sandwich is huge, pork is tender, sauce is flavor, wash it down with a cheerwine ;)

Extremely affordable. Purchased a cheeseburger and a Brisket sandwich and the total was still under 12 $. Place smells amazing and the food is just as good. I don’t care if I try anywhere elese here in Brunswick, this is the place!

We were driving south on I-95 and the Unilocal reviews convinced us to stop by to feed our hungry teenagers. Wow – this place is fantastic! I knew it would be good when I saw several local policemen on line, those guys usually know their chow! The Brunswick Stew – which I had never had before – was amazing, tons of flavor. The ribs were life changing, I’ve never had ribs anywhere near that good. The chicken and brisket was also quite good. My teenage sons are still talking about the ribs, they want to stop by next time we drive south and they want plates of all ribs. The food is already prepared so its very fast for travelers. We stood on the modest line and the friendly staff serves you up as much as you want of each item so its very flexible. The guys behind the counter knew their stuff and took time to explain Brunswick stew to this confused Yankee. Its nothing fancy if you stay: we found our own table, ate from the styrofoam trays or on a paper towel and with plastic forks. Bathroom was reasonably clean and stocked – key for travelers! We headed back to I-95VERY happy!

Well that was way way worth the detour ! We are die hard four rivers fans, this was maybe even better. Smoked pork chop was so delicious and not weighed down with too much salt, most bbq joints just go way overboard. Moist and tender, wish we had gotten two. Pulled pork sandwich had a depth of smokiness and sweetness that was just amazing . Can not find the words to describe the Brunswick stew, it was the highlight of the meal !!! Do not leave there without a quart or two !

A must go place if you’re in the Brunswick Ga area. Family owned and operated, no frills but very good BBQ. I recommend the ribs, brisket, and stew.

As I’m getting ready to write my review, I’m thinking to myself, «What do I not like about this place». OK, I just thought of what I don’t like… This place is way down in Georgia, and I’m in North Carolina! My wife was sitting on the beach at Jekyll Island, and while she relaxed on the beach, I left to get lunch. Once I exited the car at Gary Lee’s, the wonderful BBQ smell put a big smile on my face, and I knew I was in for something good. I got in line, and told the guy behind the counter that it was my first time, and I wanted a «sample» take-out box. I asked for a half smoked sausage, one rib, some brisket for 2 people and some chopped pork. I also got a side of potato salad, baked beans and cole slaw. I also got a large tea($ 1.75), which was very sweet, and tasted great. Let me say that everything we had was very good. I enjoyed it all, but the items that me and my wife agreed were the best, was the brisket, potato salad and beans. The BBQ sauce is also very good. While I was in line to order, one of the locals told me, «no matter what you get, it’s good», and she was right. It’s all good…

We’re just passing thru but read the Unilocal reviews and had to try this place. Oh my goodness!!! The food is incredible. We had to try the Brunswick stew(never had it before); it was loaded with veggies and meat and full of flavor. We added some of the hot sauce that was on the table for an little kick! The ribs were tender and succulent and perfect. Had to try the brisket… oh boy, tender and moist with a perfect pink smoke ring. Got some bread and made a sandwich; melt in your mouth goodness. Loved the BBQ beans full of meat too. While we were there a steady stream of folks came in, mostly for take out. They sell the rub they use(I was told it’s used in everything but the potato salad) and I got a large bottle to take home. I doubt my smoked butt or brisket will be as good, but it’s something to aim for.

This is one of those places where the staff knows exactly what to do they are the cardiologists of the meat world they are the politicians of the pork, they are the gods of the grill, barbecue grill that is. They run this place like a tight ship and the food is so good, I can’t wait to come back for more. So staff is above stellar, they’re fantastic, they’re kind, and they’re above par when it comes to knowledge of what’s barbecue and what’s not. The food, well it’s unbelievable. The chicken wings that were smoked were excellent the chicken wings that were grilled were excellent the brisket was excellent the sausage was excellent, the ribs were excellent. And you could order as much or as little as you want which is unbelievable. Because you can piecemeal a great meal together and then you better buy a piece of that cake because that’s excellent too. I can’t wait to come back here again just so I can try more and more of everything, I didn’t get a pork sandwich however my friends raved about it. I didn’t get the chicken, but my friends raved about it. I did get the sausage, the ribs, the brisket. And, my sides were potato salad, it was basic but it was good. And then their cake was incredible. Great job guys.

My brother had heard good things about this place but never had a chance to stop by because they close early on Saturdays and aren’t open at all on Sundays. So I jumped in to Silver Fox and sped all the way there from Darien — and arrived 2 minutes before closing — and I must say — Gary Lee and his family were friendly and acted thrilled to see me despite my arriving so close to closing time. Lol. The food was delicious and Gary Lee(Junior) was full of home spun wisdom. His twin boys(Corey and Jack — I think) were epitome of friendly, charming Southern gentlemen. I bought a pound of sausage, a pound of brisket, a full rack of ribs, 2 burgers, 2 half chickens, potato salad, coleslaw, Brunswick stew and baked beans. See photos. The brisket, burgers, chicken and coleslaw were the crowd pleasers! My family was well pleased — the only reason I didn’t give them five stars is because nothing tasted smoked at all. I noticed in other photos you can see a nice pink smoke ring on the brisket. I don’t know if they no longer smoke their meats or whether they just didn’t have anything smoked that day. Even with that, if I had to compare the two — I would have to say I prefer their barbeque /BBQ to Southern Soul.

You must try this place. Excellent bbq. Possibly the best I’ve ever had. A very unassuming building. Don’t let that stop you. Eat in. Take out. Clearly customers were local. Sides are all good. The only negative is they put way too much pulled pork on their sandwiches. Ha Ha Ha

Gary Lee’s IS southern BBQ at its best! Take exit 29 off I95, travel west on 82 about 2 miles, it sits on your left. Yeah, that’s it, don’t let the crowded parking lot scare you away, there’s plenty of parking to the side and absolutely all the seating you need on the inside. Grab some chips, order up a BNQ sandwich with side of baked beans and tater salad. Fetch yourself a tea, lemonade, or soda, grab a seat a prepare to ENJOY! Take a pork butt home!

We stopped in on a long drive back from Orlando due to weather conditions and cancelled flights. This place has dang good pork and a really unique bbq sauce. I’m assuming family owned and a perfect example of what backyard bbq should really taste like. I might have thought we were in the middle of nowhere when we stopped, but everyone from nowhere was here. The place was packed! If I’m ever back this way I will definitely be going back for seconds.

What a treat! We were driving from Charlestou to Saint Augustine and wanted some Brunswick Stew, in Brunswick of course. We ordered a dozen wings, 2 iced teas and 2 bowls of Brunswick Stew, total bill $ 14. I wish we could have tasted everything, it all looked great, especially the brisket. I was impressed with the Brunswick Stew. It was a tomato based stew with notes of tart vinegar or lemon, something sweet, Lima beans, corn, onion and plenty of Gary Lee’s delicious smoky pulled pork and bacon. The wings were smoky and sauced with a house concoction. The meat pulled from the bone and the flavor was outstanding. They gave us blue cheese, but it really did not go with the sauce. The ribs were served with two slices of yellow bread, which were a great vehicle for sopping up the tangy sauce. This is clearly a meat market, they had stacks of beautiful 3″ rib eyes and whole slabs of beef in the case. Great lunch stop! I hope they are open on our way back to Charleston.

What is it about little shacks off the interstate in Georgia that garner so much attention? I don’t know if I’m going to trust Unilocal so whole-heartedly anymore. At least not on any of the islands. Originally meant to be a head to head battle, we had a late entrant in our quest for BBQ on our recent trip to Jekyll & St. Simons Islands. Personally I think we should have kept it a duke out between the original two fighters. The pulled/chopped pork sandwich had plenty of meat, but the sauce was nothing special and the standard store bought hamburger bun was kinda boring. My husband sampled a rib(yes, a single rib) and while it was passable it was missing some of the smoke flavor. He did enjoy the Brunswick stew and would order that again. It became quite obvious that Gary’s business is probably big in the take out arena. Several customers came in to place and/or pick up called in orders. There were tables to sit at and enjoy your meal, but it was a very odd set up being seated amongst the shopping aisles of what appears to possibly have started as a quick market/gas station market when it first opened.

What a gem! After scouring the web for things to do in the area, I decided to make getting to Gary Lee’s a priority. I heard it was THEBEST bbq so I couldn’t miss it. Gary Lee’s Market is a tiny grocery store with a few tables and a hot deli. To a passersby they’d never know this is credited as some of the best bbq in south Georgia. Prices are fair, portions are big and the line never stopped forming at Gary Lee’s Market. Gary has been doing this for 42 years. They don’t advertise, word is spread of Gary Lee’s amazing bbq through the satisfied mouths of visitors. He said they go through about 300 lbs. of meat a day. His son Corey works alongside him. I settled on a couple ribs(yep, you can buy it by the pound) and a pulled pork sandwich. It also came with a side of even more bread. All I can say is… mmmm. The sandwich wasn’t nearly as memorable as those fall off the bone, smoky, peppery, delicious ribs. I should have gotten more. I should have bought some for the road. I should go back. As I gathered my food, my large iced tea and the courage to find a seat, this sweet couple asked me to join them. Christia and Jeremy were celebrating their 16th wedding anniversary at the Hostel in the Forest, a place I had actually made a reservation for, but since it was so cold and rainy, I opted for sturdier shelter. Gary Lee’s reminds me of my hometown’s gas station where the locals come for a a bite to eat and to drink coffee for hours. Everyone was very welcoming and helpful and didn’t say a thing about me taking pictures galore.
