It was a very nice day so we ate on the patio and had a margarita. It was a very nice atmosphere and the service was great! GREATFOODANDGREATSERVICE! A must eat place!

As I believe one reviewer stated, there’s not a ton of choices out this way, but El Charro is a solid, A-OK experience. We were making the drive from outside of Houston to Austin and it was a pretty chilly day with the temperature still dropping. We stopped in for dinner. We were seated right away and given chips and salsa. Food came out piping hot(ok, I so rarely take people seriously when they say«the plate is hot» but yeow, heed their warning!) and tasting very good. The margaritas were tasty and plentiful. Not a knock-your-socks off meal, but sometimes you’re just looking for comfort and good and something everyone can enjoy. Lovely looking patio seating out front(if it hadn’t been freezing, we would have undoubtedly sat there), lots of parking. Service was a little on the slow side after we had our food(we asked for our check, but never got it. Finally got up and went to the bar and asked to pay out). I’d definitely return.

The service was slow and they were not even busy, I had a margarita so I was ok but it annoyed my husband, who’s back was hurting, because we were on our way to Kimberley to start our weekend trip and had to stay longer than we wanted. I had the tortilla soup which I liked because of the fresh ingredients, first time ever I am served a tortilla soup with broccoli, but you never know with tortilla soup, everyone has their version of it. My husband had the enchiladas which he ate but was not very happy with them, don’t remember why now.

The pollo lucas was dry, hard to chew. Guacamole was bland, had to add salt. The charro beans had a good flavor but were too salty. The chicken fajitas were not dry like the pollo Lucas; however, the fajita meat was bland as well. The tortillas were not bad for not being homemade. The salsa and chips were delish! The Pepsi I drank had plenty of pep, not flat. The place had a problem with flies. Place was pretty much empty. Service wasn’t bad. Left full.

Some of the worst Mexican food ever. Total miscommunication with the two waiters. Had to ask for the check so many times finally just approached the bar. Food probably came out of a can. No flavor, stale. Do not go.

Went here with a couple friends, and we all enjoyed our meals. Salsa was phenomenal, shrimp fajitas were amazing, and the staff was so welcoming. We were skeptical at first after reading the earlier reviews, but we can say from personal experience now that this is a great place to dine!

Fresh to the best of any chefs ability out there when it comes to Tex-Mex. Had an amazing experience with the enchiladas. Salsa is a ride of flavor that even the most well seasoned professional would give accolades over. Bravo and will be coming again in the future. A mainstay to the Brenham area.

Very difficult to get into at night. The salsa was good, but I do not go to a restaurant to eat salsa. The chile rellanos was mushy and tasteless. The chicken fajitas were very dry. The worst meal was the enchiladas mole. It tasted like salty, burnt chocolate out of a can. The service was absolutely HORRIBLE. I can understand if the place is full, but it was empty. We asked for drink refills 3x never got it. We asked for the check 2x which was supposed to be split it came 30 minutes later, only after my son went to find someone, and it was not split. We could have walked out and I don’t think anyone would have been the wiser. Never ever again.

Nowhere near as good as they used to be. Very sad. Service now is awful. The waiter didn’t speak to us other than to say«ready» Not his name or even any more words just put items on table. Food was horrible. My chicken fajitas were covered in what seemed to be vegetable oil. Shiny and greasy and tasted like oil. No seasoning it seemed. Beans tasted burnt. Rice looked so bad we didn’t even try it. We used to love this place so sad.

There are not a lot of dining options on this part of 290. This is a very good choice. The patio is vey nice and there is a yard where the kids can run around. The service is prompt and friendly and the food is delicious. If you like supporting independent local businesses and good food, you will be glad that you stopped here.

Mediocrity at its best. Found this joint on the way to Houston, here again the next day on the way back to Austin. I’m not sure if the bloody Mary has celery or a huge stalk of cilantro in it, with a weak shot and a bunch of v8. Fuckit. The food is ok, and the patio has a shit-ton of flies. Sad part is I’m probly gonna come back cuz it’s like dining in my shitty home of El Paso. Besides the flies this patio ain’t so bad, and the long haired server be pretty cool. I think my jack and coke is talking now, they made that one proper!

Great Tex-Mex. I’m not a fan of overly«gringo-fied» Mexican, and I was pleased with what I was served at El Charro. Salsa is served warm and slightly spicy, great tasting flour tortillas, delicious margaritas– had mine on the rocks. They aren’t afraid of cilantro or cumin. Had the stuffed avocado and was pleased. Definitely will return when I’m back in the area.

This is one of the worst Mexican restaurants I’ve ever eaten at. I’ve had several of their dishes and all were mediocre. Even the chicken quesadillas, which are usually foolproof, tasted like they were made with sliced American cheese. Service is usually good though.

I think this might become our new favorite road-trip stop while on the way to Austin! It is conveniently located right on 290, and the food is AWE-SOME! I judge all Mexican restaurants on their salsa and El Charro knocked it out of the park! I love it when salsa is served warm– and they pile on fresh veggies on top for your mix in as well. It’s spicy, flavorful, and homemade tasting. Win! I ordered the El Jacal– it came out w/a starter plate of guacamole salad and a beef taco. The beef taco was fresh, hot and juicy and the guacamole was smooth with a few larger chunks of avocado in it. I cleaned my plate. The 2nd plate was 2 cheese enchiladas with rice and beans. The cheese enchiladas had the perfect amount of cheddar cheese filling and were covered with a chili gravy. The refried beans were just okay– probably the only weak point of the meal, but I still enjoyed the hell out of my meal. It has a huge patio outside that looks like it would be fun to enjoy when its not summertime and its cooler outside.

Warm salsa was a hit. Service was very good. The iced tea tasted like real tea, not watered down version often served. The stuffed avacado my friend had looked better than my sour cream enchiladas, despite the fact that I cleaned my plate. Even if you didn’t want to eat, this would be a great place to stop off for a drink and chips and salsa on the deck.

This place is a little hard to find but it’s a great stop on the way to Houston from Austin. It’s on 290 just like a mile or less before 290 makes the right turn just before it hits Brenham. It has a non-lit billboard-type sign(though smaller) and the restaurant sits back off the road a bit… easy to miss… Cool place, really good salsa(the kind they serve still warm from roasting), friendly staff and my taco a la carte was good. I’d try it again!
