As a New York transplant to Austin, my culinary expectations have gone through an adjustment period. Austin is a wonderful city to sample a wide range of amazing food. The adjustments I have made have less to do with«is there great food?» And more to do with«what’s great here and where do I find it?» Luckily, the Asian food I craved then, I still crave and have found outlets to satisfy those cravings. Pizza and Bagels??? No such luck beyond a few promising, but still lacking spots. My new friend is helping me transition through this period of loss. That friend is Texas BBQ. As far as I’m concerned, this is the signature food of Austin and is worthy of worldwide acclaim. The Salt Lick’s and Freedmens of the world have opened me up to a whole new world of deliciousness. I tell my friends in NY that they need to put this on their bucket list and get down here fast. For some of these friends and family there is a wrinkle that makes this difficult: They are Kosher, and follow strict dietary guidelines that prohibit the mixing of dairy and meet, do not allow pork or shellfish, and of course rely on Kosher Beef, which much be humanely slaughtered under the careful supervision of an official who is certified to do so. Such an official or Masgiach is not readily present in Austin, as Austin does not have a large enough Kosher population to support this sort of job full time. Enter Joebob’s!!! What happens when you take an accomplished Texas BBQ PitMaster who also happens to be well versed in the arts and regulations of Kosher Cuisine, and a reputable Mashgiach borrowed from Houston and set them to work over Brisket, 3 kinds Ribs, beans, Chicken and Turkey? Pure Kosher Magic!!! While not kosher myself, I have many friends, family and colleagues who are. Joebob’s has made it possible for me to show them a side of Texas they otherwise would have been shut out of. But that’s not all. The BBQ is delicious… kosher or not. This is a win win situation. Kosher meat is a costly process, so be prepared to shell out a few more shekels. Also, part of the Kashering process has the meat being salted to remove excess blood. Joebobs has a knack for deftly working that salt content neatly into the finished product and gives up surprisingly little of that coveted moisture content. I thank the staff at Joebobs first and foremost for providing this wonderful service and filling the void. I also appreciate how kind and accommodating they have been. Consider me a new but loyal customer!
