Wine bar with tapas. Wine and beer flatbreads salads a few burgers. Trending funky fun signage. Also a deli. Bakery. And limited grocery for quick pick up items to go. Good coffee bar too. Try the handmade breads with some of the deli meats and salads for a summer picnic stop.

This is my new favorite meat and three. The tilapia was seasoned and cooked perfectly. The vegetables were also seasoned as they should be, actually significantly above what you might expect, savory and distinct, not with a bunch of sugar thrown in like some other southern style restaurants. I couldn’t put my finger on it but there seems to be a subtle Greek undertone to this home style food that will nevertheless bring comfort and joy to anyone longing for southern soul. The entire staff is super friendly. The waitress was super nice, and at check out, when I told the man who appeared to be Ted that this was my mother and my first time there and how much we loved it, he gave her a cookie! I travel to downtown Birmingham only once in a while, and from now on when I’m there for lunch, Ted’s is now firmly on my short list. Bravo!

Walked in for my first visit to Teds and immediately fell in love with the aroma and presentation of the food. Cafeteria style which gives a good look at what you are selecting. Favorite son and wifey went with the country fried steak and white gravy. Excellent selection. When I saw the greek baked chicken I got weak in my knees. When I got a peek at meat juices I started reminiscing of an old Greek restaurant(Constantines) in Mobile. The baked chicken was a must with a side dish of meat juice. To get the full flavor you must dip the meat in the juices. Ahh heavenly!!! Two peach cobblers and one coconut cream pie for dessert. Teds is on my list for a repeat visit when in the ham. Must go on a Thursday when they have pastitsio.

We walked in a few minutes past 9:30, when they stop serving breakfast, and the cook gave the wink-nod that he would still hook us up. Whew! This confirmed what others said on here– that this is a place with heart. The food was delicious: vegetarian hubby got a greek omelette that he really enjoyed, and my grits and eggs were good. I mean, breakfast isn’t too complicated, but the portions were just right, the service friendly without being over the top, and the atmosphere cozy for the a.m. hours. Wish we lived closer because we’d be coming back more regularly.

They know what they’re doing in here, and serving it up with a smile southern style. Try the pastitsio for a real treat, but everything is prepared well and priced right. The lunch is cafeteria style, but they are not yelling and rushing you through the line, and there are not a million options. The cornbread is not hot and fresh, but maybe that’s asking too much. Old standard for our family for business lunches.

Perfectly pretension free, Ted’s is on point for exactly what it’s supposed to be: Classic southern style food and charm in a straight-forward no nonsense hasn’t been updated in 30 years kinda place. Patrons banter passionately about local football with the chefs in the open-ish kitchen. Food comes quickly and with a smile. Delicious grits and cheap prices. Perfection. A great morning stop on our way south from Birmingham to play golf on the RTJ Trail.

This was my first time stopping by teds and I got exactly what I expected. I love the feel of that old time local southern food and they delivered. With the cafeteria style service to really get the feel that you along with the rest of the patrons are right at home. I’ve been to some meat and threes where I feel like a car on an assembly line but here the service was amazing people were nice and chatty. The food as well was southern as it comes and looked amazing. The only problem I truly had with the meal was that the food was warm but not really hot hot. While the food was mild in temperature the flavor was really good and the feel was amazing

Breakfast with Shirley and Barbara waiting on you, down home cooking becomes homemade. There’s a positive atmosphere that makes the dishes that much sweeter. The lunch is a meat and three or whatever you want. This is quintessential southern cooking. This will fill your gizzard and make it happy. I have not had a bad meal here. And with great folks, this is a must-try place.

Lunch here is consistently good. I like the baked chicken, but a plain old vegetable plate is my go-to. Greens are not over cooked, mashed potatoes have the skins in them, the rolls are perfect, and my husband likes the cornbread. You won’t find a million options like some other meat-and-threes nearby, but you can always find something good. Oh, and the okra is excellent. They don’t let it set in its own grease so it stays nice and crisp. The people who work here are friendly, and even though the line is long, it moves quickly.

Ted’s is a solid meat and three. The choices aren’t abundant, but all options are done very well. If you are looking for a delicious balanced lunch, Baked chicken, fried fish, okra, black eyed peas, and mashed potatoes, then Ted’s is a great spot to stop by.

I am judging the food at TEDS within the expectations for a meat-and-three. The service is fast and friendly. The food is consistent – I enjoy the friend pork chops, any of the greens, and lima beans. This is the taste of «homemade» in that, had you the time, you could indeed make it at home. But you don’t. I feel relaxed in the 70s booths and among the regulars. I come here when I don’t want to be among the hipness. It’s not great for healthy choices. It is filling.

We recently had Ted’s cater our son’s rehearsal dinner. The night was an elegant affair and we received rave reviews on the menu, especially the banana pudding, from our 100+ guests from all over the country. We served chicken and steak with a selection of southern veggies including his fantastic squash casserole. What was really special was the personal attention that Tasos, the owner, paid to us in preparing for the event, during the event, and even with his follow-up call after the event. The evening could not have been more special and Ted’s was a major part of the celebration. I can’t wait to get back to town to visit the restaurant itself once again!

Lunch yesterday was NOT a great experience… I am certainly a big fan of Meat &3 places and was excited about having lunch at Ted’s. The place has a typical comfy feel to it with the steam table, cafeteria style serving station right by the door. There were several good looking options available so I just might have chosen the 1 bad dish there. My entrée was scorched and tasted scorched… The veggies were fine(not great, not bad, just ok)…several times the servers came near and looked at my drink glass to see if it needed refilling. None of them asked if my food was ok, or why I was not eating the entrée… At the check out, Ted, the owner did ask if all was good. When I told him that this was my first time in and that the food was scorched, he said«I wish you had said something about it» when I said that if anyone had asked then I would have mentioned it. But, no one asked. This is where things got dicey and uncomfortable for me. The owner called my server over and proceeded to confront and correct her right in front of me. It was an awkward moment for me. In all candor I will likely give it another shot if I happen to be in the area, but I will not make any special effort to return.

If anything could be better than the food, it’s the people. Beba and Tasos took over the 40 year Birmingham landmark in 2000 and have been carrying on Mr. Ted’s legacy of a community built around good food. Southern style food with a Greek flare. Check the website to see what is on tap each day. Remember you can order ahead online. Waitresses are all sweet folks too. Ted’s for lunch any day. Perfect location for UAB crowd.

I visited Ted’s for the first time last week and enjoyed it very much. The service was quick and friendly. I had the greek shrimp, roasted sweet potatoes and green beans. The sweet potatoes had a nice crispy outside and were very yummy. The shrimp was not overcooked and seasoned well. My friend had the greek chicken and it was very moist. The only downside was the prices. I thought for 1 meat and 2 vegetables 11 dollars was a little high. I would definately return and next time save room for dessert.

Ted’s is a must-try on the southside of Birmingham. A small building on the corner of 4th Ave S and 12th St is where you find this gem of an establishment. The food is generously portioned and packed with flavor, the eatery is laid back with small booths and tables for twos and fours, and the staff and owners are a fabulously friendly and welcoming bunch. The baked Greek chicken and baked Greek tilapia were excellent – the chicken was moist and tender, and the fish was a meaty fillet. There’s a huge array of sides to choose from, but the squash, creamed potatoes and creamed corn made it to our plates and were all heaped on to accompany the meats. The desserts, on prominent display above the hot bar, proved too much to resist, and we topped off our already hefty meal with a slice each of chocolate crème and strawberry pie. Following in the fashion of the rest of the fare, both pieces were big, and they were light and delicious t’boot. Our waitress was courteous and attentive, and the owners were constantly about the dining room, checking on guests and greeting regulars. For a meat-and-three hole-in-the-wall, Ted’s was as good as any out there.
