I hired Meto Mechanical to install a new furnace, air conditioner and humidifier for my house. The best way I can sum up this experience is it made me feel like this is the first time they’ve done this before. The install took from about 9am until around 7:30pm on a Friday. I would have expected(and later confirmed by the owner) that they should have told me if they were going to run past about 5:30pm, but they never did. When they were ready to leave, the one individual they left behind to finish up was unable to explain how everything functioned and the thermostat was left in a non-working state. I pointed this out and was told that he couldn’t help me with that and I would have to call. So at this point, they left me with a non-working thermostat on my brand new furance, AC and humidifier install. I called and the foreman came back and replaced the thermostat fairly quickly. They also left a lot of mess around where the new AC unit was installed outside that they never cleaned up. About a week later, I noticed a gas smell from around the furnace. I took some soapy water and found a pretty significant gas leak on one of the lines they worked on. I called them out again to get this fixed and they didn’t seem very apologetic. At the same time, I noticed that the blower on the new unit seemed to be working much harder than what was described to me. I asked them to look at this as well and it ended up that some of the baffles in my ducts were partially closed, which caused the blower to ramp up speed. I felt like this is something they should have checked before they left. I also felt like this was something I had to point out, even though the owner promised me they would do a full post-install check upon their return trip. Lastly, the electrician they sub-contracted out to wanted to do an inspection of the electrical work before they signed off on the permit. I had to take yet more time off of work to accommodate this and I’m not sure why it wasn’t done on the day of the install. Upon his check, the electrician found that almost all of the electrical work was done incorrectly and had to be re-done. Now I had to take more time off work to let their electrician come and re-do the work the Metro guys had done incorrectly. There was an improperly sized breaker for the AC unit, improperly done conduit work and some improper work around the external AC unit. The switch that was wired at the furnace itself was also incorrect and had to be redone. Something about the box the switch was in not being proper. I had several conversations with the owner about this and he really tried to downplay the problems. He told me I was making a mountain out of a mole hill in regards to the gas leak and he gave me the impression that the re-doing of the electrical was pretty common. He also lied to me several times about the problems found with the electrical and the work being permitted and signed off by the city when it hadn’t been. He also told me several times he would mail me copies of the permits and he never did. Lastly, there was an energy rebate that they filed incorrectly and I had to work with WE energies to correct. At the end of the day, I think I got a quality unit that is installed correctly. However, the amount of pain, stress, follow-up and time off work required to get to that point was frustrating to say the least. I have no idea what’s going on at that place, but I’ve never had a more frustrating experience with a contractor before in my life.

Over the past nine years that I’ve owned my house, I’ve called at least five different HVAC companies to perform tune-ups on my furnaces and a/c units. They’ve all done a solid job, but Metro Mechanical(formerly Franklin Mechanical) has outshined the others. The techs seem to really know their stuff and also provide tips to help me save money on repairs and my utility bills. Wednesday night, one of the a/c units broke down. I called them Thursday morning and they were able to squeeze me in Thursday afternoon. The tech came, opened the a/c unit outside and diagnosed the problem in less than a minute, then fixed it in about 5 minutes. The total repair bill ended up being a third of what I expected. Their tune-up charges a a little higher than the others, but I keep calling them and paying a little more because they’ve really earned my trust. These days, it’s hard to find truly trustworthy contractors, so I appreciate the staff at Metro Mechanical.
