Really fun store. Had the supplies I was looking for.

I was passing by on a Sunday and noticed the word drafting in the store’s name. I needed some small triangles without an inking edge. At the Dick Blick stores here ALL small triangles have an inking edge. I find this strange. I would have thought that in this age of computers inking drawings had become obsolescent. I returned a few days later. A fellow greeted me as I walked in and asked if he could help. He showed me their triangles. They had many choices with a regular edge. Maybe all had a regular edge. I didn’t find them to be expensive. But it is hard to tell on items that only cost around $ 2.50-$ 3.00 with the price varying by size.

Eh. I love art supplies and I love office supplies so I couldn’t *hate* this place if its employees had poked me with sticks. But I did make a mistake when I came here, and that was trusting that the folks who run the place know anything about what they’re selling. I was looking for a marker or a paint marker that would write on a particular material. I asked one employee«will these write on this?» and he didn’t know so he asked the lady who I think runs the place(Asian lady, early middle age, long hair). She said yes, it definitely would. So I bought the marker and I bought the material. Then I got them home and tried to use them. They didn’t work together. The material was ruined, actually, so I was out the money for both items which I now could not use. I wouldn’t have rated the guy badly for saying he didn’t know, but I am definitely rating the woman badly for so confidently giving me wrong information. So go here if you just want to go on a self-guided tour of paper and yarn and craft paint and educational books and dusty office supplies from days of yore(I bought a package of bright orange«Avery ¼-Inch Round Color Coding Labels» with a 1988 copyright date on the back, because you never know when you might need vintage dots to stick on things). But don’t go here if you want help or advice or accurate info on the products they sell. If my experience is at all representative, they’ll give you whatever answer seems most likely to part you from your money.

After reading lukewarm reviews siting bad service and high prices I mentally prepared myself before walking in. I don’t know what all the kerfuffle is about, I thought THESERVICEWASGREAT. I walked in and the cashier and salesman or manager where standing there as if they had been waiting all morning just for me. I am at the novice level as painting supplies go(first time purchasing art supplies in 20 years) and the salesman asked all the right questions about my project, looked at my notes and presented a few different options, gave his recommendation and helped me pick up everything I needed. The experience was A+++ and walking distance from where I live! I was so enthralled by the store that after finding what I needed I examined every aisle and every crevice. I love this place, will recommend it to all my locals and bring visitors there too! In addition to your basic art and crafting supplies they have paint by numbers! latch hook! rock tumbler! coloring books! paper dolls! stickers! stencils! matting! cross stitch! pot holder looms! So many things that I loved as a kid! I’m so happy to have found this GEM in downtown Brooklyn! Don’t over think it, just go and enjoy!

Its a weird store, but fantastic. I’m amazed it sells enough to pay what must be an exorbitant commercial rent. Just astounding to find a place this cool in a downtown so miserable and stodgy as Brooklyn’s.

i just always need something for something– a sculpture, a costume, paperwork– and I am so glad I can bike over and get things in my area. Actually I just called them to see if they had tiny mirror discs and the cost. Yes, and cheaper than the fabric store. Yeah, once they didnt have something and were short with me about it. Whatever.

So, I’ve decided to take up painting.* No, seriously. Stop laughing. For all you know, I could be the next… I dunno. I suppose I should be able to name a painter if I want to become one, but whatever. In any case, I took out this handy dandy little Unilocal app on my phone, and it told me that I could buy me some art supplies over here. And it was right! I came in looking for paint, paint brushes, canvas and a few other items. The woman behind the counter might as well have been a mannequin for all the help she offered, but in my limited art supply experience, it seemed fairly well-stocked with several options for everything. I also don’t have much to compare the prices to, but judging by some of their exorbitant prices on regular stationery items, there are probably better deals to be had elsewhere(feel free to tell me where, just in case I actually stick with this painting thing). In any case, the total came out a bit higher than I would’ve liked to spend, but you can’t put a price tag on art. That’s a saying, right? __________ *By this I mean my girlfriend has, and I’m along for the ride.

The staff is kinda rude but not if you persevere! They are more friendly than they appear, honest. They do have a good range for a close to home supply shop. And it is true they have more than it seems, behind the counter and around the corners. Do not be intimidated by their apparent unfriendliness, I think she is just bored and unhappy and appreciates friendly people. They have some fabric and textile supplies, more than the average ltd art supply place. They have an amazing collection of dover books! Stickers, colouring books, stained glass, xmas, angels, paper dolls. I love Dover books. They have plastic canvas and embroidery basics. And aida in packs. And felt and feathers.

Not going to lie, this place is EXPENSIVE. but it’s really convenient(for me!) and I’ve thus far had really great customer service experiences. I’m a pretty big home crafter/artist wanna be and every once in a while run out of something. If I don’t want to schlep into the city or farther into Brooklyn, Wc is my go-to supply place. It’s kind of deceptive in terms of the selection because a lot of things are kept behind the counters and semi out of sight, but if you ask they often have what you’re looking for. Again, not necessarily my first choice due to price. but great in a pinch!
