Second time in a couple weeks that I’ve stopped by and they didn’t have curry goat. Isn’t that like one of the top dishes a Jamaican restaurant is always supposed to have? Also, the last time I ordered a large, and it was mostly all gravy. I thought the bulges were meat, but it was mainly potatoes. I was pissed. Step yo game up Bickels.

I stumbled in here on a Sunday afternoon, when most of the Fulton Avenue storefronts are shuttered and traffic on the avenue was winding down. I walked in only after realizing this wasn’t a fast food chain, but rather a local joint offering Jamaican food from a small counter space. My jerk chicken was pretty good, moist and adequately spiced(I swallowed a dried clove, however, which wasn’t so great). Everything else was a bit of a miss. I passed on the wilted vegetables, and my plantains were greasy and inedible. The portions at the restaurants make no sense. The $ 6 small is too teeny for a meal, but the $ 8 medium is more than twice the size. I’d bring a friend and split the $ 9 large size. Service was very friendly, but I’m sure I can get better jerk chicken elsewhere in Bed-Sty.

This place opened up in September from I understand, and the first time I drove by I noticed it because it it very bright and stands out on the block. What crossed my mind was«Bickels… That must be some GOOD jerk.» I finally had it for the first time a few days ago and had to go back again today. The first time, I had the jerk chicken, which I LOVED — it was hot, but also had a sweetness to it, which is probably why I liked it so much because I don’t normally like my food to hurt me. This time, I was tempted to get more of the jerk, but had to convince myself to try something else on the menu and see if it was just as good. I went for the curry chicken which was very good, but a little too hot for my tastes. I’m sure anyone who likes hot n spicy stuff would enjoy it. They also have fish, lobster, shrimp, oxtail, soups, porridge/cornmeal/oatmeal, sorrel, and homemade juices. The portions are really good for the price(don’t be fooled by looking at the size of the containers). I got a «small» meal, which includes the meat, choice of rice or rice and peas, and cabbage/veggies. They also ask you if you want gravy on top and if you want plantain with it. I got the plantain and also a fried dumpling(only 50 cents) and couldn’t even finish it all. I was especially excited to find out that it’s open 24 hours(great for after partying till dawn) and they do deliver. Although, while I was there, someone called for delivery, but because the delivery guy that was there was on foot, the caller was too far.(Granted, we’ve got a foot of snow on the ground here right now). Hopefully, they can get it together enough to always have someone available who drives. Lastly, as a side note — this place is NOT in Fort Greene, it’s more like on the border of Bed-Stuy and Clinton Hill. I live just a few blocks away in Bed-Stuy. This place is just a few doors down from the corner of Franklin Ave and Fulton St, where the C local and S shuttle trains stop.

After a late night movie. My boyfriend. who is admittedly a black hole at times, needed food and needed it fast. This not uncommon situation, warranted a good place to eat in my area. Usually, this is a problem being that the only 24 hour places around are Popeyes and scary bodegas with creeper cats inside. Fearing the worst, we hopped off of the Franklin C stop and lo and behold we spotted Bickles Jerk! What used to be a random jerk chicken place was now replaced by a seemingly decent looking food joint. After our grand tour of the whole building by the adorable teenaged girl behind the counter, which included a showing of the back deck via cellphone light, we settled on the jerk chicken/rice/bean/veggie combo. It had to be the most satisfying thing I had eaten all day. Finally! a decent place near where I live! Best of all, its open 24 hours! I love you Bickels Jerk! Your menu holds a special place inside my menu drawer at home. I plan on ordering delivery from you frequently, once New York freezes over this December –Wray

This used to be a hole in the wall jerk chicken spot named Gold Coast that served the best(est) jerk chicken, peas and rice and incredible red snapper. I swear my sister and I were misty-eyed when they closed. I was so happy to see this place reopen as another restaurant and not a 99 cent/sneaker/card/awful jewelry/mobile phone spot… yay! There are positives: service is fast/friendly, the food is pretty authentic and tasty and, the prices are affordable. Wait, are you sitting? They deliver!!! And, wait, wait, they are open 24 hours! Yes, finally, a restaurant that isn’t going to give you fries with that order is open 24 hours in the area. Bodega, not included.
