Welcome back to Boulder! I missed Nature’s Own SOOO much when they left the Pearl St. Mall 15 years ago or so. Occasionally, I’d meander up to Nederland to enjoy their remaining Boulder County location up in the mountains and was forever in awe of the fossils on display. The new Boulder location has beautiful pieces of geologic history for the taking coupled with butterfly displays, educational toys, and staff who are happy to engage and answer your questions. This is more than just a rock shop. There is some breathtaking jewelry, a few impressive furniture pieces, and the kind of fossil record that makes you feel small and insignificant in a GOOD way! I guess the prices aren’t awful for what you’re getting and they DO have to pay Pearl St. Mall rent, but I’d probably spend a lot more time and money here if the price point were just a little lower. It’s really my only complaint, and one which won’t keep me from going back on a pretty regular basis.

Yet another«oldie but goodie» has returned to Boulder. Nature’s Own was original to Boulder and Nederland going back a few decades. At some point they shrank to just Nederland and a few mall outposts at the holidays and a store in Fort Collins. And of course, mail order via internet as the years progressed. A few weeks ago, they opened a really nice place on Pearl, which we happened upon after dinner and gelato tonight. They have always had the best selection of Wyoming fish and plant fossils of any shop I have been to. They have some truly remarkable specimens on display near the entrance. They also have a large selection of other stone and fossil gift items, some old classics but also some newer styles. Many of these smaller items are imports from Pakistan and the like and therefore quite inexpensive. Pretty, but not local, but they fill a niche in the market. However, they do have a stunning table, handmade from a piece of the oldest/largest cottonwood in Boulder County, that partially fell apart a few years ago. Bigger and more expensive than my house could take, but worth dreaming about. It is worth it just to go see it. I bought a small item that was just the little upgrade we needed in a spot in our house and I saw a few items that I will come back for when I am doing some holiday gift shopping this fall. I was so glad to see them back in town.
