I went to Commune this past Friday and was pleasantly surprised. I have search all throughout Williamsburg and the city for a good salon, but they are hard to come by. I have tried salons in Williamsburg particularly and have been disappointed most of the time. My experience at Commune was amazing however, and I have found a new great spot. Ami was my stylist and when I showed up I was attended to within 5 minutes. I showed her a picture of what I wanted and she suggested a different play on it. She was worried the cut would come out too old. We talked through what I wanted and she gave me exactly that. My blowout was amazing and it lasted all week. I really appreciated her expertise in knowing what would be good for me and what wouldn’t. I will definitely return.

My dear sister recommended Shoko for a haircut and now I see why! She is super friendly and sweet, listens to exactly what you want, and executes beautifully. The only salon I’ve ever been to where the stylist also washes your hair, and Shoko did a very nice and gentle job. Everything here is executed with care and attention to detail. I felt very taken care of, not rushed. A Very enjoyable experience from start to finish. The salon itself is also adorable! The front has a gift shop with lots of natural products, home goods, and jewelry. Also, prices are extremely reasonable for the level of service and skill. Thanks Shoko! I’ll be back :)

I love this salon! And just by coincidence, three of my girlfriends are also regular clients here. I’ve never had a disappointing experience with any of the stylists, but definitely Aki and Kumiko are my favorites. One of the things that I especially appreciate about this salon: I don’t feel obligated to make small talk. Other salons seem to put a premium on chatting away with the customers, and when it doesn’t happen naturally, it feels too forced and uncomfortable. With Kumiko and Aki, I enjoy a bit of chatter and they’re always just as easy to giggle as I am, which is a great match for me. But it’s also just as comfy to let the work happen in silence.(I esp hate trying to talk over a blow dryer. As I’ve been forced to do at other places. So ridic!) The salon is beautiful and the staff are professional. They are very thoughtful about their cuts, and always ask for my opinion as they work. I would never worry about them cutting too much off — if anything, I think they sense my generally conservative nature, and I have to assure them that we could go a little bit more extreme with my hair — and I wouldn’t be bothered.

I got a haircut with Taka on Friday and my hair looks great. I had a lot of damage on my ends from DIY ombré that really needed to be chopped off. He understood that I wanted to keep my length while improving the overall health of my hair. He gave one of the best shampoos my head has ever experienced with a thorough scalp scrub and massage, and a warm towel on my neck! He was able to keep the length of my hair, get rid of the damaged ends, clean up my bangs perfectly, and give me a gorgeous blowout for my unruly curls. He’s also just a cool guy. I’ll definitely be back!

Been going to Commune for ~5 years and seeing Shoko for 3+years alone — she takes great care of my long, thick, messy hair at a price that’s nearly impossible to beat. Commune also has an amazing vibe and pretty easy to make an appointment — usually can get something on the books less than a week in advance unless I’m doing color too.

Went in earlier today to get a simple bob or somewhat or a «Lob». Showed the stylist multiple pictures of the cut I wanted and she made me believe she understood exactly what I wanted. I hate to give them 2 stars because overall she was the sweetest & treated me very kindly, the shampoo & conditioning was amazing & she seemed to have paid attention to my requests, or so I thought. But then the cut… it’s horrible. It is not what I asked for, not even close. It’s so short & hideous, it is with no exaggeration exactly what I did NOT want. Her name was Nam, or Nami I believe. This place seems great every one else has given them amazing reviews, I just think I landed in the wrong hands of commune.

I went to Shoko this past weekend to get bangs, a HUGE change for me. I’ve always had long hair and I wanted a change. She was extremely knowledgable, listened to what I wanted, and gave her advice on what would look best. Everyone is right — the head massage is one of the best parts. I just washed my hair and styled it myself and it came out exactly like when she did it, which never happens for me! I will definitely be going back. The price is right and the entire storefront is adorable. So happy I found Commune!

One day while browsing Williamsburg, I found a small gift/salon which I’ve kept bookmarked for over a year. My usual salon had recently closed its branch that I usually go to which made me want try out a new salon so I decided to go to Commune after reading all the positive reviews on Unilocal. I was hoping to get an appointment over the Labor Day weekend but wasn’t able to since it was already full booked. So I made an appointment for the following week. The salon has a very modern/rustic feel which I love. The recliner at the hair washing station was super comfy compared to my old salon’s rigid and uncushioned one. I had long hair and decided to go super short. I showed Shoko some pictures of how I want my hair to be and she did an amazing job with cutting my hair exactly how I described. I didn’t really need to explain too much and Shoko pretty much understand what I want. She made me feel at ease and was super easy to talk to. I’m very satisfied by the outcome! One gripe: the salon wasn’t air-conditioned enough so I was sweating bullets under the plastic barber cape and I wasn’t offered anything to drink. I felt a little dehydrated leaving the salon despite looking snazzy with my new look. :(

My stylist understood my hair tendencies and exactly the color/cut that I wanted. Best haircut and hair wash ever. Yes, my hair was fantastic after my appointment, but I can’t stress enough how relaxing and amazing that hair wash and scalp massage was. I would go back on a weekly basis to get just that if I could. Furthermore, the stylists here are so sweet, and lovely. I can’t give enough stars. Thank you, Commune, for being so wonderful to hair and souls everywhere.

Wow. Best hair cut I’ve EVER had. I had Nami and she was an utter delight. The salon is so welcoming and cute. Everything about the experience was relaxing. She didn’t speak much English but knew EXACTLY what I wanted. I couldn’t be happier. I have finally found my salon!

I actually had no idea this place was a salon when I passed by several times prior to my session. I came to get my roots done and was greeted by a very cute gift shop(the salon reminds me of Anthropologie) at the front and a welcoming reception desk person. I got my hair color done by Nami, who is soft-spoken and a total sweetheart. Though I was the last client of the day, she was meticulous with getting the hair color right and mused at how much hair I had without making me feel apologetic for it(like some Chinese-owned hair places often do). I have thick, long black hair that has been dyed throughout the years so I was not surprised when my roots had a slight orangey tinge to it after the initial rinse and did not look exactly like the swatch. Lo and behold though, after Nami blow dried it and I was in different lighting, it looked EXACTLY like the hair color swatch… that normally would take double processing, but my girl got it done in just one! The dye(and all the other products) are of great quality and customer service cannot be beat – it IS Japanese owned after all, so expect to be looked after very well.

If you are looking for a simple haircut, go to Room Salon on Roebling where they are much more kid-friendly(since they are willing to cut big girls’(me) and little girls’(my daughter) hair alike without any fuss.

I’ve had long hair my entire life. Two years ago I decided to bite the bullet and try something drastic and new: a pixie cut! A friend recommended Commune Salon and I’ve been a devoted client since. I’ve had my hair styled by Kumiko, Shiho(who is sadly no longer at Commune) and Shoko — they are all wonderful, attentive and skilled stylists. If you’re looking for an affordable salon in a chic cozy space with great service(Kumiko gives THEBEST scalp massages) Commune is the place to go. PS — the new location on Roebling is absolutely gorgeous.

I’ve been living in NY for 10+ years and haven’t been able to find a great hair salon. Commune is now my home for my hair. They are extremely friendly and listen to what you are looking for. They have care and detail to their craft. Love their new location. Aki is great.

I’ve been to so many places in the city(part of my job is reviewing salons and stylists for magazines and websites) and by far my favorite cut has been from Commune. Kumiko knows how to cut hair and did exactly what I asked for(which included advising me on what kind of bangs would work best for me). You cannot beat the price for NYC and you also get an amazing scalp massage and hot towel during your shampoo. I highly recommend Commune.

This review is only based upon my first haircut experience here. I got bangs and hair trim by… what’s her name, Kumiko? She was good, just a few things I sort of expected the Japanese hair stylists won’t do happened here though.(splashing water on my face while blowing my hair with dryer after shampoo, my bangs got into my eyes, etc) That being said, I liked the result. It’s clean, and not a bad look for $ 60! I also am a fan of the space and décor of the shop. I always adore the window display here. Very nice salon.
