After decent luck at Mei Hao, a similar warming table joint a few blocks north I decided to give Red Apple a try. It’s the same deal, four dishes plus rice and a soup for $ 4. You pay, then point at what you want. The food is mostly home cooking style dishes. My samples: Red rice wine lees cooked fish — Delicious, but very high«grapple factor» due to the boniness of the fish. Tofu and liver — Great pairing of textures, but way too bland. Chinese cabbage — Super simple, absolutely delicious. Clams in black bean sauce — Mei Hao had taught me not to fear clams from a warming tray, but Red Apple showed me how good they can be. Mild, with the deep chocolate taste of the beans complimenting the clams. They do a great version of this dish here. Overall I’d say Red Apple appears to be nothing special, but if you’re in the mood for clams in black bean sauce boy do they have a deal for you. If I find myself back that’s what I’m going for.
