A BAR down in the BAYOU My last eating experience in the south before I catch my plane! This little eatery is located in the teeny tiny airport in Baton Rouge. If you are a frequent traveler like me you can appreciate small airports. Tiny but pack a punch and have just what you need. No long lines or hassles and the employees seem WAAAAYY friendlier! So once I flew through security I stopped over here for some grub before I got on my flight! I had a bit of a wait since I was dropped of early because my original flight was canceled and I was forced to leave out of this airport an hour away from Lafayette, LA.(yet another small shot glass airport) or be stranded until Friday when United decided to open and schedule flights out of Lafayette. This is the ONLY place to get anything to eat or drink beside the 2 convenient stores located at the entrance as you walk into the airport and one upstairs. They have everything from chips, cookies, yogurt, salad, burgers, muffins and yummy food like red beans and rice. I’ve NEVER seen that served at an airport! And they have plenty of drinks both nonalcoholic and alcoholic depending on your preference. I decided to get a grilled chicken sandwich and onion rings and a bottle of tea. The last thing I needed was grease but I figured it would be my last hooray before I have to get back on the wagon from all the YUMMY eating I did for 4 days or so in the Big Easy! So I went sudo-healthy. I say sudo because grilled chicken is about as good as it gets without having to eat a salad, but then again I got the onion rings which scream«Chubbs-ville» but I didn’t care too much! I tried to relax and rest a bit while waiting for my food. Everyone seemed to be on a post-Mardi Gras high. Trying to get in the last little bit of fun and celebration before reality hits home. Thus staff and patrons were all in a festive yet exhausted mood! There was only 2 staff. One was in the bar area and the other was in the kitchen cooking up food. There was two seating areas. One was in the bar area and the other was just on the other side of the bar area separated by a mini iron rail. I guess it is so kids are NOT actually sitting in the bar area and thus all laws are being upheld! There is also a medium sized water fountain of sorts on the nonalcoholic side flanked with foliage and greenery. This place is SOOOO Not big by any stretch of the imagination. So once my order was ready I grabbed it and went to find an outlet to charge up my phone and of electrical devices before boarding the plane. Once I found a seat I dove in to my sandwich which was really quite good. The meat was NICE and JUICYNOT dry which is always a plus. There was a piece of lettuce on it. At least it was supposed to be lettuce but it was TOTALLY wilted so I just took it off! No biggy! The sandwich comes plain so you are free to add any condiments you like that you can grab at the condiment stand right behind the pickup counter. The bun was nice and soft and they didn’t toast or grill it which was fine by me! I got a NICE helping of OR’s and they also had tartar sauce which is a must when I’m eating OR’s! Ketchup just will NOT do! The OR’s were nice and crunchy and NOTOVERLY greasy ANOTHERPLUS! The last thing I need is a tummy ache on the plane 30,000 feet in the air NO escape route. And upchucking in the UBERTINY and ALWAYSDISGUSTING Smurf-sized closet BKA a bathroom is NOT an option for me! You can hardly breathe or turn around in there let alone needing to kneel and hurl! I’m sure you catch my drift! Over all I would eat there again. The food filled me up and was satisfying. I would probably try the red beans and rice. Being that I’m in the south they probably are pretty good and several airport staff members were ordering them! The price was ok. Not too bad for airport grub but of course you’re a captive audience so they pretty much have you by the short and curlies when/if you don’t have time to pick something up before you get there. How the airport gets away with price gouging is beyond me. A 16oz bottle of water should NOT cost $ 2.99. That is just ridiculous!

A very nice and accommodating bartender. She poured us a nice cold Stella and Blue Moon. A small bar but good enough for BTR.

Say goodbye to the faux-brewery restaurant bars of the metro-airports and say hello to the Bayou Bar here in good ol Baton Rouge Airport. It’s a divey joint, with nothing more to offer than a few stools, a couple of TVs, and cheap(for the airport) drinks. Suddenly getting trashed before getting on a flight never got easier. I don’t think they serve any food but it’s located right next to Burger Bistro( ) in Baton Rouge’s tiny little food court. I’ve slammed down a few brews here prior to a flight, I can only imagine what it’s like if a rowdier crowd(perhaps Tiger fans visiting from out of town) ever actually partied here. No worries about running out of alcohol though, it’s all on the side closet for all to see(see photos). Classy. Drinks aren’t at backbreaking prices. $ 5 – 6 a cocktail is about how much one would pay on a plane anyway. The beers are of Louisiana fabulousness(Abita on tap? Yes please) and the bartenders know how to make a mean drink. There is nothing glamorous about Bayou Bar, but until something better comes along, it’s the only place to get a drink.
