I have stayed at Caj house for a few months for work and it was lackluster experience. The rooms are decent/okay, but you can do that if you bought everything from Ikea, it does not have that historical feel I come to expect from the Tremont area of Boston. It’s livable… I guess. The biggest problem is that the owner does not believe he lives in the 21st century. The TV for entertainment is quite small and poor quality, my grandmother has a better TV and she’s dead. The channel selection on said TV is piss poor, unless you’re into 20 channels of Spanish TV and Fox. They sell the illusion of having TV but from what I gathered they bought the cable package of every channel no one wants to watch. Then comes the biggest issue, the worse Internet known to man, seriously it’s like the speed of AOL dialup. This place demands you not stream movies and limits you to viewing only webpages as long as you don’t excessively view to many webpages. Coming from out of town for work and not knowing people here, also no car to drive around, I personally would love to be able to watch movies or video chat with my family at night, but no you can not do this at this place. I was able to do it several times, trying to at least speak to my family every couple of days, but the management caught wind of it and promptly banned all my devices MAC addresses from using the network. I promptly emailed the owners to find out what happened and I got ran response of saying I used an excessive amount of data and was banned. I kindly let them know it was impossible for me to have done that on their network at their internet speed and I was also working 12 hours a day and hardly there, but I got in response were condescending emails from a guy named Walter Ferme, who I seem to understand is the owner. This man lacks any customer service, constantly belittling the people renting his units. I have discussed in great length with my coworkers that also have stayed in his units and they all received the same condescending emails from Walter. In the end I will strongly recommend my company to never use Caj house again, for the price you can easily find a place on Tremont that is better, that makes their residents feel at home. I would never recommend anyone to stay here, cutting corners and being an a**hole is Walter’s main business, not hospitality.

I stayed at CAJ House 2 times over the past 6 years — the first time at the Worcester Street location, and most recently for the month of Dec 2011 at the Tremont Street location. I have lived on and off in Boston proper for 15 years, and know the neighborhoods, price of rentals, and hotel costs very well. I can attest that CAJ House offers an incredible value for a furnished studio in a prime Boston neighborhood(South End). Of the 3 rooms I stayed in, all have either hardwood floors or laminate floors that look like hardwood — my preference over carpeting for cleanliness. The mattresses were very comfortable, and sheets were of good quality. The Tremont St location is great; just 2⁄5 of a mile to the Prudential in Back Bay where I was working(and location of a Green line train stop), and ½ mile to the Back Bay Orange Line/Amtrak station(on the route to NYC). It is also very close to all the restaurants in the South End(home of many of Boston’s top and trendiest restaurants). Tremont is a busy street, so I requested a room in the back and it was very quiet. Parking can be tricky in the South End(even with a resident sticker) but there are some non-resident spots between the Tremont Street location(at the corner of West Newton) and Mass Ave where you can keep your car for a few days(easiest to find such spots in the evening). The Worcester Street location is also convenient(7⁄10 of a mile from the Prudential), and is on a side street that is more residential. The owner and caretaker are very helpful and responsive. Note the kitchenettes are perfectly sufficient for heating up take-out or preparing simple stove top meals. They are not equipped for much more than that.

I stayed for a week at the CAJ house and consider this a fantastic alternative to a hotel. It seems they normally rent on a monthly basis, but rentals for a week or more are also accepted, albeit at a slightly higher rate.(Though significantly cheaper than even the most basic hotel in downtown Boston.) The apartment I stayed in was at the 45 Worcester Street location.(They have 2 locations, one at Tremont and one at Worcester.) When I arrived, someone met me at the front door to let me in and hand over keys for the week. At that point, I felt like a resident in a stylishly decorated studio apartment on a gorgeous street of brownstones. There are a few small things I would do to improve the experience. For example, while there is a kitchen, and some dishes, pots, pans, and cutlery, a few key essentials are missing. There’s an oven, but not a single dish that can be put into the oven.(A cookie sheet would be nice?) However, it was overall a great experience in a well stocked apartment in close proximity to public transportation. Why not live more like a local? I’d take this over a hotel any day.
