Food quality is awesome. I had wagyu Shabu-Shabu, it’s the best shabu I’ve ever had. The wagyu meat is outstanding. I highly recommend this dish. Would definitely come back and perhaps try the wagyu steak. There’s room for improvement on Service pace

Came here after driving by the restaurant multiple times and finding out they serve Shabu-Shabu, one of my favorites. Wow I was not disappointed! Everything was impeccable from the service to the food to the ambiance. They have a Japanese A5 Wagyu shabu shabu, and I don’t think I’ve ever had something quite like it! If you come here it is definitely worth spending the money for it! The pricing is at a higher level but you definitely get what you pay for. Had the tempura and that was also divine, although I preferred the crab tempura over the shrimp. They brought a complementary desert as well which was a nice touch. The staff is super friendly, I am guessing sushi is pretty popular here judging by the other reviews I was reading on Unilocal. The restaurant was super quiet when I came which usually makes me question the food quality but I am glad this restaurant proved me wrong. I learned that this restaurant is still going through a soft opening stage. They’ve apparently been in this stage for a year and a half. The owner is a big seafood importer and wants everything to be perfect before having the general public learn about the restaurant though advertisements according to the staff. Guessing since the owner is a seafood importer that the fish is excellent, but I was not able to try it during this dinner. The meat was next level and I HIGHLY recommend the shabu shabu! I will be back!

This place is a hidden gem on la cienaga blvd. The Valet parking is free. I tried many restaurants on the street, Benihana, Lawrys, Gyukaku, matsuhisa, stinking rose… and by far this place became my favorite. First of all, I didn’t know this place existed until today and I’m so glad I found out! I got the sushi sampler, combination of tempuras, black bean noodles, and the Rib Eye Wagyu Steak. Every single plate was amazing. Especially the steak melted in my mouth. The service was really good and the foods were all prepared with very fresh and good quality ingredients. I would recommend this place for family gatherings, dates, and a big group events! I’ll be coming back to this place.

Took my bestie here for her birthday. I reserved two spots for omakase dinner in front of the chef … I guess the day I went t was a new sushi chef and he was super nervous. Few things I suggest not having is their tempura… I think it was fillers since we came with a big appetite. It came out very soggie. Coming out from riverside for soggy tempura was not something I expected to eat at a restaurant in Beverly Hills. Other than that the beginning was good we got all the different areas of tuna. It was till the end he started giving us all the delicious sashimi but we were already full… Lastly, at the end I thought since I brought my best friend to celebrate her birthday and I came from riverside… You would think we would get a little birthday surprise or even mochi ice cream or something … We got a small cup of assorted fruit(5pieces or so) did not expect that for such«fine» dining sushi house. Kinda made me feel all the reviews were overly rated and too hyped up for what it really is. It was fantasticooo as I remembered few years back. The food was still tasty and fresh . The overall service was great though, sushi chef was awesome he made our dinner entertaining. Would I come back? Not from riverside … Or for a birthday… Or if ur going bring your own cake ! Lol Well… I know for sure if u spend over 300 you’ll get something sweet at the other local fine dining at that area.

Don’t really recommend this place. Thought about coming because of decoration and you can BYOB with a corkage fee. We had a really nice bottle of sake, so thought it would be a great place to open. *REGRETS* Other than that, the food is not good enough, I would say. maybe VERYAVERAGE. Sushi are not very fresh. The shabu shabu is not bad… but I feel like it’s very hard to get a shabu shabu tasting bad. Service good. Not very crowded. Overall experience was is blah. Later we walked over to SLS for a drink.

I came here last Saturday with a couple of friends. We first called another sushi restaurant on the same St but the guy that answered the phone made it sound very very booshie, so that place was X’d out. So we call Shan Social House. It was about 830pm and as we arrive we were like wow, this place is amazing and huge. We almost took the wrong door because the koi pond was like from Japan, it was that nice. As the host approaches us with such professionalism he seats us, at first he asked if he can seat us at a table, but we request the sushi bar and he approves. It wasn’t actually the sushi bar, it was another live chef bar area were they make other dishes like, yakatori, noodles, and other delicates. Jay was the chef and he was so nice and cool, as I watched how thin he slices the avocado, I’m like okay these guys have pride in their cuts. We end up buying a saki bottle for $ 100 and it was well worth it, sushi was perfect, uni, live sweet shrimp was no complaints, it was not frozen because he showed me before they deep fried the head yum. As the night progresses he ends up hooking us up with a couple of small dishes on the house! Wow I’m sold and we’ll definitely come back!

Great atmosphere! We had the chef’s tasting menu with a total of 9 dishes + 1 dessert. The menu is more like a Chinese Japanese fusion. $ 138/person. Everyone from the group is required to order the tasting menu if that’s what you want. Wagyu beef dishes were definitely the highlights of their menu! The rest of the dishes were also pretty good, but in my opinion, not too different/unique compare to other regular asian restaurants. Service was great! Our waiter was bilingual in Chinese and Korean, he was very courteous and friendly throughout. I think this place is a great location for dates(because the decoration is super romantic), or social events with big groups. Overall my experience was good, but I think there is definitely room for improvement on some of the dishes.

I don’t normally write reviews on Unilocal(although I use Unilocal all the time to get restaurant ideas) and I actually didn’t think Shan’s merits only 1 star(it probably really deserves 2 or 3 stars) but I definitely think the reviews on here for this restaurant are misleading which is what motivated me to write a review. The garden leading up to the restaurant is nice but the interior décor is underwhelming. When we arrived, we asked the valet to take our picture in the garden but he refused because he said he was busy and suggested we ask our waiter to take our picture. However it was clear that he was not busy when we asked. This should have been my first hint that the customer service was going to be subpar. We had made a reservation but when we showed up there wasn’t a host so we walked around aimlessly trying to figure out what was going on. Eventually the only waiter on duty told us to sit down at the closest table. The restaurant was empty with only three other tables dining when we arrived. Even despite how empty the restaurant was our service was slow and the waiter didn’t refill our waters promptly. The food is ok/slightly below average but its overpriced and we paid $ 90 including tip for the sushi sampler, beef fried rice and lobster with chili sauce. With so many other options nearby I would recommend passing on this venue.

My wife and son and I had dinner at Shan Social House Japanese & Modern Chinese Cuisine tonight, and Unilocal readers need to know that this is an outstanding Japanese Restaurant. It offers both outstanding food and outstanding service in a great Japanese ambiance. We began our meal with an order of Mixed Tempura as a shared appetizer, followed by a Sashimi Sampler and Sushi Sampler(which came with a dinner salad and miso soup) and a Bowl of Black Bean Noodles as our main course, which we shared. This was followed by mango pudding for dessert. The food and Japanese ambiance of this restaurant is outstanding. Our servers, Mr. Guofen, and Ms. Tsuzumi were very attentive and accommodating. We’ve eaten at lots of Japanese restaurants, and Shan Social House is a five star experience in our view.

I came here for the first time with a large group for my cousin’s birthday celebration. Our experience was fantastic! I loved the atmosphere of the traditional Japanese restaurant. Our waiter told us that the interior and décor were all handmade, and the design was very impressive. It’s almost like you’re transported to Japan! The service was amazing, especially with our big group. Our waiter was very attentive in explaining some of the items on the menu. Our group shared several appetizers including edamame, crab sunomono, and lobster with chili sauce. I also had a sea eel sushi. For our main dishes, I had the black cod, and our group shared the seafood noodles. All of it was so delicious and fresh. The chef really hit it out of the park with all the food. The prices actually weren’t that high, with the exception of some of the special premium meat dishes. I had an amazing experience at Shan Social House, and I can’t wait to go back with my friends! Days later, I’m still thinking about my time there! If I could give it 10 stars, I would!

Like most people here have raved about. the wagyu beef just melts in your mouth. An absolute must try for those who’ve never had the chance to delight in it before. If you order the fried lobster tails, other than the deliciousness, it comes with a beautifully cut carrot. I know that sounds weird, but it is carved like a fantastic work of art and it is so pleasant to the eyes. The sushi/sashimi/tempura were all delicious as well and the tuna belly sashimi just dissolves in the mouth! All the food we received were unquestionably delicious! Not to forget to mention the ambience of the place. As soon as you walk in it feels like you’ve entered a small Japanese botanical garden that is outright amazing & the interior is quite fantastic as well. A hidden gem! That’s for sure. P. s.- it is quite vacant but thats because they haven’t had their grand opening yet :/

This place is so lovely! The staff is super friendly and attentive & the food is delicious. I ordered the Japanese Braised Kakuni(pork belly). It came with a great house salad & miso soup. They were honest about the portions and didn’t try to up sell me on more dishes. I would have loved to try more dishes but I was so full! I’ll have to go back soon. I was also super impressed by the creativity of table options, booths, tables, outdoor by the coy pond, upstairs seated on the floor in tradition style… They did a great job on the layout. My friend ordered the black cod, I tried a bite it was just rich enough and like eating butter(in the best way possible!) she also had a seaweed salad which came with 5 types of seaweed. I can’t wait to come back with more people and try the shabu shabu!

Wow. Wow. Wow. Prepare to be blown away, this place is an explosion of flavors and all things wonderful. I don’t consider myself a foodie(For the record) But, can I say wow was this some amazing food? Good ambiance? Service topline? Omg it was beyond that. The place hasn’t had their grand opening so it’s still very quiet but we enjoyed it and made our experience more intimate. We also got to engage with the staff more. Wagyu A-5; melts in your mouth, savor the moment seriously before you take that bite brace yourself! I’m sitting here writing this and I want to run back for more. We had the following items and if it wasn’t just my bf and I we would have ordered more! –Edamame(not your typical soy bean these were special and sweet with a hint of corn taste) –Beef carpaccio(I never eat raw meat but this I tried and I will be back for more, the meat was tender the flavors were delightful and just overall amazing, the garlic crisps and sauce had such good flavor you almost don’t want to chew because it tastes so good) –Wagyu and sausage AMAZING. I CANNOTWAITTOCOMEBACKANDHAVETHEFILET! Tender, cooked to perfection, seasoning right on point. –Wagyu shabu shabu so delicious — they pair it with two sauces for dipping and both very tasty. The stew and veggies were so delicious but the Wagyu again blows everything else out of the water. This came with small appetizers one of which was sea urchin this was also my first time trying it and I do not regret it one bit, I would definitely have it again here! Yutaka took such good care of us, he recommended everything we tried including the sake(premium top shelf stuff, haven’t seen it anywhere else) he’s incredibly hospitable I felt like royalty! They know how to treat their customers with the utmost respect and kindness. 10 stars for the service if I could give them. Thank you Yutaka for making the experience here so much better!

Cute Japanese garden in the front! They actually haven’t had their grand opening yet so the place was pretty empty on a Friday night which was even better for a date night :) For 2 people, we ordered following: 1. Chef’s 3 choice starter 2. Premium Wagyu shabu & seafood 3. Lobster with chili sauce 4. black bean noodle Chef also brought out a dim sum sampler and tempura which was pretty yummy. Wagyu beef was an excellent quality and spinach noodle was interesting. Personally didn’t really like it. I’d prefer regular udon noodle. The highlight of the night was lobster chili which was HEAVENLY. I would totally go back for that lobster tempura and the sauce. One thing is that if they had more variety in their vegetable plate, it would’ve been a 5 star meal. I expected a bit more from a $ 128 plate. Overall, our dinner was delicious. I would definitely recommend this place to all the Shabu lovers!

Thank you Julius, Dow-An, and Yutaka for making 12−13−14 such a special memorable moment for us. I decided to propose to my long term girlfriend at Shan Social House because of the amazing Japanese garden, koi fish pond, and cherry blossom trees. The proposal was magical and the lighting during the day in the courtyard provided ample and specular photographs. Immediately after the engagement, we hosted a prix fixe menu luncheon that was fit for foodies and kings. The menu consisted of the following: 1. Crab sunomono salad(Cucumber, wakame seaweed, and real crab meat w/sweet vinegar dressing 2. Momotaro tomato soup(Japanese tomato soup) 3. Sashimi sampler 4. Tenpura assortment 5. 3 oz Wagyu Kobe steak(this was rated A-5 and is absolutely amazing. The flavor and tenderness was unbelievable) 6. Fried rice/Black bean noodle 7. Dessert We were also treated with a chef’s special, dim sum sampler, and sliced wagyu Kobe beef filet. The food from the kitchen was heavenly and magical. Everyone consumed the food so fast and commented on how delicious and how wonderful each item tasted. Our guests/friends/family all raved about the venue and will definitely come back on their own to try the other menu items, especially the Shabu Shabu. Shan was highlighted in my proposal that was chronicled in the OC Register: ?

Super cute restaurant! Very traditional Japanese style w/koi pond and mini garden! Came here on Monday night and it was super peaceful! Ordered the shabu shabu dinner for two with beef and seafood(no wagyu). The seafood was big in portion and extremely fresh! Shrimp head was still moving! The staff was extremely friendly and we received 4 pieces of complementary wagyu beef! It’s definitely pricy here! But definitely worth a try!

It’s very surprising to walk into the front. It’s has beautiful landscaping and décor. It’s a lot larger inside than you’d think, yet it’s still very cozy with the unique layout. We received amazing service from every one there. The black cod is perfection. I can’t wait to return. I’m going to add more to this review. There’s a separate bar area, away from the restaurant. They are going to great place for small and larger parties. I’m glad I was able to experience Shan before they do their grand opening and it becomes to crowded.

This place is my new favorite upscale shabu shabu place. The décor is very traditional Japanese zen garden in the front entrance of the restaurant. Makes a great impression if you are trying to impress guests. The interior has a mixed array of dinning tables. Booths and tables and private rooms. Also there is a bar area with the most delicious mixed cocktails ever. All from fresh ingredients. Nothing from concentrate or no syrups. Appetizers are always different and always delicious. The A5 wagyu is flown in fresh from Japan. This is the real deal! Marbling on the wagyu is like butter. The regular angus beef shabu is pretty good as well. Service is professional and friendly. I hear the sushi is super delicious as well. We must come back to try omakase at the sushi bar. Best meal I have had in a while. We must come back.

OK, so I guess I have to be the one to break the news. So, I was staying at the SLS and Shan Social House came up with GREAT reviews via Unilocal.5 stars? SAYWHAT??? So for any committed Unilocaler it was a no brainer. We walked the very short distance to the restaurant, cool beans. :AMBIANCE: The ambiance and décor alone is 5 star worthy. From the moment you walk in you are submerged in a mythical Asian destination. I say Asian because I’m not sure exactly which culture it is. From the old Japanese owners to the new Chinese owners, it’s Asian. A wonderful garden flanked by a bar to the right and a sushi bar to the left. The main dining house is straight ahead. I thought any minute a King Fu fight was going to break out. The not so good, we were one of two couples in the joint. It was empty… Like your wallet will be. :SERVICE: Good! :FOOD: EH! It was OK, just OK. Wayyyyyyyy too expensive. $ 58 per person for Shabu Shabu? What in God’s green planet? And it wasn’t that good. It was, ok. I’ve had better and cheaper. Honestly for the prices they charge that food better make me want to slap my mama. I gave her a church hug instead. They really need to do a better job of promotion and Cooking. I wouldn’t come back with the prices they charge for food. Maybe for a drink just to see the architecture. And that’s a big if. I just want impressed or satisfied.
