Sushi Hana

Hana is a great place for a quick bite to eat while you’re on the hill. I highly recommend going during happy hour when rolls are 2 for 7 and appetizers are fairly cheap.
I recommend the magic mushrooms! Their aioli is delicious and similar to that of Hapa on Pearl.

Terrible service. Our waiter didn’t bring us chopsticks or plates. One of the plates was forgotten about. When the plate was eventually brought to us our waiter dropped it on us. We then tried to cancel the order and they insisted that we take it to go, and then didn’t take it off of our bill. When we refused to pay for the plate they took the roll back. Finally when we split the bill two of them were over charged, and we were so desperate to leave that we paid the extra money. The waiters are rude unfriendly and inhospitable. Not to mention the food is subpar.

I got sushi rolls. The rolls tasted fine but really small I thought for the price. I think it was eight bucks for the shrimp tempura roll and it was five slim slices. Eight bucks should buy me more than one shrimp!

A little bit expensive for the quality and quantity of the sushi. The Sugar Mama Roll had mini pieces if eel. Also you would expect a better flavor.

We love Hana. The owner/​staff are always friendly, we get a table right away, and the prices are good. They have happy hour 3 – 5 I believe and it’s 2 for 1 rolls. The hill definitely needs a sushi place, so I hope they always stay in business. I like to request extra ginger with my brown rice salmon avocado roll (very good here, so is the edamame) and they know well enough to bring out a small bowl full of it. It’s very cold inside so bring a jacket!

The Good:
We went on a rainy Tuesday night and it was very quiet at Sushi Hana on the Hill (I bet it gets busy when the students are in town, and they made lots of sushi for take-​out the whole time we were there).
We sat at the sushi bar and enjoyed an absolutely delicious meal of sake, sushi and sashimi. The sushi chef, Larry (don’t be fooled by the name, he’s Japanese!) was fantastic and has been practicing sushi for fifteen years! He plated our meal with attention and care — we ordered a lot of food and while we were waiting he sent out the (gluten-​free) cucumber roll, which was beautifully rolled, crispy, fresh and a perfect and thoughtful appetizer. Our sushi & sashimi arrived thoughtfully plated as well, perfectly arranged for us to share, and he even placed the heavier fish rolls on my boyfriend’s end of the plate, and the lighter vegetarian rolls on my side. Everything was tightly, perfectly rolled, the fish was fresh, and I don’t know why but their ginger is the best I’ve ever had, we ate all of it!!!
I also loved watching the sushi sensei (I think the owner) watch the sushi chef with a hawkeye – he clearly cares and wants everything to be perfect, and it makes a difference!
Also, I loved the music (classic, old-​school, upbeat hip-​hop).
The Bad:
Our server seemed inexperienced and was pretty awkward but it didn’t detract from our experience too much since we sat at the sushi bar. He brought our bill the second we were finished eating but we still had half a bottle of sake and wanted to relax and watch the chef.
The Food:
The best meal I’ve ever had on the hill! (And I’ve lived in Boulder almost 30 years and lived on the hill for several)

Check out Sushi Hana for awesome, authentic sushi, sashimi, nigiri & sake. I think it’s family owned — support small business! Everything was delicious and lovely and I can’t wait to go back.

The service is quick but that may have been because we were the only ones in at the time. They are speedy to bus dishes and they used a system of marking the menu sheet to order.
Because of the sheet, the food come out together and on the same plate. Not a bad concept if you’re comfortable sharing things with other people.
The spicy is not much to write about. But the wasabi was so on point it gave the heat i needed.
The hanarita cocktail is refreshing and has the right amount of lime to orange.
I would come again because the people were kind and it has somewhat reasonable prices.
It’s a little hard to find but it’s across the street from Al’s.

Terrible service. We had a big group I know that can be demanding with having to cater to people’s needs but shouldn’t be to much to ask as its your job as a server.
Slow slow.
Received an appetizer that we had canceled that was swimming in ponzu sauce. Waiter spilled some on my head and did not apologize nor try to even acknowledge it!
Group ordered lots of different rolls I only tried 2 pieces as I was put off by the sauce on my head and face and everything I tasted was fishy. Not in a good way in the fish is not quality way!
Needless to say don’t live in Boulder but won’t be returning to sushi Hana the reviews are true go to hapa!!! Or even the grocery store!

So don’t let all these reviews fool you. This place has great sushi. It is the same price or cheaper as Hapa. I have never had an issue with rude service. The people are always really friendly when my girlfriend and I come in. People need to give this place a chance, and maybe try being friendly to your server.

The servers are rude… I also left an essay on the table and when I called back 30 minutes later asking about it I heard my server in the background saying he threw it away… the lady on the phone then came back to the phone and said they didn’t find one.

Some of the best sushi I’ve ever had and their chicken fried rice was to die for! For what you’re getting, it is very inexpensive and you for sure get your money’s worth. Everything I tried had a very fresh flavor as if it was just out of the ocean. I will probably be eating at Sushi Hana once a week now:)

Everything tasted fine, but it was nothing spectacular. The portions are insanely paltry– the rolls are tiny. $ 30 got us 3 rolls and a tofu tempura appetizer but it wasn’t enough to fill us both. The delivery driver could barely speak English, which I don’t want to be a dick about, but he also couldn’t find my place or understand my directions. Fella needs to get himself a GPS. Probably not going to order again.

This place was great. Quick service. Happy servers. Definitely recommend it for people who want a laid back environment and excellent food. Plus the price wasn’t bad either

To be fair, this review only embraces delivery service, not food. Do NOT order delivery from this place. They subcontract it out to hungry
, and we waited over an hour and 15 minutes to get our order. When I called to check on it, the phone number went right to voicemail that was not even set up. I finally cancelled the order and called Moongate, which I should have done in the first place.

This place is terrible. Don’t waste your time. They bought the place from Hapa (which rocks!) and only changed the p to an n on the sign. This is an obvious attempt to have people continue to come in and believe they are eating at Hapa. The quality of food was exceptionally bad, the service matched, and the well kept, stylish interior that once was Hapa has not been kept up. I was actually pretty surprised at how dirty the place was. If you want sushi, go to Hapa or Japango on Pearl. If you’re on that block and ready to eat, Café Aion is an exceptional treat, especially for Wednesday night Paella night (Paella for 2 and a bottle of wine for only $ 49!)

Great for a sushi lunch if you’re on the hill. They haven’t changed much here from when it was Hapa on the Hill — just added a few of their own specialty items. I loved the nasu eggplant! It might be an acquired test, but eggplant is kind of an acquired taste. The fish tasted fresh and I enjoyed everything I had here.

I love this place. fantastic sushi right here in Longmont. Great staff, usually stellar service. I have been let down, trainees set free too soon. It’s been a wonderful culinary experience every time. I’ve never been let down by the food or the friendliness.
Great rolls, sashimi, and friends have been happy ordering off the dinner menu.

I don’t know what Jeremiah was talking about, but I went in there for the first time this afternoon and their sushi was amazing! The staff were very nice, the sushi were really fresh. I ordered the Tuna Dumpling and Nanuto Roll. The Tuna Dumpling was amazing, it has avocado, snow crab, crunch and green tobiko, wrapped with a slice of tuna with eel sauce and some sort of spicy mayo. Now the Nanuto Roll, for a $ 12 roll, the amount of fish the chef put in was quite decent. I am a really big eater, but I got full from the two items. Really good atmosphere, great list of drinks. I would recommend this restaurant to my friends, had a great time there.

Hapa is gone, Sushi Spot is looong gone and Hana is now the only sushi place still on the hill.
The last time i was in this building it was still hapa, and honestly not a whole lot has changed. It looks like who ever bought the business bought most of the equipment and plates that were already in the building. From what i can tell they painted one of the walls and that’s about the only thing that changed. Even the menu is quite similar in terms of pricing and whats on it, however there are fewer items on the menu now. Good-​Bye Nato Maki, you will me missed.
Unfortunately they don’t use the little sheet of paper you fill out to put down which sushi rolls you want. I always found that to be a really covenant way of ordering. Instead they have these giant ugly spiral bound menu’s. They get the job done but they’re less convenient than the paper.
When my sushi rolls arrived i was surprised in there size. It’s a thin line to walk deciding how much rice to put with a sushi roll, if there’s to much it overpowers the flavor of the fish, and if there’s too little it leaves you wanting for more. Unfortunately these rolls air on the smaller side… the MUCH smaller side, the California roll i had was easily the smallest sushi roll i had ever seen. All the other rolls we received where quire small as well. When your dropping $ 12 on a single roll i’d expect it to be bigger; even the $ 5.25 tiny cali roll seemed a bit pricy given the size of the roll. The nigiri was standard size however.
The fish quality was quite good and is about what you’d expect from sushi grade fish that you can get in Colorado.
The Rice preparation for the sushi rice seemed as if too much water was added into the steamer wile cooking the rice. I also detected some saltiness to the sushi vinegar, which i personally don’t like. The wasabi on our plate was also poorly prepared. Since real wasabi root is so expensive most restaurants and home chefs make there wasabi by mixing wasabi powder with water. Generally you want it to be on the thick pasty side, if its thin pasty it won’t hold its shape and it’ll lack flavor. Unfortunately it was super thin here.
I’m not sure if it was where i was sitting but most of the time i was seated i could smell the dish pit in the back. That smell of hot water and detergent mixed with everyone’s leftovers. It’s not a very appetizing odor. but it was pretty predominant for about thirty minutes of our meal.
So overall, The food is pretty good however the portions are small (small even for sushi standards). There were enough things that were just slightly off to throw off our eating experience. So all in all if you don’t want to deal with the sometimes awful parking on pearl this is an okay alternative to the sushi places around there.
