Dr. Barnes performed emergency surgery on my mother. The surgery went well, but his after care is atrocious. Seeing my Mom in ICU for the first time, he said, «How could you let this happen to yourself?» Now, that might be a conversation you’d want to have with an elderly patient after surgery, but not when they’re still intubated, and confused about why they’re even in the hospital, and ICU. My first interaction with Dr. Barnes he was doing his once a day rounds, and asked inquired of the ICU nurse if an order had been followed. She said the team had come to do the procedure, but the order was written for the next day. He said, «Now I’m going to be Dr. Jerk and say get them back down here.» He had written the wrong date on the order, but he was giving the ICU nurse a hard time for it not being completed. Dr. Jerk was how we referred to him thereafter. It fit. After that interaction, I asked for a prognosis for my mother’s recovery. He asked if I had gone to medical school. I said, «No.» He told me he didn’t get paid to educate me on the medical procedures and conditions that knowledge of would be necessary for me to understand my mother’s medical condition. This statement is a blatant violation of the Patients Bill of Rights. He said all of this in front of the ICU nurse. She later told me, I was absolutely right. The hospital was telling me that my mother would need to go to a rehab facility, I was trying to ascertain how long I had to find one, arrange for her to enter, and get everything ready. Dr. Barnes wouldn’t talk to me about her condition because I hadn’t attended medical school. He first had asked me it I was a lawyer or a doctor. Once I said no, I believe he felt he could treat me poorly, that I wouldn’t understand what his responsibilities were to his patients. After this interaction, I contacted my husband(a cancer researcher), a friend(a chief of surgery at a major medical center. whose reply to what Dr. Barnes had done: «What an ass. Contact his chief!) and the hospital’s administration. I advised my mom’s nurse that she wanted him removed from her case. She was afraid of him. The hospital administration was very concerned with the statements made by Dr. Barnes. I gave them my side of the story, and told them to verify it with the ICU nurse. It didn’t seem like this was the first time they had heard complaints about him. Later in my mom’s hospital stay, Dr. Barnes met my sister in the elevator and told her that I had gotten him written up all over the hospital, and that my mother would be his last patient at the hospital. Clearly, what he did wasn’t right, or he wouldn’t have been written up all over the hospital and exiting the hospital. He continued his horrible habits during follow up care. My mom had a nurse come to the house to change her wound vac 3 times a week, and on the day she was to see Dr. Barnes, the nurse didn’t come telling my mom Dr. Barnes would change it as part of the visit. My mom went to see him, he had her raise her shirt, he looked, and told her she could go. She told him about what the nurse had said regarding the wound vac, and he replied, «Why would I do that?» And he didn’t provide his medically required service he, himself, had ordered. Dr. Barnes is the worst doctor I have ever encountered. He was quite fitting of the name he gave himself, Dr. Jerk.

After having a ultrasound done at Desert imaging I found that I needed to have a fibroadenoma removed. After some issues with another surgeon being out I was left without a surgeon & a surgery date two days before my surgery. I called Dr Barnes office and they got me right in the next day for a consult! dr Barnes real life approach to medicine is refreshing, he talks to you on a level that makes you feel confident and educated on all of the risks and possible complications. For the surgery at DRMC, Dr Barnes staff and himself got me in surgery promptly. I felt so comfortable as this was my first surgery ever I was very nervous. Not only was the surgery quick but I woke up and he already had my biopsy results from the lab in hand!!! He came to talk to me after surgery. He informed me that the incision was a little larger than he would’ve liked and told me don’t worry it will look smaller I was a little nervous but now four weeks post surgery I am very happy with the scar it’s very minimal and my recovery was very easy and quick. I’ve already recommended to patients to this practice he is amazing.
