Affogato

Honestly, not surprised that this place ultimately closed. I first began writing when Affogato was had its soft opening. And here I am … finishing a review for a restaurant that no longer exists. What was once a preview is now a superfluous Review-​for-​the-​Sake-​of-​Reviewing. Also, just to cross off another item on the to-​do list.
So here’s what I remembered …
New gelato and coffee spot in Little Italy. Modern décor with espresso and coffee. Gelato was okay but nothing fancy. For whatever reason, I was going to give it 4 stars. I guess 3 will do.
Hmmm … must have been circa 2014.

Unfortunately, me and a couple of friends did not have the chance to dine in. The atmosphere looked like a nice place to study at. The food/​bakeries did not look appetizing. They almost looked as if they were bought from Costco and individually wrapped. We got peppermint latte and we got 2 cups, but each one differed vastly from one another (one had soy milk and one was regular). Even though it was different milk, the fact that the coffee tasted so different, it just amazed us. Also, the sizes of the coffee are a lot smaller than the cups at Starbucks. The outside lures customers in, but the drinks lure them out. I will definitely not be attending here agin.

It’s a great little neighborhood café & bar. I look forward to hanging out here (especially outside) when the weather gets warm!

There is a lot of potential here. Some thoughts for the owners: The large coffee in house is smaller than the to-​go coffee, yet you charge the same price. A website or Facebook page with hours of operation would improve business. The music is too loud for a café. You have some nice spirits behind the counter, but no visuals for customers to know what one can order. So, for example, maybe you should put up some martini glasses if that is what you intend to serve. Right now there are shot glasses. Capitalize on the what you have and come up with your own signature cocktail. 92Q is cool, but does not fit with the ambiance. The staff is very friendly. Please succeed! I want to give you my money!

OMG I want this place to do well… BUT apparently the owners want the opposite. I’ve heard soo many positive things about the nice couple that hopes to bring this nice café to the folks of little Italy/​harbor east… Nice people, nice space, great intentions… But so far, after a dozen or so trips to affogato, I’m about done giving them my business. Main reasons are pretty simple: decent product that could be fresher and the service is below average at best. Too many horror stories to list, so take my word for it — whole foods steps away is your best best. As a small business owner who wants nothing more than to see affogato succeed, I just wish the ownership team would play a more active/​day-​to-​day role in their business. I’ve even tried reaching out to them but the #667 number on the internet is no longer working… And no website nor a facebook site makes it hard to reach out to them. Sorry affogato, Unilocal is my only way to vent. One day I may give you another chance, but for now, you’ve lost me and my recommendations to my customers that ask where they can find a good gelato. I hope you the best, and please take this review as a stepping stone to do bigger and better things with your space. Good luck.

Beautiful space with lots of potential. The chocolate gelato was yummy, the caramel was icey and a bit sickly sweet. Really the worst part was the clerk. She had 92q blasting on the radio when we walked in to the completely empty space. It was so loud that it seemed that the clerk did not notice us standing at the gelato counter, when I got her attention over the loud music she told me to wait a minute. Apparently the post-​it note she was reading was more important. She never offered us anything or spoke about their offerings, she just stared at us until we figured out what we wanted. I would expect some sort of introduction from a new place… As soon as she finished checking us out, she walked around the counter and found a nice comfy spot on the padded benches to play on her cellphone even though we were right outside eating our gelato on the little patio space. Overall, very disappointing.

Very nice cozy place. Great Gelato. They also have Beer, Wine, Liquor and sandwich.
