Sorry to say my highlights were horrible he turned my blonde hair orange! It wast my first visit to Alan and I had high hopes based on Unilocal reviews and turned out to be the worst highlight I have ever had! The salon was very dark so I am not sure how he could see the color before he rinsed. Keep looking.

I’m in my early 50s and have experienced many trendy, expensive salons over the years in the Bay Area and Portland, and had my best hair cut here. There are stylists who say they work well with curly hair but Alan is the real deal. I also felt like he took in account my personality — it’s not a soccer mom cut, it’s a bit off beat and sassy. Hubby thinks it’s the best cut I’ve had too. I saw another client in her 20s with sleek, perfectly straight hair — she looked amazing. It’s not a fancy place with a lot of bells and whistles, it’s a bit like walking into someone’s home, small well-loved pup included. The receptionist and Alan were late to my first-thing-in-the morning appointment, so I got coffee and came back in 10 and all was well. If you need salon glam and production, I understand it, but this isn’t for you. But if you’re looking for a truly boutique(customized, intimate) experience by a master, do it.

Alan is a true artist and super nice guy! After years of running downtown to big name salons, I’ve found the biggest talent right here in Beaverton. I am very picky and my curls look great. You will not be disappointed. PS his salon has always been clean, and I’m a bit OCD.

Alan is fantastic! I have a very short«boy» style cut and he does a great job :) He always takes his time and makes sure I’m happy. Highly recommend Alan and Schafer Studios!

I’ve been seeing Alan for almost 20 years and have followed him as he moved to different locations around Beaverton. Alan is the best. He’s an award wining colorist and just a cool laid back guy. His schedule is packed which will attest to his strong following. I’ve referred several friends to him and they all love him. His new location IMHO is the best — centrally located and lots of parking. If you look at the reviews it’s just 5 stars and 1 stars. As with all Unilocal it’s good to trim a couple reviews from the top and bottom to rule out haters and over the toppers. Which leaves you with… 5 stars. Check him out

In response I have only these things to say: A) I was there for a cut and color in February from approximately 4 to 8:30…check your records. B) I stated that the environment was gross due to the hair all over the floors, dust on the shelves, windowsills, decorations and the cobwebs on the ceiling/walls and corners. If that’s not gross to you than our opinions differ. C)Maybe I should have been less harsh and not said crap customer service, however it was how I perceived it especially since you(Alan) told me at least twice that you just didn’t feel like cutting hair today. I have no hate, just an opinion about my experience. I wanted to have a good experience, that wasn’t the case.

My life was transformed after a cut and color by Alan. I am now a loyal client and will be for life. Alan is talented, kind, flexible, affordable and I don’t have to wait months to get scheduled. I would encourage anyone to give this salon a try!

I just moved to Beaverton and have difficult naturally curly hair. I was very nervous to try somewhere new. It is not in an upscale salon but the service and skill was. Alan treated my hair cut like a work of art, was flexible, personable and talented. My new hair style is adorable and exactly what I asked for!

I got a groupon for waxing here and I almost canceled after reading reviews, but I was leaving for vacation and decided I’d rather try than not get waxed. The place isn’t fancy, but the wax was great. I actually thought it hurt less than many waxes I’ve gotten. She’s really nice and we had good conversation(which is important). Definitely was pleasantly surprised and wanted to write a review in case there were other scared groupon users.

DONOTGETWAXEDHERE! I got a Groupon to this place for a Brazilian wax and since the place seemed to have good reviews I thought it would be a safe place to choose. However, all the good reviews are for Alan, the salon owner who does hair. I was so disappointed with my wax and had a similar experience as Amanda R. who posted below. I have had Brazilians before and so I thought I would get one before I went on my vacation to Greece. I went in a few days before I was to leave thinking that this would give me adequate time to heal. The atmosphere was so-so. Just an old house converted into a salon. There was no receptionist so I waited a few minutes after I came in, awkwardly standing around. Finally someone came and told me that Mary(the esthetician) would be with me shortly. Several minutes later Mary came down and I followed her up these narrow creaky old stairs into the waxing room. I was surprised when she asked me if it was okay if she stayed in the room while I undressed. I said sure just because I am not that modest, but normally the person who waxes you leaves the room and lets you lay down on the table with the paper over you. So it was a little uncomfortable and not very professional if you ask me. So the waxing began and it was very painful! I don’t remember for sure, but I don’t think she wore gloves and I’m not sure if the wax was hot enough either but I didn’t say anything because she has had 25 years experience and acted really confident in what she was doing. She did wax the same areas multiple times and then she tweezed strays when she was done. I just assumed she was very thorough. I was very sore and very red for the next few days. I thought by the time I got to Greece that everything would be fine and I would be good to swim. Boy was I wrong! Almost a week later after being waxed I was still red and sore but it was my vacation and I wanted to swim. Soon after I got in the pool I had to get out because the chlorine stung my coochie so bad. I started looking in that area more carefully and I realized that patches of skin were missing. I guess she took skin when she waxed me and that was why it was so painful for so long and why the chlorine stung so bad. In other areas a lot of hair had already started growing back! This made me think that she didn’t get a lot of the hair follicles when she waxed but that the hairs just broke at the skin surface. Waxes are supposed to last at least a few weeks! The patches where the skin was missing became very itchy as well. It wasn’t until another week had passed that I could even attempt to swim again and by then I had to start shaving from all the hair that had grown back. It took a good three weeks before I healed completely. By then most of the hair had grown back and my vacation was over. Needless to say, I was very upset! Groupon did refund my money, though, but that still didn’t make up for ruining a good part of my vacation!

Totally not a good experience. I got a groupon for this place so I traveled all the way from Molalla to get a wax here since I thought it was a good deal. I walked in, no one greeted me~some hairdresser(?) saw me come in but did not welcome me. I stood around waiting for someone then I heard a man call down the lady that was to wax me. She seemed like she was busy with other things therefor making me feel awkward since she was about to see my goods! haha. As if this wasn’t a bad enough experience, the waxing was terribly painful. I have had bikini waxes before but this was so much more painful than ANYTHING I’ve had in the past. She did seem to go over the same spots more than once, which I thought was a big No-No. It was so painful I almost asked her to just stop but I didn’t want to be half-waxed for the money I spent. That was 2 days ago and I am still SO sore! The only good thing I can say is that she was thorough and didn’t miss anything! NOTGOINGBACKEVER!

I went to Schafer Studios for a Brazilian from Mary Simpson. She was professional, friendly and quick! It was much less painful than I expected. Her prices are also excellent. I recommend going to Mary for any of your waxing needs.

I can’t say enough about my experience with Schafer Studios. Alan Schafer is an amazing stylist. I consider Schafer Studios my salon therapy! :) Alan hands me a glass of wine, asks me what style I want and the magic begins. He brings out the best in all his clients and isn’t afraid to consult with you about your style choice and provide suggestions that will ensure you are more than happy with the results. The atmosphere of the studio is warm, modern and relaxing. There is ample parking and it’s very convenient to get to — located on Hall, just off Canyon(Behind the Bike Gallery).

How is it that no one on Unilocal has written a review of Schafer Studios? After moving from LA, I tried an overpriced salon in Lake Oswego that left me with brassy, horrible highlights, I looked like a skunk… for $ 140! That’s more than what I paid in Brentwood! I was commiserating about my hair tragedy with a colleague from work, who recommended her stylist, Alan Schafer. I made an appointment to see him right away to deal with my hair emergency. Alan was so easy to talk to and he really listened to what you wanted. At first, I was kind of put off because he talks to you in the reflection of his mirror, but after seeing the fabulous end result, I realized that he was using that time to really look at me and determine what would work best for my hair. The process did take a LONG time: I was there for about 3 hours for my hair intervention, but all the while, I was made to feel comfortable: offers of wine, soda, and when we got hungry, Alan even had his sister(who is the receptionist) go to Whole Foods to pick up sandwiches. I walked out of there looking and feeling great! And the best part? I only paid $ 75 for highlights and a hair cut! Shhh, don’t tell Alan, he could charge double and I’d gladly pay it!
