If you’re wondering why this place doesn’t have many reviews, it used to be called The Sugar Shack BBQ. The rest of its reviews can be found here: With that being said, this place has some great BBQ! I recently had the Notorious P.I.G. and the Texas Two Step with brisket. Notorious P.I.G. is their classic, and with good reason. The pulled pork is absolutely delicious and goes extremely well with their custom BBQ sauce and coleslaw. The Texas Two Step comes with two types of meat(sausage + meat of your choice) and is just as solid, as they do a fantastic job with the sausage as well. The best part? For $ 7, you can get two wraps that are legitimately filling. There are a few other BBQ places in West Campus, but none of them can match the value you get from Slab BBQ!

First of all ill start by saying that I don’t like pork too much, but when I went I was going to get the Texas two-step, but I was talked out of it and ended up getting the Notorious P.I.G. which was a great decision. The pork i slow-smoked for a good time and man it’s as soft as it comes! Will definitely be coming back to try what else they have to offer. The service was prompt and friendly which is perfect if you are trying to get a bite to eat in between classes! Great food check it out!

Hells yeah! Slammin’ BBQ on a budget! I went yesterday and the food was good, the service was friendly and fast and since the kids are out of school the place was deserted. Oh, and though the truck and name appear to be different the contact info is the same, so it’s the right place.

So first lets clear some things up. This place was awesome my freshman and sophomore year. Then the pittmaster left and started the bbq trailer that is ON campus at 21st, right next to dobie. As a frequent visitor, I have to say that Hog Wild is where the talent is at! Nothing against Sugar Shack(who got to keep the name), which is still pretty good since I’ve been back, but I can definitely tell the difference over at Hog Wild. Everyday there’s a line forming at HW and you just cant resist that smell when you’re walkin to classes. I’m from Arkansas and been to many bbq champions and even the World Championships in Memphis. While Texas is all about the beef, you can’t find near as good pig. SS, and now HW, has supplemented my cravings, and then some! I’m even having HW cater my graduation party. So while SS is good, just wanted to make sure ppl know it’s not the same place it once was! They took their talents to South Campus!

This place is a hidden gem. Seriously, if you havent tried it yet, you’re missing out on freakin good bbq!!! It’s now one of my favorite places to grab food around campus. Love the Texas 2-step wrap with chicken and the Notorious PIG. I still cant believe that they can get chicken breast meat that tender and juicy! And the pulled pork is to die for! It’s just heavenly… so juicy and tender and delicious! Great prices and everything comes with ½lb. of meat. The only thing is you have to get there at really specific times because they close once they sell out for the day. Their hours are M-F 11−3p and there’s no where to sit. It’s literally a grab and go kind of place. Despite all that, it’s still the food that gets 5 stars! SOOOOGOOOD… I want another one right now :)

OMG, Sugar Shack’s pulled pork is just heavenly, so juicy and tender and delicious! I bought a Notorious P.I.G. and unfortunately I couldn’t eat it right away, I thought my sammich would get stale. I couldn’t have been more wrong, despite being only lukewarm, it was still ridiculously yummy.

I’m not going to say that I’m a vegetarian, but I’ll say that I don’t really eat meat. but when I do eat meat, and like most vegetarians I do sometimes eat meat, I want it to be worth it. sugar shack brisket sliders were worth it, that cow tasted delicious. brisket is not an easy thing to get right. I like that sugar shack brisket was lean and still tender and juicy. I’d eat that meat again. to you vegetarians looking for a quick carnivore diversion, this is worth your consideration. I like that the sliders came with plenty of «fixins».

I stopped by their trailer today which was off 7th and the I-35 frontage road downtown for SXSW. I have seen them over by UT before and was excited to try this place out. The only issue I have with this trailer is they don’t serve BBQ like most BBQ places around town which is by the pound. They serve sandwhiches and wraps and they often mix the meat with sauce or pickles or coleslaw. I’m not a coleslaw or pickles person so this place never really appealed to me. However, today I was able to sample their pulled pork with their mustard coleslaw(I hate coleslaw and mustard) and it was really good. I initially ordered without the slaw but changed it up and decided to have them throw it on there. It was a great flavor and texture combo. I appreciate that they aren’t trying to conform to the norms of how every other BBQ place sells their product. The place was super friendly and I would definietely return to check their brisket. If you are in a toss up between this and the Mo Betta BBQ trailer next door, read my Mo Betta review and you will see how they compare — I tried both today, no contest this place easily crushed it. Only thing that would possibly help would be a couple chairs to enjoy this as the wraps are a bit messy.

The Sugar Shack is probably the best food cart in the immediate UT campus area and is a great place to grab some quick BBQ. The portions are quite sizable considering the price($ 5.50 for a sandwich) and absolutely worth the wait(can be long if only one person is working). The Notorious P.I.G., their trademark sandwich, is a mouth-watering mixture of 12-hour slow smoked pulled pork, homemade mustard-based coleslaw, and tangy red BBQ sauce. The Sugar Shack is open late and conveniently located just off The Drag for any starving West Campus students.

My favorite food trailer, bar none. They win across all criteria: The portions are generous, the prices are low, the owner is friendly, they’re open late, and the meat is delicious. Sometimes it may be a little smokier or dryer than usual, but it’s still amazing. Make sure you get pickles + jalapenos + onions on your wraps. The sliders are worth trying as well.

3.5 stars. I had a Living Social voucher, so I ordered 2 of each wrap to split with a friend. *Notorious P.I.G. — The pork is really moist and flavorful. My only complaint is that they ran out of coleslaw(around 2:30PM) so I didn’t get a chance to try it. *The Bama Jama — I am definitely not a fan of their white Alabama-style BBQ sauce. It was so sour. I didn’t even want to finish my wrap, but my friend liked hers. *The Texas 2-Step — My favorite out of the 3! I thought the brisket was a little heartier and more flavorful than the pork, and the combination of it with the sausage packed even more flavor. If I ever go back, I would definitely order this one again. They put a lot of meat in the wraps, and one is filling enough for a quick lunch. A total of 6 wraps(buy one, get one for $ 2) cost me $ 18.

I’m surprised that there aren’t many Unilocal reviews for this place, but it’s probably because it’s not the most conveniently located — it’s a bummer that their 6h street location is only open for special events. I have to agree with Rebecca L about not being able to rely on their website for their hours. I, too, also got the run-around for a couple of months. Tired of having my lunch plans thwarted, I called them up one day and spoke directly to the owner, Mark, and voiced my complaints. Mark was super nice about the whole thing and told me to just make sure I call ahead of time. He even accepted my expired vouchers! Now that is awesome customer service. Now on to the food — I always chose to have the meat in a wrap rather than a sandwich. 1) Notorious PIG — 12 hour slow smoked pulled pork with a mustard based coleslaw and red bbq sauce. This one was my most favorite. The coleslaw went well with the pulled pork, and the bbq sauce made an already moist pulled pork even more moist. This is their signature item, and now I know why. =) 2) The Bama Jama — smoked chicken breast with onions, white alabama style bbq sauce and a hint of red sauce. I never knew chicken breast could be so tender! I think it would have tasted better with more of the red sauce than the white sauce. 3) The Texas 2-Step — chopped brisket and smoked sausage with pickles, onions, and red bbq sauce. On paper this sounds good, but taste wise it was pretty underwhelming. The brisket was not all that tender — not even the red sauce could save it. The sausage did have a nice kick to it, but not enough to make it super tasty. All in all I was pretty impressed with Sugar Shack. I guess it was worth the wait and frustration after all. The portions are enormous, and they stuff their wraps as full as they can. My biggest complaint was the amount of sauce they used. Maybe if I ordered it as a sandwich it would’ve absorbed the sauce better, but if I did not eat my wrap right away, I would be left with an extremely soggy wrap. That’s what happened with my Bama Jama — the tortilla was drenched in the white sauce, so I ended up only eating the chicken. Sugar Shack is also a more grab n go type of place since it’s just a random stand on a corner at West Campus with nowhere to sit or park. It’s a great location for students, but a challenge to get to for anybody else. I normally call my order in beforehand and park ‘illegally’ in the shopping center across the street.

The Sugar Shack has been giving me the runaround for a couple of months. I have tried to go there at least 4 times, and every time they are closed. Those hours on their website are a lie! Although the last time I tried to go they were probably closed because of construction. Anyway, today they were finally open when I walked up! Miracle. They were out of brisket though :(so I got a Texas Two-Step with chicken. The sandwich is pretty big, and $ 7 gets you the ginormous sandwich, chips, and a soda. The chicken was really good, tender and moist. I got it with jalepenos, pickles and onions; I have to say it’s probably one of the best sandwiches I’ve ever had. Well, except for Fricano’s, but they deserve a category of their own. 5 stars for the food, but 1 star off for not updating their website to reflect their new hours(whatever they might be.) And also not updating their Twitter every day like Chilantro or Coreanos.

I like the owner, I like the barbecue sauce, and I like the rolls. The meat was ok, but the sauce made it. We tried the Notorious P.I.G.(pulled pork with slaw) and the chicken sandwich. I’d say the pork was a tad dry, but the sauce saved it. The chicken was moist, but not terrifically flavorful. They are only open weekdays during lunch hours, so unless you work right there, it might be a challenge to get there when they’re open. We went when we had a day off. This is probably a great location for UT students, though.

We didn’t go to this particular location, but we got to try Sugar Shack at the Cupcake Smackdown. We ordered 3 sammies, the Notorious P.I.G.(smoked pulled pork, cole slaw and BBQ sauce), JJ’s Dynomite(sausage, cole slaw, pickles, &BBQ sauce), & the Texas 2 step(sausage, brisket, pickles, bbq sauce). While the P.I.G. was good, it was a little dry. I really enjoyed the JJ’s Dynomite, and loved the cole slaw, it was an awesome addition. Hubby loved his Texas 2 Step. The sauce was good too, and the employees were so nice! We will definitely be back to Sugar Shack!

Oh crap. Well now I’m in quite the pickle. The Sugar Shack BBQ moved to the east side. Two. Blocks. From. Work. It’s going to be a challenge to not eat here every day for lunch. Their pulled pork + coleslaw + pickle sandwich(AKA«Notorious P.I.G.) is awesome. I also tried a bite of Brad’s(of Q-Card fame) chicken sandwich with white sauce and it was also to die for. Now, I know what you’re thinking — Damn former vegetarian… gives all BBQ places five stars. Let me set the record straight. I like… LOVE what these folks have going on. Do yourself a favor and head to The Sugar Shack.

No matter how much college kids rave about a place, I just cannot bring myself to think that an eatery in a college neighborhood could be any good, much less offer good BBQ. BBQ should be a thing eaten in a rustic, primal setting. Schlepped swine(pulled pork) need not be served next to college construction. Extended-period-of-time roasted cattle chest(brisket) does not need to be offered on a traditional Mexican grain(tortilla). Especially not next to a Starbucks and large dormitory complex. I ordered my two things: the Notorious P.I.G. and the Bama Jama and was on my way. My thoughts were as follows: I do not normally order pulled pork in Texas, as I sort of want to have the real stuff in North Carolina, and who would want chicken breast for BBQ? Furthermore, why eat BBQ in a tortilla or on hard submarine bread? I bit into my pulled pork and it melted right into my mouth. I even had that phenomenon where you bit into some meat and the tug just kept dragging out more. They give you really nice hunks of swine here. If it was not smothered in its red sauce, I may have even given this place a 5! Too bad I could not tell the real quality of its juiciness. The sauce is delicious here though! The coleslaw was also a nice zesty touch. The BJ(chicken breast and onion) was surprisingly soft. It was chopped up and was slightly bland. Good thing the red sauce was on this one. The meat was tender, and the crusty bread was a great compliment. I was really surprised by the quality of the meat here and the prices, $ 3.50 a wrap; $ 5.50 for a huge ½ lb. sandwich. Normally good places already charge you $ 6 for a ½ lb. Sugar Shack borders on non-traditional Texas Q, but it does a good job, and it is a fine BBQ joint in an unorthodox setting.

Hands down best BBQ in Austin! AND its super cheap! The Notorious P.I.G. is heaven-sent! Whoever came up with the idea of taking everything you would find on a BBQ plate and putting in a wrap is a genius! Awesome BBQ + Mustard-based cole slaw + pickles + jalapenos + onions + tortilla wrap = 1 slap-your-momma-good Texas lunch! When I walk past this place I literally cannot help myself. The smell of charcoal grilling up some fantastic meats tantalizes my taste buds every time! The cooks are really cool too; they’ll add or substitute whatever you want. Rumor has it, this place is getting a flat-screen TV behind it where the tables and chairs are. Can you say, new favorite lunch spot?

12:03PM I ordered Plucker’s delivery anticipating to eat some finger-licking good wings while studying for my final at 2PM. The Plucker’s employee said it would here within the hour. 1:10PM no sign of them, I called asking for my food as I would be leaving in 20 minutes to catch the bus for my final. 1:30PM no delivery guy, I called to cancel my order and rush to the UTC to take my test. On the way I pass sugar shack and always wondered why I never tried it despite the smoky goodness I am blessed with smelling around that area. I make a mental note to go back after my test. I recently«graduated» this past weekend with 2 finals left to take. I’ve been at UT for 4.5 years and I’m pretty good at navigating the campus. I walked into the destination to find a Calculus final to my horror instead of Interpersonal Communication Theory. I’m frantic at this point — did I misread the room number or time? Good lord, did I miss my test? I ran to the nearest computer lab to pull up the test information and I realized that I am actually… 1 day early. Well, I’m sure glad a diploma isn’t a certification of common sense. With a new countdown of 24 hours ahead of me, I had some time to stop by Sugar Shack and order a Notorious P.I.G and Texas Two Step Wrap for $ 5.50. With tax it came out to $ 5.95. As I walked back to my apartment I couldn’t wait to stuff my face. Holy moly, the pulled pork in the Notorious P.I.G was incredibly tender. I’ve been accustomed to dried pork but this was really tender, smoky, and flavorful. The mustard slaw complemented the pork really well and this wrap was gone in an instance. The Texas Two Step is pretty much amazing. It’s chopped brisket and sausage with onions and pickles(I opted out of the jalapenos). It’s everything bbq that I could ask for in one delicious wrap. What a series of fortunate events. Good thing I missed my Pluckers for a test I was a day early for to end up stuffing my face with bbq wraps from Sugar Shack’s.

Sugar Shack BBQ has a mobile trailer in the parking lot next to UT’s University Catholic Center. I remember a different restaurant there before, so I don’t think they have been there for very long. I consider myself to be a pretty freakin’ classy lady, but I completely forgot my home training after the first bite of their delectable Texas O.G. Sandwich(brisket). The pecan wood they used made it amazingly tender with that distinctive flavor that you can only get when the meat has been smoked for several hours. The BBQ sauce was a perfect accompaniment. It was tangy and thin, but not runny and was absolutely delicious. The lady at the counter even came out and wiped my the table area down because it rained a little earlier that morning. Before I knew it, I was licking my fingers and continually stuffing my face for all of the UT general public to see. At that point I didn’t even care because I was in BBQ heaven.
