Cozy and intimate and rarely crowded. Lovely wine selections.

Mauzac is a tiny little place, seemingly placed next to… nothing, bordering the base of a beautiful, hilly park. Not gonna lie — it took a bit of walking to get to this place from the main drag we were initially on to get our hot tasty donuts. Luckily, we had the Django Unchained extended trailer to keep us occupied on the walk. Not recommended — — the sidewalks are uneven and in need of some TLC. If you care for your iPhone, look where you’re walking around these parts. So, sweaty and hungry(after just hoovering 3 or 4 donuts but walking it off to get here), we made it mid-afternoon on a Saturday. Barely no one is here mid-afternoon on a Saturday, which was fortunate because 1. the place is really small anyway, and 2. other sweaty bodies would be sucking up our precious A/C at a rapid clip. we were happy to not share! There’s one long bar across the back wall and enough room for stools, and that’s basically all there is to Mauzac. The bartender, or wine-connoisseur in this case, was locked and loaded, ready to serve us up something crisp and cool to cut the humidity. She spent a lot of time talking about our best choices for whites on a hot, humid day, and for reds if(in my case) we weren’t white-wine-people. She also talked a lot about each of the meats and cheeses offered in the small, yet satisfying menu of nibbles, and was able to describe textures, flavors, geographic origins, etc. of each and every one. We hunkered down for a few glasses of red and a board of deliciously cured and fatty meats and cheeses, served up with tiny toasts(because everything tastes better when it’s teeny). The bartender made light conversation, as there were few other people to talk to and she must have been so bored all afternoon just standing there, but she was never intrusive, never too chatty, never overstayed her welcome. The place is sparsely and modestly decorated, but still preserves the dim, classy vibe of a cozy little wine bar, despite the fact that it was mid-day, bright outside, and hot as hell. How DO they do that? Will certainly return, but maybe this time at night, after a long meal, to tuck away in a dark corner with a date. You should do the same.

I came here for the first time a couple days ago. I was on a date and this place was picked out by him. We had wine and cheeses and I loved it! Our waiter was great and so knowledgeable of the wines and cheeses. I had a great time and I recommend if your looking for a quiet cute place to chill and eat cheeses, try here!

This place is just lovely. It’s so welcoming and never overly crowded. It’s a great spot to sit outside with the pup and people watch, both passers by and folks in the park. And yet somehow it feels tucked away. The wine menu always seems to be changing and I love it when places offer flights. Prices are reasonable and staff is very friendly.

I’ve been here three times and had three different bartenders serve me. All of whom have been extremely nice, friendly, and patient during my wine selection process. They also made great recommendations and didn’t recommend the most expensive glass(which is always a plus when dining at a wine bar) and also slipped in a few sips of some fun blends they had.

A nice escape from the hustle and bustle of Manhattan… A cozy little place with a few outside tables. Being next to a park with little foot traffic and the sound of chirping birds will make you forget you’re in NYC. The wine list is not extensive, but they had some interesting choices to quell my oenophiliac desires. I went with a few glasses of Mauzac(Gotta go with the namesake: I mean, you don’t go to a sushi bar and order a burger). I also tried and recommend the cheese plate.

My boyfriend recently threw me a murder mystery 20s themed birthday party. He called a lot of places, but finally settled on Mauzac. Why? Because they worked with him to customize the most beautiful party. There were amazing hors d’oeuvres. They helped him pick the wine selection, which was delicious. And the bartender, Dee(hi Dee — we heart you!) even dressed up as one of the characters and was part of the mystery. We all had a blast. It was really reasonably priced, and a perfect venue for a small party(we had maybe 20 people). Thank you, Mauzac!

I know I have been away for a long time fellow Unilocalers. My personal life has drowned out my ability to Unilocal creatively, but not my social life or my check ins for those who follow those. That said, I am back and back with a vengeance. Thank you to all who kept me in the social scene as now I will repay you with many reviews in succession, starting with last night’s at Mauzac. I came here at the recommendation of Todd, Nelly’s bestie from Syracuse, who was here a couple of weekends back and said it was great. Dana and I had not seen each other in a while(read: a week), and so we decided to meet halfway between Pratt and my hood, and I remembered what Todd said, and suggested we check it out. We arrived at 730PM, and we both loved the location, right off the park. There are a few tables set outside and the bar is darling, with lovely wine bottles setting the stage. There are also a few private tables inside for those wishing for a more intimate setting. Dana arrived and she was starved, and although I had just demolished a sandwich from Hanco’s 2 hours earlier, I am never one to say no to dinner number 2. We ordered the mussels, which were the special with a glass of wine, the smoked salmon, and the 5 cheese plate. I also ordered a glass of Italian white. The prices struck me as steep for the wine, but I guess since it is foreign wine, the small pours are to be expected. The cheeses were really expertly chosen. I cannot say enough good things about them. For 17 dollars you get 5 excellent choices of 6 on the menu, and you cannot go wrong. I could not decide on a favorite, but since I prefer firmer cheeses, settled on the firm unpasteurized cow cheese from Switzerland(I think, I may be making up what I liked, but anyways they were all great.) The mussels were perfectly prepared, plump and ample, paired with dijon cream sauce and crusty country bread doused with extra virgin olive oil. The smoked salmon was standard, but good quality nonetheless. The service was attentive, and she really paid attention to us being happy with the food and wine. Overall, I was surprised that the bill was not overwhelming, and although they were taking cash only, we left stuffed and pleased. Would definitely be back and recommend it to anyone in the area looking for a low key wine bar for a chilled glass of wine and some cheese.

Wow, the staff is really hit or miss. I took someone with me to my new favorite wine bar tonight, only to encounter another unfriendly server(Sylvia, Heather’s sister). Thanks for the glasses of warm water, with our wine. I think their AC is busted, but the water??? All we needed were tea bags. I just skip the wine bar if I look inside and see either of the sisters behind the bar. I refuse, for the moment, to give up on this nice spot because of them.

Adorable wine place. It’s quiet and relaxing. There’s no hassle like Manhattan — this cute wine bar is perfect for a relaxing night. They have nice selection of wine, but by the glass, they have only 5 kinds or so for each white and red wine. The woman at the bar was very courteous and attentive. Love this low key little bar. I’ll definitely come back. They started branch on weekends, and they take credit card.

Cozy place at an really nice location right next Fort Greene park. The place is really small and has a really nice copper plated bar, it’s candle lit/low intensity glowing light bulbs and is just nice. The wines are, however, a little expensive. Between 10 – 14 dollars a glass, and the waitress didn’t seem too knowledgeable about the wines — she did offer tastes of the different wines before choosing — good. They offer a few plates to go with the wines like cheeses and charcuterie — we just tried the olive bread with olive oil. It wasn’t the greatest but wasn’t expensive either. It was dry and only lightly toasted — mistake. The older the bread gets the more it needs toasting. Instead of serving bread of the loaf type, they should get some good foccacia type bread with a nice crumb and crust. I also think the olive oil could be of a better quality especially because it came with the bread alone. They play really good french kind of jazz I think!!! Good place — small changes will put it in the major league and make it an unbeatable wine bar!

I’ve been to Mauzac twice and each time had a really great experience. It’s a cozy little place — great for a first date. I wouldn’t suggest going here with more than one other person. It’s really small and intimate. The bartenders have always been really nice and super helpful. I was there last night and the bartender brought over four wines for me and my date to taste before we decided on something. We went with a bottle b/c she was so nice and helpful. This place might be out of the way for some(I’m talking to you, Manhattan snobs!), but totally worth the schlep.

I think the proprietor is an ex-marine or simply obsessive-compulsive. It was like we were in his living room under his rules, but as paying guests. My friend tried to move a chair from one table to another and got yelled at. Table service is hit-or-miss depending on this dude’s whims. By the end of the night he was doing that classy thing of running around with a bottle trying to pour us refills on the fly. I haven’t seen that in the, uh, «big city» in awhile. Also, if this place is supposed to be so romantic and intimate, what’s that ATM doing in the corner? It feels more like some man-cave clubhouse than a legit business. A lot of heart, a decent selection, a few missteps.

Stay Away! A cute, pricey, tiny wine bar occupying a space that was used as a storage closet for the business next door. Honestly, I think the wine rack is bigger than the seating area. I am seriously considering claiming this place as my living room because of its proximity to my apt. I love that it is small and dark and not crowded at all(usually weekday evenings). It’s great, but it will only stay great if all of you stay away. It is my new living room afterall :-)

A girlfriend of mine suggested this place, and we tried it out on a Friday evening. Mauzac is intimate and perfect for a date or a quiet night with friends. The prices are decent– 8 to very expensive. I saw a few cheese and meat plates around, but we didn’t try any. The music selection was good and the crowd diverse. I will definitely come again. Happy hour from 4 to 7, I’m curious to know more.

Blink and you’ll miss this cozy, little wine bar located at the West end of Dekalb, right in front of Ft. Greene Park. The interior is warm, albeit nondescript(you guessed it: exposed bricks), with a nice bar and a large window facing the park. A second, smaller, room to the left of the entrance can accommodate a small party(up to 5 – 6 people). Puzzlingly, there is also a second, round bar right in the middle of the main room[1]. The bar takes its name from a variety of white grape of limited geographic distribution that grows in the Gaillac and Limoux regions in the Southwest of France[2]. The only Mauzac wine they had when I visited was a Martial Richard Blanquette de Limoux($ 12/glass; $ 45/bottle), an excellent, dry sparkling white. If you like Cava or Prosecco, you’ll love this wine. The other wine we tried was a Picpoul de Pinet Domanie des Cadastres, Coteaux du Languedoc($ 33/bottle), a very nice dry white, zesty and citrusy, with an acidic finish. The wine list was somewhat compact, with only 5 whites and 5 reds available by the glass. Not too impressive for a wine bar. Moreover, there were only two choices for beer: Fruli($ 8) and La Chouffe($ 9). What made up for the short list, however, was the amazing service. Edgar, the bartender, was unbelievably nice, and let us have a glass of the Picpoul de Pinet Languedoc even if on the menu it was available only by the bottle. Moreover, he also poured us a generous serving of the Blanquette de Limoux to try, and explained us the origin of the name. A nice addition to the neighborhood. A place that shows potential despite a few shortcomings. — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — – [1] I really couldn’t figure out what this second, smaller bar was for, and I can only assume it is a relic of whatever was here before Mauzac opened. [2] Interestingly, Mauzac is also one of the only seven permitted white varieties in Bordeaux wine.

I can’t believe I was this close to being the first to review, but alas, I shall have to settle for being 2nd… Mauzac, named after a white wine grape found in zee south of frawwwnce(bad French accent optional), is an adorable, cozy, comfortable space nestled across the street from Fort Greene Park, and only a few short blocks from the DeKalb Ave Subway(B, Q, R) or Atlantic Terminal. Despite Fulton(G) being the closest as the crow flies, as we all know, if you take the G train, nobody will ever see you again… ever… or you’ll be excruciatingly late. Take the Q and walk. I promise. You will find a welcoming space with tables suitable for couples, a copper bar that welcomes neighborhood locals and visitors alike, and small plates that will comprehensively complement the thoughtful and copious winelist. The music selection was fantastic — jazz, neo-soul, and a sprinkling of classics(including Billie Holiday and Charlie Parker) that soothe the soul… Sali(formerly of Penang in SoHo) takes pride in both the aesthetic and the selection, while Dave(the bartender for the evening) offered me a taste of wines that he thought I would enjoy based on my initial selection, exposing me to some wonderful labels I hadn’t yet had the opportunity to experience. If you’re looking for a great first date spot, a non-pretentious environment to catch up with an old friend, or a comfortable yet sophisticated place to take that friend-with-benefits, choose Mauzac. The Q at DeKalb is express — 2 stops to 14th, 5 stops to Times Square, so the Manhattan-centric and Brooklyn-phobic need not fear being stranded where the sidewalk ends after a delightful evening…
