My review is from the other end of Greenleaf’s business. They buy product from the farm I work at, and over the years I have seen a tremendous effort to raise quality standards while still maintaining close relationships with local organic farmers. I’m not going to self promote, in the interest of remaining true to the review, so I’ll leave the name out of it. They can be a tough one to deal with. If our product doesn’t look great, they have no problem sending my truck right back where it came from. It’s a pain, but the quality control has gotten a lot tougher, especially since they hired on some great team members in that area. The infrastructure has improved a lot too! Their new refrigerated receiving dock is top of the line! This means that product never has to be exposed to out of range temperatures when unloading from a refrigerated truck. I just had to say something, because I see the hard work on their end, and I’ve got a unique perspective on it. I see the end of it that isn’t at your restaurant, the beginning. I may not be the best at reviews, but I gave it a shot, and just spoke about what I’ve experienced.

They used to be so good and expensive. Now they are just expensive. They have horrible manners on the phone and in the warehouse. Down right disrespectful! Deliveries are NEVER in the delivery window. Even when they forced me into a certain time slot, they never delivered on time! Lied to me about bringing the product later that day that I ordered, was billed for, but not delivered! Horrible business! I say try VeggieWorks! They carry most of the same products and same farms but much less pricy. They also care and are nice!

A good produce company that I have dealt with many times. The products are generally of good quality and if not they are quick to issue a credit or replacement item. They keep the warehouse clean and most of the employees seem to have pretty good dispositions. The delivery personnel seem to generally know what they are doing and provide pretty good customer service compared to some of the others we have dealt with. They will actually take the items to your walk-in area and go through the order with you, instead of dropping it off at the front of the building and letting you play the game of «where are the carrots?».

If you are a customer of this company, you may already be aware of the many delivery and quality problems. If you like to receive wilted or rotten produce on a regular basis, go with this company. If you like getting your produce AFTER your lunch rush, go with Greenleaf. If you like being blamed for their mistakes, then this is the place for you. Greenleaf used to be a relatively small, boutique company privately owned by William Wilkinson(formerly Campton Place GM) as well as some partners inside and outside the company. 75% of Greenleaf was sold to Oakville Produce Partners in 2008. Oakville owns various companies in the food industry(e.g., grocery, restaurants) and has only served to create a more corporate environment which is disrespectful of customers and employees. Mr. Wilkinson and his company are slowly slipping into mediocrity as the end of his life approaches. You don’t want to work for this company, unless you enjoy working in a crisis driven, chaotic environment. Very poor communications, absent managers, executives who like to blame others for their problems, endless money spent on useless consultants, and busy work. Numbers drive this firm — not quality. So if you admire companies like Frito Lay(where there VP came from), then by all means go with this company. Otherwise, stick with those produce companies that concentrate on the highest quality produce and a staff that cares.
