My family and I have been regulars at Mamma Rosa’s for years; it’s pretty much everything you want out of an Italian-American deli. Located at the border of Pelham Gardens and Allerton, it’s among a number of businesses along the Allerton Avenue strip. The deli itself is small — if there’s more than 4 to 5 people inside it can get a little cramped. However, the service is friendly and they get you out relatively quickly so this minor inconvenience can be overlooked. What makes Mamma’s a gem is their selection — the walls of the deli are lined with typical items found in a deli such as chips and cooler with soft drinks plus a number of Italian items which give the deli it’s charm. There are a number of speciality sandwiches to choose from, but like any deli you can have a sandwich made to your liking. Additionally, they have a number of Italian and American hot items available plus daily specials. Catering is another hallmark of Mamma’s business, and like their regular deli menu they have a large selection of food for catering. Again, mostly Italian and American sections. Their pasta and chicken dishes are my favorites, but pretty much anything they make is delicious. They also offer delivery service for catering jobs which is always a plus. Mamma’s delivers the goods — they have a large selection and their food is the real deal. Additionally, their consistency and customer service make it stand out amongst the many Italian delis in the Bronx.
