Friendly helpful staff/good food and beer/music venue We went to see our favorite band on Saturday night. The sun had set so we went directly inside. High wood ceilings give it a warm open feel. Metal tanks on view behind the bar in open brewing area. Washed up in the bathroom and was bombarded by very drunk very loud women… at 7pm. Maybe they were staying at the Inn? We shared a cheese pizza. Crust was floppy not crispy but not undercooked. Cheese was good and not too salty like take out pizza is. I had a coffee stout, Santelli. Creamy head, delicious coffee taste. He had the cream ale, light color easy to drink and perfect with pizza. Really, we went to see our friend’s band and The Grist was the venue. We were very happy to find good food and beer as a bonus. The only complaint I have is the fruit flies. Seem to be ever present in brewing rooms. We would like to come back and see the place on a summer day. We can see ourselves having a flight out on the patio and enjoying the view.

We zipped passed this place on the way to Two Goats Brewing and when we found out that Two Goats doesn’t open until later we turned around and came here. The establishment is an open concept that easily flows from being inside to being outside. The décor is very simple. The staff is very friendly and very knowledgeable about their food and beer. We each ordered our own flight and split the mozzarella pesto pizza with soppressata on top. The pizza was very tasty and you can tell that all of their ingredients are very fresh. We ended up taking home a growler of their seasonal Fippeny Apple Graff. I will visit Grist Iron again if ever in the area and highly recommend that you add this gem to your itinerary.

This place is like part restaurant/part drinking establishment/part adult playground. Our group of 14 came here to relax from a day of hiking and in preparation for the next day’s wine trail extravaganza. I liked that we could just seat ourselves, either outside on the brewery’s porch or inside, where a live band played. We chose outside because of the nice weather, the beautiful, sprawling property, and the proximity to corn hole! Grist Iron seems to offer a nice selection of local wines, but since we planned on sipping many of those the next day, I decided to try a flight of 5 beers instead. You write your choices down on a little card and then deliver it to the bar [along with any food orders], where the flight is prepared. I ordered: *smoked vanilla porter: my favorite! Smoky-tasting things are the best, as are vanilla porters, so this was right up my alley. They definitely didn’t skimp on the smoke! *cream of the crop cream ale: cream ales currently don’t seem to be that popular and while they sound delicious, I think everyone thinks of Genny Cream Ale which perhaps serves to sour one’s perception of the style. I decided to try Grist Iron’s version anyway and was pleasantly surprised. It was a lot sweeter than I had expected. *fippeny apple graff: An apple beer, not an apple cider, mind you. Crisp and little tart– reminded me of a green apple. Way better than Red’s Apple Ale, which is a similar concept but probably one of the worst beers I’ve ever had. *bruiser-black and blueberry porter: not one of the more memorable tastes. For dinner, we ordered the mozzarella and spinach-basil pesto pizza, which I thought was just okay. It was a good size, but a big portion of the slices were made up solely of mozzarella, so it lacked in complexity of flavor. It needed an additional ingredient to spice it up a bit. However, I adored the corn chowder(bacon, blistered peppers and cilantro cream). The corn tasted really fresh and sweet. A perfect warm soup dish for the early fall that makes use of still-fresh summery ingredients. I also sampled my friend’s roaster baby bell peppers with jalapeño cream cheese and panko crubms. So good! Just a note for girls with tiny bladders: you’ll do a double take when trying to figure out which is the women’s room and which is the men’s. Then you’ll figure it out, but get confused all over again as soon as you enter the correct bathroom. You’re in the right place. Just know this.
