Mattie’s Texas Red Hots

I wasn’t really impressed by this place for breakfast. The service was slow, drinks were $ 2.00 and of course no free refills. The pancakes weren’t all that great. I’ll go back only if someone is paying.

The main reason why I come to this restaurant is because I have many fond memories as a child coming here after church and enjoying a nice lunch with my family. Now that I am older I can come here by myself or with my friends when they come in from out of town and want something wholesome to eat. Usually I ordered chicken fingers and fries, so my review may not be representative of the entire restaurant and all that they have to offer. The chicken fingers and fries are mediocre. They are better than good but they are quite spectacular. The french fries are always cooked very well and taste great with ketchup and salt. everyone who works there is always smiling and willing to accommodate you and make sure that you are having a good meal. I will continue coming here every once in a while.

Those who eat at Mattie’s don’t end up Fatties because the prices are Heart Attackies, say can I have my change back-​please, and you won’t get your change back easy.

So I’ve tried Mattie’s, and I’ve tried Matties-​On-​Site at Larkin (which is at Larkin Tuesdays), and I’ve been utterly disappointed both times.
The hot dogs at Mattie’s are very average. The service seems more like something you’d get at a car dealership, and the prices make you think you’re going to eat gourmet food. Oh my goodness, it’s so bland and disappointing.
Then there’s the fact that comparing with my friend how bad the food was, she mentioned that she was ripped off here. They overcharged her significantly and wouldn’t refund her. Then I find out it’s also happened to others. For that reason, it is demoted from a 3 to a 2.

The food was cold and service was terrible! The gentleman charged my card the wrong amount and then argued with me that he didn’t need to void the charge and that the company would take care of it. Well… they didn’t! They in fact charged me twice. The bank requests that because it was their error they try to fix it. Their response was to just have the bank «give me my money back» even though they were the ones who charged my account twice. They then said instead of refunding my card they would send me a check!!! This establishment is extremely unprofessional and a scam!

This was my second visit to Buffalo (my first was only just July 2011) and also my second visit to Mattie’s. From the outside, it’s just another storefront with street-​only parking. Nothing fancy. As with many «hole on the wall» food spots, it’s the food and not the looks that attract customers. You can tell they serve their own and don’t get many out of towners such as myself, but are kind nonetheless. It’s not one of those «our specials are…» restaurants. You get a menu, you don’t ask what’s recommended (because if you come here, you were already told what to get), you order your food and talk with friends, and then you leave. It’s one of those «I was told that you have great steak subs so I decided to stop in» kind of restaurants. The down-​home cooked food is excellent. I’ve sampled their fried catfish, grits, greens, mac and cheese, cheese eggs and hash. All were delicious. They allow you to split the bill if you come with a group like we did, and they take V, MC, AMEX, DIS, Cash as payment. I’ve only traveled to Buffalo for weddings and I do not foresee myself returning to Buffalo in the near future, especially on this side of the town, but if I do, I’m sure my friends and I will make yet another stop at Mattie’s. It’s worth the trip if you are close by.
