My husband and I did our apartment search by reading reviews and going to the offices to look at layouts. We initially had gotten a great vibe and decided to go with Steeplechase. Their location is great and probably the only thing going for them. My apartment is a two bedroom two bathroom. Priced at $ 850. On top of that we have trash removal of $ 15. Water is $ 45 – 60. So living here is sky high. With that the hot water heater is the worse. Being a female I love steamy showers. But since living here my shower times are about 5 – 10 minutes, taking in consideration for my husband and son to at least have a luke warm shower. The first week of moving in our bathroom sink had a major leak– where my make up was stored and closed up in a bag. My make up was all destroyed and I went out the following day to replace– which is all very expensive because I use MAC and hourglass brands only. Maintenance did come a couple days later to come fix the problem. We live on the ground level and late at night we get invested with bugs. Which we all know as «Rollie pollies». Or you might know them as pill bugs. They come out from under the carpets and by the walls and crawl all over the floors. The doors do not latch shut. Again– not a big deal. But a small problem that can become bothersome. I do not complain on sites, just usually to my girlfriends and husband. But honestly never on a site. I’m choosing to write this today because I am frustrated by the staff. My husband and I went to Florida for two weeks and came home to our bill for rent. We have some charges that are just ridiculous. I have to pay $ 45 because I did not put the electric in our name one day sooner. I do understand why, because our lease started the day before we moved in. When I called IPL I was told it would not be a big deal to put the date in our name starting that day. The office staff told me I needed to go back to IPL and complain to them and that it is not an issue with Steeple chase. Ultimately it’s the $ 45 that causes this to be my breaking point. Only having lived here for less than 2 months. Our lease is over December 25th. It will be a gift to our family to leave Steeple chase.

Had I reviewed Steeplechase when I moved in 5 years ago, I’d have probably given them mores stars. Unfortunately, the quality has declined rapidly and consistently over the years. Let’s start with the unit itself. The apartments are laid out very oddly. Lots of angles, making furniture placement fairly difficult, but we made it work. The room sizes don’t seem to have any rhyme or reason. The kitchen is small with the laundry machines wedged behind a closet door next to it. Yet our master bathroom is about the size of a dance floor with tons of wasted space, so take that into account when considering apartment size. They do offer solid floorplans on their web-site, so that is very helpful for planning. Parking is on-site in a lot and that is super convenient. Moving on to price, our rent has consistently increased annually and as such has gone from what seemed like a great deal to seemingly too expensive for what we’re getting. It’s a bit sad when I can get the same size apartment downtown for more money than I can get it in Avon, but of course, there are people out there that are truly looking for suburbia, so that’s a personal preference. Location, as far as Avon goes, is ideal. You have everything very close by including Super Target, Meijer, Best Buy, a variety of local and chain restaurants among much else. You could literally go years without going more than a mile away if you really wanted to. As far as maintenance goes, a lot of items in the units are of seemingly poor quality. We have had everything from doors coming off hinges to water leaking through the ceiling to the air conditioner going out on a hot day to every appliance in the unit breaking in some fashion at some point in our tenure here. However, the Steeplechase maintenance team is extremely responsive and helpful. We’ve never had to wait more than a day or two for a non-essential repair and never more than a couple hours for an essential repair. Problem is, some of the more pressing repairs have not been completed in good quality. For example, the ceiling leaked, causing pieces of the drywall and tape to fall off. When it was repaired(by a third party, I believe), they did not protect surfaces, so now we have spackle speckle on our countertops, sink, and areas of the carpet. Another major concern we have brought to their attention many times is the high energy consumption of our unit and the seeming lack of ability of the furnace to keep up on extra cold days. Our IPL report consistently says that we utilize 25−35% more electricity than others
