We were looking at burl coffee tables for our new home and chanced on this place which happened to be in the neighborhood, ie, within 100 miles of home. We explained what we were looking for and Jim picked out a piece of curly redwood for us which worked perfectly. Jim is easy to work with and produced a table for us which we will enjoy for many, many years.

LOVE this place! We purchased a fireplace mantle, slab of 900‑1000 year-​old virgin redwood and made a coffee table and end table for my parents’ new home. Jim was wonderful to work with. He knows so much about the process of turning salvaged wood into pieces of art, and is so passionate about what he does, that it is a joy just to listen to and learn from him.
Our pieces took slightly longer to make than expected, but hey, it’s SO worth the wait. The tables are unique and beautifully made. The craftsmanship is impeccable. We’ll treasure these for many years to come.

Furniture is usually planked, squared, and pretty far removed from nature. But burlwood reflects the ruggedness of California’s sequoia sempervirens. The furniture here is less tame, letting you bring a bit of the outdoors inside and appreciate the source of things. The carpenters are friendly and helpful. They have some things you can purchase then-​and-​there, but most things are custom and will take some time.

Artisan Burlwood specializes in redwood and burl tables. If you’ve ever walked into a restaurant or a coffee house in the Bay Area and wondered who made the enormous, raw wood countertop, chances are it was Artisan. They made a 10′ long, 52″ wide, raw, redwood dining room table for me.
The wood is salvage – no trees are destroyed in the process. At Artisan, you choose the piece of wood that will become your table! So, some abstract thought and patience is needed. This isn’t shopping at pottery barn. You have to envision what you’d like your table to look like, and they’ll do it in a 2 – 3 week turnaround. The prices are about 1⁄3 of what you’d pay in a east coast gallery for such a table.
