The Rose Garden is a bit of a mega-complex(I used that term mega-complex a bit sarcastically here, no its not big, but there is alot here). There is a party-room/restaurant(called the Viking Valhalla Restaurant), then in the next room there is a horseshoe shaped bar, and beyond the bar is the bowling alley, and through a door out of the bowling alley takes you to the volley ball courts. Everything is extremely dated, clean, but dated(think 70s to early 80s décor). OI course there are modern enhancements, such as flat screen TVs in the bar area, computerized scoring in the bowling alley… a not so modern enhancement is a dedicated smoking room off the bar area, complete with plastic outdoor chairs and a sink. it’s a bit disgusting, but people seemed to prefer it to going outside for a smoke in the cold. The patrons all seem to have 80s haircuts and early 90s dressing styles. And it’s not because these styles are making a comeback. I have been to the bar area a couple of times now and I went to bowl here on a recent Friday evening. After an arduous work week, my girlfriend asked if I wanted to go bowling later that night. Always up for something, she knew I couldn’t refuse. With a bit of sadness, the Rose Garden is our local watering hole, due to our proximity. Sadness, as the selection of the bar, in my mind deserves 1 star, but there are almost always good, friendly people here. Arriving around 8pm that night, there was a league bowling when we arrived, there were at least two lanes(of ten) open. We both rented shoes(~$ 3/pair), found balls that fit our hands, and commenced bowling almost immediately($ 3.50/person/game). After two games, we sauntered over to the bar area, and found two seats. We drank a few Genny Cream ales(~$ 3) and my girlfriend switched to wine, of which they only have small 10oz bottles(~$ 4). I then switched to jack&coke which were cheap, but not strong for $ 3.75. As I said previously, the bar’s beer is severely lacking any modern choices. The closest thing to a craft beer is Sam Adams, while all the other choices are the dated mega-beer companies like Bud, Coors, Michelob, and so on. They do have Genny Light on tap, and Genny Cream ale in bottles, so kudos for supporting the local mega-brew. I have not eaten here yet, but I have ordered french fries with cheese and gravy, which is not on the menu, but the kitchen seems happy to oblige. Twice, we have had a great time in the bar area; once, not so much. The key difference between the experiences was the number of people in the bar area, if there is a crowd, then it is always fun, if there are only a few people, the bar area can seem dead and depressing.
