I bought a to-go order of «Vanilla Chicken». The menu said it was a sweet white sauce… Yeah Not Really. Also, the cook and the cashier were struggling with my choice of lunch, so maybe they were out of ingredients? I opened my box when I got back to work and it was literally, not exaggerating at all, fried chicken with mayonnaise dolloped over it. I cannot believe that they would ever serve this. Nothing was added to the mayonnaise, it was literally right out of the jar set over the chicken. Also, the Crab Puffs were old and very small(I got there at about 1:30PM. The fried rice was edible, but I could tell that it had been sitting for at least ½ an hour. I will say that the EGGDROP soup was awesome. That was the only thing that tasted fresh and it had great flavor. This was yesterday. I still have the box of food so I can take it to them and inquire as to how this happened. I am usually very very easy to please, but this is just plain ridiculous. All of my coworkers felt so bad that they even offered to share their lunches. ALSO, it was 15 bucks! Are you freaking kidding me?!

My roommate and I were so excited to try Sunhing today! However, when we got there, we found out it was actually closed… and it looks like it’s closed permanently. Giving it 3 stars for neutral… really just wanted to let everyone know. SUNHINGISCLOSED.

I randomly ordered from here one time because I was craving American Chinese food. I ordered delivery and it was here within 20 minutes. I had the Lemon Chicken(which I loved because it was cut up into small pieces) with fried rice, the crab wontons(which I ate, but probably wouldn’t order again) and an eggroll(which I should have ordered double of). No it’s not super healthy but if you’re craving pretty good, reliable chinese food, I’d recommend this place.

This is my go-to place for quick, consistent Chinese food. I’ve only ever ordered delivery, and this is one of my favorite things about Sunhing– sometimes the lady will quote you 40 minutes but I always get it in 20, and I live in Hyde Park. They don’t provide great service, but they’re always reasonable and consistent. The dishes and portion sizes never change, and I even ordered at 9:55pm one time, and they delivered to my apartment(this was when I lived in West Campus). What I get: Beef Pan Fried Noodle, Egg Drop Soup, Tofu Vegetable Soup, and an egg roll. It’s enough to last me a few days and everything’s so yummy and fresh. I’ve also heard the sesame beef is pretty good, but haven’t tried it myself. As some of the other viewers have mentioned, the lady taking orders will hang up right after you give her your order and card number. You HAVETO ask her how much it’s going to be and when it’s going to be ready right after you give her all of that information. It’s one of the main reasons why I’ve docked a star– I kind of find it funny now that I’ve ordered from her for so many years, but it was infuriating the first few times. I wouldn’t recommend this place for a nice, sit down meal. I’ve been in once for pick-up and it was kind of dark and dingy inside. I’ve also heard that they will sometimes deliver pretty far, which is kinda cool.

So we ordered from Sunhing again at the request of my girlfriend. Once again, still no website. And also the woman taking the order just hangs up the phone without recapping, giving a total, or saying how long it will take. The delivery man called for me to come down from my apartment to meet up instead of asking for a gate code and delivering the food to us. The food was good. This time, I tried their Sweet and Sour Chicken. Very satisfying. I’m trying to control my portion sizes lately but this was good enough to make me go for seconds. The egg roll is still small and cheap. It would be nice if they included some sauce packets for the egg roll. Otherwise, decent. I am getting tired of the neglect in service though.

I don’t really remember how I found this place — probably walking along Guadalupe with friends. Actually, now that I really think about it, I think my friend and I went here because the Torchy’s next door was flippin’ packed and this place was pretty quiet. I usually get the wonton soup. The portion is huge and I’m always really full after finishing it. It’s always been consistently pretty good, so no complaints there. The only other thing I’ve tried was the pepper steak, and it’s been good the few times I’ve gotten it. The woman who serves you is pretty quiet, but attentive. I’ve never received bad service. Sure, she doesn’t smile much and isn’t a talker, but that doesn’t bother me. Now that I don’t live on campus anymore, I hardly ever eat here. I did go back a few months ago, though, and the pepper steak was just as I remembered it. It may not be the best food, but I like the comfort that comes from the consistency. Would I go out of my way to eat here? Probably not, but I will at least make a return visit sometime in the distant future.

Walked in and regretted not walking right back out. This is the dirtiest place I’ve ever seen. The popcorn ceiling and vents were layered with thick, dark dust from years of neglect. There were random Christmas decorations hanging, and it’s March. The walls around the tables were covered in splatters of food. Where the wall and floor come together on the front wall, we could see light coming through the the entire length of the wall, like the wall had just been set on top of the floor and was open to the outdoor elements. The outdoor carpet used inside was filthy and smelled like feet. Despite the looks of the place, the first thing I noticed was the smell of rotting food. We were seated at a table promptly and felt it was too late to back out. I got the vanilla shrimp, which was really walnut shrimp, and my boyfriend got the sauteed broccoli and streamed rice. The shrimp was described as being tossed in a vanilla/mayonaise based sauce, but was just fried shrimp with thick flavorless mayonaise squeezed over top. My boyfriend’s broccoli looked like it had been cooked then the brown sauce was just poured over top. Oh and the hall leading to the bathroom was covered with cardboard, like homeless people had been sleeping back there. This review will probably never be read by the owners, because they don’t seem like the type to care. This place is stuck in the past, back before antiseptics and sewage systems. I’m honestly just really happy that we didn’t get food poisoning. And am amazed that this place hasn’t been shut down by the health department.

This review is PURELY on their SESAMECHICKEN. After reading all the«reassuring» reviews, I felt so reluctant and quite frankly afraid to eat here. But I love generic Chinese food aka Chinese American food. When I called to order take out, the Asian lady hung up as soon as she said the food would be ready in 10 minutes! She didn’t even ask for a name or anything. But when we walked into the restaurant to pick up our food, it was ready for us. Taking a good look around the place, it is definitely old and sort of dingy. I wouldn’t ever eat here but I would definitely come back for their sesame chicken. It’s way better than Hoa hoa’s IMO.

Went for lunch. Their lunch special was way overpriced for the product. The fried rice was dried out and old with no vegetables or anything in it. I ordered general Tso chicken which was a few fried pieces of chicken covered in a brown sauce. the price was not at all justified by the quality of the food. I do not recommend this place.

Tips: Vegetarians: Get the steamed vegetable dumplings and the egg drop soup. If you park in their lot off of Guadalupe, be ready to either hit a car or a pedestrian coming out of the parking lot. DONOT try to park there during rush hour on Guadalupe. If you are ordering to go, call early — you will be waiting there for a while, but they might mess up your order anyways. Food: The food is delicious and the ingredients taste fresh. The soy sauce that comes with the dumplings is delicious. Take a gamble on the egg drop soup. 50% chance it will have a good amount of egg and 50% chance it will be all broth. Additional review not by me — the kung pao chicken was hearty with lots of peanuts, vegetables and a delicious sauce. Service: Horrible. I ordered vegetable dumplings and repeated twice that I wanted VEGETABLENOTPORKDUMPLINGS. Of course I get pork dumplings and bring them all the way home. When I told her that I was coming back and needed my vegetable dumplings, she asked me to bring the old dumplings and gave me a snarky look since one of them had a bite in it. UM how am I supposed to find out the dumplings are wrong without taking a bite??? Just annoying. Ambiance — standard Chinese restaurant. Nothing special. You can look up your year and Chinese symbol on a placemat.

Sunhing bills itself as an authentic Chinese/Viet restaurant. The Chinese dishes are mediocre, the duck is dry, the sauce is lacking. Their Viet food fare a little bit better(the owners are Viet-Chinese) and I’m just disappointed. For that amount, I expected better quality and more food. Their food was just dry and not good! I’d go to any other restaurant!

Found this little nugget after discovering Dobie mall’s Chinese food restaurant to be closed on Saturdays. I also got a tip that it was pretty good. Pros: –You can order pretty much anything. I wanted Kung-Poa sauce on the Sweet and Sour crispy chicken and they made it for me. –Waitstaff is quick –I love paying as I walk out and not at the table –Ambiance Cons: –Something funky is going on with the bathrooms. It’s deceiving. You open the door and are in a scene from The Matrix. A long hallway with many doors(and some with obscure signs). At least they were clean! –Pretty standard Americanized Chinese food(except for select dishes) which you can get elsewhere Overall, it’s where I eat on a Saturday when I want Chinese near campus.

OMG! the only reason I wont give them one star is bc they delivered to my job. Otherwise, one star for sure! I ordered two dinner combos. $ 20 dolla. Delivery fee, $ 3 dolla. My order of Shrimp with lobster sauce was atrocious! I mean, are the carrots supposed to be raw??? It was like they forgot to throw in the carrots way before cooking the shrimp. Fried rice; salty!!! Egg roll was the highlight of my dinner. Saaaad, saaaad place!

I haven’t been back since my traumatic experience a while ago. But it’s worth mentioning. A group of us ordered a large take out order, I started to take bites of everyone’s food and the food wasn’t too bad so far. I bit into my eggroll and found myself biting into a metal screw… made my mouth bleed a little. Went back to the restaurant at the behest of my friend and the manager didn’t apologize or express any concern, all they asked is if I wanted my dollar back or another eggroll.

I stepped into this restaurant with a disclaimer from my friend who didn’t think I would like food. This in fact, turned out to be untrue, as the food was palatable. The service, however, was comical and made for a bizarre experience. After being seated, I remarked to my friend about the décor of the place. No, I wasn’t referring to the tacky Chinese interior design, but the spray of various sauces that were undoubtedly splashed along the wall by our table. Seconds later, we were greeted by a server(owner?) who seemed less than interested in doing her job. After asking for our beverage order, she zoomed off before I could make a peep. I was slightly appalled, but burst into laughter after I realized what happened. Now to be fair, this was the first Friday of the school year for UT, and students were spilling in, but I have never experienced anything like that. After the drink ordering debacle, we played host to an older gentleman who seemed to have it together. I was able to get on with my food order and requested the vegetable lo mein, which was a decent dish. My friend had me order the seemingly customary sake bomb, which turned out to be another sequence of hilarity. Just as we did, every other table in the joint got their sake bombs on, and the UT students began pounding their tables in cacophonous rapture, as their shot glasses dropped in between their chopsticks into the depth of beer below. It was yet another bizarre sight, which my friend and I ultimately emulated. Everything else went fine, the food, as I said was eatable, and the transaction at the door passed with ease. I don’t know if I’ll return but at least I can say I had fun.

Craving Chinese food, i walked the half mile to this restaurant on Guadelupe. The atmosphere is tacky Chinese, and the food matched it. I ordered my staple, Kung Pao Chicken with Hot & Sour Soup. The soup was hot but tasteless. No spice whatsoever, and being a Louisiana boy that is an unforgivable sin. The Kung Pao was equally bland even though they have«hot» warning next to it on the menu. The fortune cookie was everything I expected, and was the highlight of the meal. I like going to places I can walk to from my office, but I won’t be going back to this place.

This place is dirty, very slow service and food is disgusting! First and last time eating at this restaurant! The wonton soup was lukewarm not hot enough for soup andthe wonton was hard and tasted stale. The shrimp egg foo young was ok. Don’t get the jalapeño shrimp or shrimp fried rice… gross! It was a total waste of our money!!! We left and went next door to Torchy’s Tacos… amazing tacos! Thank GOD something was still open and very close … that saved the night! Save your time and above all — money… eat elsewhere but not at Sun Hing. If you want good chinese food, just wait and go elsewhere.

I found a pubic hair in my food from here. When I tried returning my food, they called the cops. Upon the officers arrival, I was finally given my refund, BUT no apology! Do not eat here. If it happened to me, it could happen to you as well.

I’ve been eating at Sun Hing since the early 90s, and it’s never really changed. It’s not the best food I’ve ever had, but it’s consistent and dependable and comforting and good, like an old favorite bathrobe. I nearly always order the shrimp with vegetables lunch special, somewhere in the neighborhood of $ 7 – 8, about what it’s cost for the past decade. The veggies always taste fresh, the shrimp are clean and good, the sauce is light and delicious and well-proportioned to the dish, and it’s like that every single time I go. It seems to have been largely staffed by the same people since I’ve been going too, I think the same family, and they feel like old friends, even though we’ve never spoken much, they’re not really talkers. Besides liking their food, I always feel really good about supporting such nice people and a good, local, old Austin business. Sun Hing does have perhaps the worst bun I’ve ever eaten, a recent addition to their menu, but you really shouldn’t be ordering Vietnamese food at a Chinese restaurant anyway. Just stick with the Chinese dishes, they’re really good.
