No wait seating. Order taken promptly. Cheeseburger and Onion Rings were quite good. French Fries a little overdone. Overall this is a step up from typical fast food chains but not quite to the level of Burger specialty restaurants. Décor is reminiscent of an old fashioned soda shop. Table service was very attentive but not bothersome. I will likely return.

Meh is exactly correct, Unilocal.Thank you for that. Alright, fine — the pimento cheese sandwich wasn’t bad. Kitchen seemed kinda slow for lunch time. People have to get in and OUT! The main reason for my review were the onion rings. The sad, sad«onion rings.» Some were almost burnt, some were raw-ish, but the real kicker was that SOME weren’t actually rings ATALL! They were battered and fried onion thirds.(As in, 3 – 5 rings that hadn’t been separated and were still all smooshed together.) Bleh. They had potential if someone had done just the tiniest amount of quality control. Summary: Not bad. Better than McDonald’s. Don’t get the onion rings.

5 stars for friendly service and super yummy custard. Try their strawberry cheesecake custard if it’s available, it will leave you wanting more. We got a pint to go but ended up eating the whole thing in the car on the way home!

The staff is friendly and the establishment is clean with a cute 50’s theme. The food is fairly basic but it is cooked well.

To begin my search of best burger in Birmingham, I checked out Hwy 55… after I saw there was no way I was getting in Johnny Rockets for the night. I was very surprised and pleased with Hwy 55. The décor is all 50s stuff, but it seemed like it needed 50s music blaring and I can’t recall hearing any. But I did not come for the atmosphere, but for the food. The burgers are fresh-made patties… NOTFROZEN! That’s a great start! You have the choice of making your own or picking one of their special burgers. You also have to pick the size. I went with a special called the BBQ bacon burger that also came with mustard, cheese, chili, onion ring and John Boy and Billy sauce on it. The John Boy and Billy sauce is a tangy BBQ sauce. This burger was pretty overwhelming with all the toppings, but I enjoyed every single moment of it! The fries were pretty good but you have to order them a la carte. The best part of Hwy 55 was their homemade custard that comes in vanilla and flavor of the day. Today’s flavor was smores. The waitress gave me a sample of smores and I chose to make it a milkshake. You are allowed one topping to add to your milkshake. The milkshake itself is reason enough to stop in. Hwy 55 was a great start to finding the best burger in Birmingham. It probably won’t be the best burger but for the value, taste, choices, and custard, it will be one of my staples.

Food was bland and pretty flavorless– somehow the fries were dry? Had to add salt to everything. They got our order wrong, my burger had the wrong toppings. The custard is pretty good, though.

The last three times I have been in for lunch the service has been terrible. The last time I waited for 10 minutes for a drink order and there were empty tables. The food seems to have gone down in quality since they opened. I will not be back.

The food here is cheap, and the quality is better than you expect. My friend and I ordered with doorstep. The fries are a bit limp and soggy, but the burgers, grilled cheese, and chicken sandwich were great for the price! They even cut the sandwich into triangles. Our Dr. Pepper got lost along the way, but I still want to give Hwy 55 a 3 out of 5 stars. I can see myself ordering from here again when I think of getting fast food, because this is a better option. If you’re looking for a bit above fast food quality, for the fast food price, come here!

Not very good. The server was nice, and the restaurant was clean. That is all the positive I have to say. I ordered the jalapeño cheese steak and onion rings. The onion rings were way, way under cooked. Most of the batter was still white, none of them the appropriate golden brown color onion rings should be. I also thought the cheese steak atrocious. I’d have expected some diced fresh jalapenos sauteed with the mushrooms and onions. What it was were pickled jalapeño rings added on the top after the fact. Over all, very disappointing food.

Fries were good and the shake was too, but the dining experience was eclipsed by an overpowering«clean» smell. Kind of a bleach odor plus some other cleaner and it was terrible. OK overall, but not enough to get me back.

The décor of this restaurant is great, and the staff is friendly, but the food just didn’t measure up and is not as good as Steak N Shake or Johnny Rockets, and especially not as good as Five Guys. My husband got a Philly Cheesesteak and has been sick all day. The fries were cold, hard, and flavorless. All three of us commented on how much pepper was used in each different dish. The shakes are very good, though, and I’m sure the other desserts are also better than the food. I doubt we will make a trip back here. It’s just not worth it.

In a crowded burger market, Highway 55 is very good and worth your time. Great selection of topping, nicely seasoned meat and great service. The house made frozen custard is a nice addition. Highway 55 is a great addition to Green Springs and Homewood.

Picked up a to-go order today, the appearance of the 50’s, retro-inclined restaurant is rather welcoming with the hues of pink and blue. The management during this later time of night seemed rather distracted. However, the wait time was acceptable and my order was satisfactory. The server, upon ringing out my order, haphazardly placed my card on the table while she walked away. The courtesy I afford to others when I hand them items was not reciprocated, however, she did give me a halfhearted smile upon my departure. Hopefully, management can be a bit more welcoming, even in the later business days.

Fifties type of atmosphere. We waited 12 minutes for a drink order. Lots of standing around the waitresses here are definitely not in a hurry. I ordered the pimento cheese burger my husband just ordered an Andy size burger. 18 min after we placed our order we received the food. I ordered a pimento cheese burger with onion rings and my husband, the Andy sized burger. The pimento hamburger patty is half the size of a regular bun at best. Unfortunately it was way over cooked. The pimento cheese was good but only like a tablespoon of it on the burger. My husband had an Andy size it was about the size of the bun and not over cooked. The onion rings were awesome but unfortunately cold.
