Helaine Smith, DMD

Pay no heed to Peter M.‘s overlong, overcritical review of Helaine Smith. She was a wonderful dentist in every respect and did not deserve the treatment she got from the Board of Health. As a result of their intrusive nitpicking about insignificant details, she sold her practice because the Board of Health’s rules made it not fun for her to practice dentistry anymore.
Helaine Smith continues her dentistry advocacy as co-​owner of Dental Communications Group, a dental consulting firm in Arlington, MA; a frequent writer and lecturer on dentistry (see her e-​books «Healthy Mouth, Healthy Sex!» and «Keep Your Body Healthy. .. Brush Your Teeth!» as well as her YouTube videos); and an active participant in such volunteer organizations as Operation Smile, Cape CARES, and Give Back a Smile. She is also the Boston-​area director for the California Center for Advanced Dental Studies Co-​Program.
She is sorely missed by the community. The holistic spa ambiance of her office made everyone relax about coming to the dentist, she was friendly and warm to everybody, and was very charming in her demeanor. Her many awards include the 2005 runner-​up for the prestigious Roger Levin DDS Cosmetic Practice of the Year Award, Medical Billing and Coding’s blog award as one of the 2010 Top 30 Dentist Blogs («The Successful Smiles Blog» at
), a business award from her alma mater, Suffolk University’s Sawyer Business School, and numerous community service awards.
I’m sure you can see how the Board of Health did her wrong. We miss you, Dr. Smith.

Dr. Smith’s soothing office, wonderful and hysterical personality, professionalism, and dentistry expertise keeps me coming back every time. She is the best dentist in the Boston area. If I could give her and her office staff 10 stars I would.

What a great dentist and office. She is so thorough, attentive and good at what she does, the office is spotless, beautiful, and smells nice, and everyone that works there is SOO nice too– not like other dentists’ offices where they act like they couldn’t care less about you or your business. I’m never going anywhere else. Truly a relaxing and top-​notch dental experience.

Going to Dr. Smith was truly a great experience. I love the spa-​like atmosphere (I’m not usually a fan of fountains and what-​not, but I appreciated the fact that the office wasn’t at all clinical). Dr. Smith really listened to all my concerns and addressed each one comprehensively. She uses digital x-​rays and was able to instantly show me what was going on with my teeth. Once again, great experience and I’ll be recommending her to all my friends.

The best dental experience of my life. Atmosphere like a spa. Very serene with a fountain and very friendly accommodating staff. Hygienist was great — thorough, explained everything, and was able to show x-​rays on a screen. Dr. Smith was personable, thorough, and kind. I had my first cavity filled by her and I didn’t feel a thing. Finally, there are bakery goods to take on your way out… cookies and brownies at the dentist! Be afraid no more, this dentist is your friend!
