I don’t know about the Haircut Store, I know Phyliss who ran her barbershop on Duval next to Quacks and La Dolce Vita. I guess she was kicked out due to greedy landlord rent increases. At least we found her again and now she’s working inside Haircut Store. Phyliss is quick and adept at all boys’ haircuts. She styles like Edward Scissorhands. A real sculptress. My son is quite particular about the styling of his coup. Having been to Bird’s, Aveda Spa, the Aveda school and several barbers in town we found Phyliss and will stick with her.

NOTTAKINGNEWCLIENTS — DONTBOTHERCALLING. Spoke with«Lizzie» today who was one of the rudest people imaginable. They don’t take new clients. Couldn’t pay me to go there with that woman’s obnoxious phone attitude! Note to Lizzie: you cut hair, you don’t cure diseases.

Abbey Gapko is the bomb for all your men’s hair needs. Do’s, fades, shaves, shapings, beards. They are her(*#@&!(* jam. Zeus looked down from Olympus on the day Abs was born, driving his blessed thunderbolt into her hands, and spaketh: «She shall have the gift of making mens’ haircuts all kinds of perfect, infusing style and grace into each coiff, and males across the land shall know her mighty scissors-and-trimming skills.» People who know me might go «whu, your hair looks pretty much like Spock these days, or maybe Trent Reznor. There’s nothing to it. Get a freakin’ trimmer and shave it yourself, it would look the same.» Yeah, you’d be wrong. When you have weirdo hair growth patterns(or loss), the obvious is not so obvious. And she gets it right every dang time. I could mention the H Store’s location, free wifi, occasional beverages, or Abs’ sweet wall décor, but they’re really not important. As long as I got hair, and Abbey works her magic in our ATX, my scalp will be in her chair. ShAZAM!

Jenna is super friendly and easy to talk to and while I’m never thrilled about haircuts(Hahaha, I think I just have issues with change) I have to say she did an excellent job. Definitely coming back.

This is less about the Haircut Store and more about Beard Artist Abbey Gapko, who did my beard. Friends got me a birthday gift certificate from Abbey to trim and shape my bird’s nest of a beard. With slight trepidation and a bit of anxiety, I scheduled a time to have Abbey try to tame the beast. On the appointed day, I walked in. Now, stepping back a bit, I’ve trimmed my own beard before. And it’s almost always been a disaster, to the point where I’ve had to shave everything off and start over. Instant regret, and a cursed few weeks til a beard once again graced my naked face. So I knew I could not be trusted with scissors or clippers anywhere near my visage. Enter Abbey, whose online portfolio a friend showed me as a subtle attempt to convince me she’d found someone who could do the job I knew I needed done. I’d heard horror stories from other beardos about being mutilated beyond belief by barbers who didn’t know beards, so I was hesitant, I was nervous — I could slash and mutilate and dismember my beard just as well as anyone else and save a few bucks. But I saw what Abbey did with other beards, so I bit the bullet. Okay, stage set. I go in, and was greeted by Abbey and somebody else(Lizzy? Jenna? I don’t know names). Their A/C had gone out earlier in the day so it was sweltering inside, but they offered me a beer from the fridge and I happily took it, in part to counter the heat, in part to steel my nerves for what was to come. Abbey called me over to the chair, and we talk about what I wanted — a little taming, a little shaping, nothing drastic as far as length, and leave the mustache alone — I may not have the best beard, but I’ve gotten plenty of compliments from beardos and non-beardos alike about my mustache, so I didn’t want that touched. Abbey patiently listened to my concerns and engaged in small talk while she artfully crafted my beard. I learned how and why she got into beards, and she learned about the world of facial hair clubs and bearding competitions. Soon, her work was done, and my beard finally looked less beastly. Now, to the casual observer who doesn’t see me every day, they might not understand the work that was done, but I noticed, as did others who see me on a daily basis. What Abbey did for the most part was subtle but significant, and I absolutely trust her with my beard from here on out — it was nothing I could do on my own, and I don’t know I would entrust my beard to anyone who doesn’t appreciate beards the way Abbey does. I’ll also let the compliments I got from people stand as a testament to Abbey’s work. So if you a beardo or know a beardo whose past attempts at self-shaping have ended in disaster, give Abbey a call. She’ll listen to your concerns and will work with you to get you the beard you deserve to have on your face.

My hair is like a wild mustang – swift and unpredictable. I come to Lizzy because she knows how to tame the beast. I’ve had the privilege of patronizing her shop for almost three years now. Lizzy understands my hair; she’s one of the few who is able to whip it into shape. I have never gone anywhere else(except for this one time a couple years back when Lizzy couldn’t fit me in at late notice, and I had to go to some other place that gave me a horrible haircut). Her operation is humble, which I appreciate. She doesn’t have the most convenient hours(Tues. to Sat. 10:30 to 5:30), but she’s committed to working hard to please her clients. If you’re unsatisfied with a cut, she offers you a complimentary fix-it trim session. I’ve never used this option. She consistently does a good job. Probably some of the best haircuts I’ve gotten, and for a lot cheaper than my last haircutter. The thing with Lizzy, though, is that she limits the amount of clients that she has. The Unilocal reader will have to call ahead to see if she’s taking new clients. And she’s so busy that you basically have to plan your appointments at least two weeks in advance, which is difficult if your hair grows at random speeds like mine does. Lizzy may not have the nicest shop or the most convenient business model, but she does knows how to cut hair. Come here if you want to get your hair done well.

I’ve been going to Jenna for multiple haircuts at this point, following her from place-to-place like some haircut nomad. She remains the shear-slinging stylist Austin deserves. It’s not just our common Southeast Texas roots that keeps me invested as her client — Consistency, creativity when called for, and a steady hand are her hallmarks. I’ve not once walked away thinking, «What the hell did she do to my hair?!» — she has an eye for stylish and classy that I’d been hard-pressed to find, keeping me from looking like overly-nerdy dad and instead transforming me into an overly-nerdy dad with an awesome haircut.

As I stated above, I scheduled another appointment to let Jenna prove her skills. She chose to quit– just called and fired me a a client because of my earlier review. If you try The Haircut Store, maybe try Lizzie?

This review is ridiculously overdue by probably about a year and a half. My half bald head may be an easy, quick cut and frankly I could probably buzz cut it myself, but why would I do that when Lizzy is two blocks from my office? She’s the best barber /hair stylist that I’ve ever had in my 4 decades of life and it’s always a treat to go and shoot the breeze with such a lovely person. She’s always booked up pretty solidly — but can find a few moments to squeeze an appt in, often in short order. That’s good news for a procrastinating fool like me. I agree with some other posters, she’s actually too inexpensive for the service she provides, but that’s what tips are for. The collective love she gets here on this site and her busy schedule is completely unsurprising.

A LONGOVERDUEREVIEW of the Haircut Store! I met Lizzy in my second year of law school thanks to Unilocal.I was tired of blah haircuts and I needed something priced reasonably and done well. I know, I know, no easy task. Enter the Haircut Store. The first time I walked in and met Lizzy she was extremely personable, friendly, and accommodating. Unfortunately, the secret had been let out and Lizzy informed me she had a 1.5 — 2 week wait for haircuts. I made an appointment and came back to see her a week and a half later. I allowed her to cut my hair in a way that she felt would make me look good… this is what she does so I felt she would know best. ANDDD she did! The bill: $ 15. I always loved my haircuts so much that I gave her a total of $ 25 because she charges too little for how good she really is. Like a past ex-gf you can’t get over, no one can ever compare to Lizzy. I’ve graduated and moved away from Austin and each time I get a haircut I feel a sense of emptiness. Lizzy is the best and she’s incredibly affordable. Just make your appointments far in advance and maintain a consistent schedule with her to ensure you’ll be seen. She loves what she does and it shows. A++++

Lizzie has been cutting my hair for a few years now and i HIGHLY recommend her. I often come in with a vague idea of what i want and let her have free reign. I have never been disappointed, infact, I always get a ton of compliments. Her haircuts are reasonably priced too. make an appointment. you wont regret it. :)

After breaking up with my stylist of 15 years in the most cowardly way possible, I was in the market for a place that was inexpensive, conveniently located, and down to earth. I found all three at the Haircut Store and more. Lizzie is great! She is incredibly easy to talk to and always gives a good cut. I never have any apprehension about her cutting my hair since she does what you ask her to do… every time. She’s also very reasonably priced and is full of good advice about styling products or anything else hair related. She’s saved me tons of money on my hair and I look forward to each haircut because I get to bask in her sunny attitude!

You know you are chummy with your hair person when they ask you if you want your eyebrows trimmed. At first I was embarrassed by the question but then I was relieved. It is hard to trim those suckers. Another awesome haircut and eyebrow trim!

I must say that I have had several awesome hair related experiences here. Lizzie is awesome and skilled. I went in and asked her to make me look sexy, because I read a review that someone had written. She laughed and with a wave of her magic scissors, it worked! On a serious note, I really enjoy the atmosphere Lizzie brings and she is very talented. I only go to her from now on. I wonder if she does beards…

There are few people in this town who I trust with my hair and Lizzie is one of them. I have gone from long to short and everything in between and no matter how basic or outlandish my suggestions are, Lizzie is a master at her craft and always does an amazing job. Every time I get a new haircut(which is more than the avg. girl because my hair changes with my mood) I get millions and millions of compliments on it. So much in fact I have to keep Lizzie’s business cards on me at all times to pass out to randoms who love my cut!!! Old school barbershop charm!!! The Hair Cut store is my go to hair place and LIzzie is my go to hair girl!!!

I thought that I was not picky about hair cuts or the way that my hair looks in general. That was before I stepped into the awesome time warp that The Hair Cut Store is. On a suggestion from some friends who also visit this local shop I was ready for the normal hair cut experience. Which usually starts with an argument about who is more qualified to know how hair should be cut me or the person doing the cutting.(Again that is because I don’t know what a good hair cut is) I came in and Ms. Todd offered me a free Lone Star while she finished up with her other customer. I was then offered a place in the throne of doom, my words not hers. Here is where the trouble usually begins. Ms. Todd — «How should I cut your hair?» Me — «I don’t care, just make sure it looks cool.» That was the end of the discussion, I might have added«You’re the one who went to school for this.» That is exactly what she did. When it was all said and done I walked out a happy customer. I used to go to Birds, but that was pure torture. I always felt like I was being put on trial for my hair with the incessant questions and discussions about what product to use. Drove me wild. Now I have a perfect place to go and get my hair cut that is right near campus where I work.

This place is great and Lizzie rocks! I had a vague image in my head of what I wanted and Lizzie made it happen like a mind reader. I have straight, flat hair that doesn’t like to do anything and she made it look good. She showed me how to style it at home, with tips that I could actually do. The atmosphere is laid back and comfortable; Lizzie is friendly and fun… and gives a nice haircut.
