I had perhaps one of the most disturbing interactions with the man working at Heritage Wines. When I asked about why the restaurant next door had closed he proceeded to go on an anti-Muslim rant that was aggressive and uncomfortable. This wine store will never get any more of my money.

This wine shop seemed perfectly nice except that the attendant said offensive, loudly and unabashedly anti-Muslim statements – including about neighboring shop owners – while we were there. When I replied that he should be more respectful(and another client uncomfortably sidled away), he said he didn’t care. The wine here may be great, but any consumer who doesn’t support Islamophobia should think twice spend money here.

Friendly, engaged store owner. Can be somewhat hard to find what you’re Looking for as the middle sections aren’t labeled, but it’s a nice place to stumble on something if you have a few minutes to browse. You can get a decent bottle for $ 12-$ 15. Right off the subway stop, and in the area of some nice restaurants you may be able to bring your own bottles to. I’d pop in again if I was in the area.

The management seems to have changed, maybe twice, since I first posted. One misses Gian Carlo’s mellow radiance, and after him, young blond Matt’s casual yet professional friendly coolness. But the current vibe is still solid. Ducked in suddenly for a bottle to go with tonight’s littleneck clam experimental dinner, and forgot Thursday was their tasting night. The wines were lovely(the white perfect), and please note the prize for buying one of the wines being poured on a Thursday: a little loaf of luscious bread, baked that very morning a block away by one of the hosts, Craig, at The General Greene. Cheers to the other guy, Mark, I think — always nice to deal with, and Loida(sp?) She’s great too.

If you don’t like being treated like the blood enemy of pretentious wine guys(who seem to be attracted to coffee shops, bookstores, and wine shops) this is your place. The Thirst folks down the street need a solid cock punch and Greene Grape has hired some people who are more well suited for a line of work that does not involve interacting with humans. These guys are delightful and the prices and selection are great. The perfect place to grab a bottle if you are headed to the classic and fantastic BYOB place Black Iris.

This is a great place to pick up an unusual or unexpected bottle of wine. The selection is more varied and interesting than the neighborhood’s other wine shops, with regions most casual wine drinkers won’t even be familiar with. The friendly owner will happily give you advice without the hard sell, which is nice. It may be my imagination, but the prices seem more reasonable now than when it first opened.

I stumbled upon this wine store over the weekend while I was in the area – they had a sign out front advertising wine tastings that caught my eye. The owner himself was pouring the wines for the tasting and was easy to talk to and super friendly. He said the store hosts tastings every weekend, based around a theme. I ended up leaving with a bottle of one of the wines I tasted – a really great summery white. Prices seemed very fair and there was a large selection. This area has a lot to choose from in terms of wine stores, but Heritage has found its own place among them. Can’t wait to visit again the next time I’m on Dekalb Avenue.
