I went to Social Studies last week specifically for an organic makeup line that they carry, RMS. Upon my arrival with my cousin the store owner(i forget her name) was busy with a customer and didn’t offer much assistance. We saw the makeup and were immediately disappointed that the line didnt seem to have any shades for people of color(not the store’s fault. although if they are looking to market/sell to POC, thats a huge turnoff) We asked if we could try the foundation and were told yes, but there was nothing that we could use to apply it with. The store owner also said that we could try on the mascara, but offered us no additional mascara brushes aside from the already used and dried up one on display, GROSS! After I asked if it was clean she proceeded to tell me «I wouldn’t use it because I’m a germaphobe.» That seemed odd to me, to recommend something to a customer that you certainly wouldn’t do. If you care that much about germs,(which, actually I do too! Thats why I asked) why wouldn’t you stock the proper amenities so that your customers may have a sanitary experience? As a business owner, I would’ve made the effort to have proper tools so that my customers could sample the cosmetics, especially if the makeup you are selling is super expensive. We ended up trying the foundation with our fingers, Berkeley was a long drive and we didn’t want to have to drive back. All the while we were being uncomfortably watched by one of the employees, I thought only I had noticed it but after asking my cousin she said she had felt extremely uncomfortable as well. Before ringing up my order the owner asked if i had«seen one of the bronzers,» I responded by telling her«No, we only tried the foundation.» She looked at me for a while longer, which made me want to cry. I felt like I was being targeted and she believed we would pocket merchandise. I ended up purchasing one of the foundations and powders, only because I have been searching for this line for a while. I also wanted a gift certificate for a friend. I had to ask her three separate times if she«had gift certificates,» if I could«get a gift certificate,» and finally«how could i purchase a gift certificate?» The first two times she answered me with a «no» and then«we dont have any.» After my persistent attempts she finally said that she could mail it out later on. WHYDID I HAVETOASKSOMANYTIMESFORHERTOTAKEMYMONEY? Unbelievable. I can not believe how I was treated at this place and even though I love high-end cosmetics and cute clothes, I will not return.

I just love this little store! Lauren and her team create a really nice, well considered environment to shop or browse in. The men’s store is great too, and I know they are develop their line of skin care products, all of which smell really good. I am about to head over to pick something out as gift for a family member!

Wonderful, friendly, airy and bright design, and they carry an amazing curation. I want that Shaina Mote dress. Maybe if it ever goes on sale, or if I’m ever in Berkeley again.

I have been meaning to write my review for awhile BUT how do you write a review when words can’t express the splendor that is Social Studies?! The design aesthetic in every detail from the front door handle down to the smallest item on the shelf, everything has so much love and thought put into it, what is not to love! The owner, Lauren is almost always there otherwise it is her assistant Sara(who is an absolute sweetheart) they never fail to answer all my style questions or making me feel so welcome. There is even a bowl of water and treats for furry friends, little Georgie loves it!(my 5yr old Boston terrier). My first experience at Social Studies was when I was in Berkeley visiting friends before I moved here. I and had an event later that evening and needed to find something suitable to wear, already feeling frumpy, bloated, and not to cute from having been jet lagged from a previous work trip(not in any mood to shop or try anything on). I went in there because it was close to wear my friend was living. I explained to the owner my dilemma she was so sweet and attentive first thing she said was«sit down and relax» her husband happened to be in the store and was about to make a coffee run she had him pick me up a cup of tea! I sat there sipping my tea as she presented me with different options(I felt as if I was shopping with a friend/personal stylist) She put together the most incredible outfit for me that night which was both comfortable and most importantly made me feel amazing! She even gave me a few tips on how to style my hair and makeup. I went into Social Studies dreading having to get ready for that event, to leaving there feeling CUTE and EXCITED to go out in my new outfit! I received nothing but complements from everyone on how amazing I looked that night(LoL if only they new the transformation that had just taken place). I felt like Cinderella and I couldn’t have done it without the help of Lauren and her amazing store. Serendipity led me to Socials Studies that day and the wonderfully friendly vibes, unrivaled customer service, and STYLE will keep me going back. Thank you for bringing this much needed boutique to Berkeley and saving me a trip into the city. Thrilled to have a place like this to shop!

what i’ve seen through the windows looks interesting, and well chosen, and it’s right down the street from my house. however, both times i’ve stopped by(during business hours, mind you), the store was locked with a sign posted«coffee break… back in 15 minutes.» three strikes and you’re out!

This shop has some interesting items but the sales associate completely ignored my presence and as the only person in this new, interestingly placed store, that just won’t work. I would have purchased something had I not been received so coldly.

This is a cute, cool, beautiful store filled with women’s clothing and accessories, personal care and home goods. They have Levi’s Made & Crafted, LVC for women, jeans, t-shirts, vintage clothing, beautiful bags. I’m really happy a place like this opened in the East Bay. It’s much needed. Wear quality ladies!
