Me and my friend waited a while before a waitress actually came up to us asking if we’d been help. And not long after she left, another waitress came by and asked us the same thin. I was kind of kicking myself a little bit because the 2nd waitress was smoking hot! Oh well. I’m a breast man so I had to grab me two breasts for me to nibble with a side of mac n’ cheese. The breasts were delicious, just like how it was back in Memphis. The mac n’ cheese was just okay, I thought. I also ordered some fried pickles spears and they weren’t too shabby. Not the best I had, but weren’t bad at all. Our waitress ended up being super awesome and super attentive so I wasn’t really kicking myself in the butt anymore. I mean, I was still creeping on the hot waitress, obviously, but hey what man wouldn’t? Anyway, come here for the chicken because they are legit. The sides are just okay. Will be back the next time I’m in ATX.

This place was the bomb! Normally I’m pretty picky when it comes down to chicken but I must say… That they seasoned this to perfection! Very hot and spicy with the RIGHT type of seasoning. A great meal for a great price! It was about 12 $ for my 2 dark breasts and 1 leg with the beans and Cole slaw. Man. Those beans were SWEET and tasty! That Coke slaw was so fresh and good. I don’t like everyone’s Cole slaw but dang I have no complaints! The staff was so welcoming and friendly! I definitely will return to this place! Great spot when your with good company.

With a name like Gus’s World Famous Fried Chicken, how could we resist? I love fried chicken, and was excited to try this place! We came here for dinner on a Saturday night around 8pm and waited for about 20 – 30 minutes before we were seated. The chicken itself has crispy skin, juicy meat and a nice kick of heat and spice! Perfect amount of heat, completely different than Nashville hot chicken. The sides were pretty good — coleslaw wasn’t too overloaded with sauce and mac and cheese and nice and creamy. We also really enjoyed the sweet tea! Service was a bit scattered — our server was a bit overloaded in the beginning but once she got all her orders in, there was nothing to complain about. Glad we got to try it!
