This unique block in Downtown Brooklyn captures the spirit of a neighborhood in transition, where gritty small businesses and sleek new developments intersect, Old New York details abound, and street artists and community activists jump into the fray. The block consists of 13 storefronts that lay empty while development projects stalled. In order to revitalize the community and draw foot traffic back to the area, the block has been turned into an open-air gallery. The signs from the original businesses are all still there, so you can see where there used to be a taco stand, a check-cashing joint, a cell phone store, et cetera, but each façade has been taken over by a different street artist. With depictions of superheroes, mythical creatures, and splashes of bright color everywhere, it’s definitely worth a stop on your next walking tour of Brooklyn.
