I go here frequently, every week or every other week for over a year and have never been sick after eating their food, so I don’t get how so many people are saying they had food poisoning… Prices are reasonable, not cheap but definitely lower than some other sushi places in the area. It’s a great local place I can count on for providing friendly service and pretty reliable quality. They can get pretty busy sometimes which will be a longer wait, such as on holidays, but I’ve never been bothered by waiting a little bit longer for some great food :) they have a loyalty program which contributes 5% of your purchase to your card and once you reach $ 50 you get a $ 50 gift card!

We chose Sumo because 1. It is very close to our home. 2. It’s the only sushi place I have really eaten at 3. I was dying to try out their Udon and shrimp tempura. Excellent choice by the way! Good service… tried a variety of different sushi rolls and really enjoyed the company.

Went with 4 people at 11am and all of us got food poisoning I’m pretty sure it was old tuna that they had. Called the manager and he didn’t give us a refund he told me to call his insurance. At that point I just gave up. The food poisoning was so bad I had to take my girlfriend to the hospital and I was puking and had diarrhea for a day and a half. Her mom and dad still won’t eat sushi with us.

I went there a few months ago and liked it. Happy hour is awesome! Really liked the flavor, fish tasted fresh and the price was good. Was able to get almost 2 rolls for the price of one with happy hour. Environment was fun and servers were nice.

The reason I’m giving it four stars is they’re reasonably priced, good quality and they really give you a lot for the money in terms of the portion. My standard roll is a customized yellowtail roll with the rice on the outside and plenty of jalapeño in the center. For $ 5 you get a really big 8 piece roll like this with a lot of yellowtail inside. I’ve paid way more for these customized rolls at other places and they weren’t as big as these. I’ve only been here once but I’ll definitely be back and will likely become a regular.

Happy hour Monday-Friday, everyday from 9-close is reverse happy hour. Food is great and prices are cheap. It’s always packed. Servers are quick and they try to accommodate everyone even when wait times get a little long. My favorite sushi place in Ventura.

Terrible service and food. Waitresses act like you are bothering them when you ask for service. Food is not authentic Japanese food. Order the noodles and you get Top Ramen. Stay away

Had dinner with a big group last night. Food was ok. Service was TERRIBLE!!! The bill was split into three, and our third of the bill was $ 169.06, including 18% gratuity. I gave our server $ 170, and asked for a quick second as I scoured for 6 cents. She took off with the rest of our check, as we took a group picture. As we started to leave, I walked up to the counter/register, and asked our server for my change. Now, I don’t know if there’s any unspoken rule about servers and their tips because I’m not, nor have been a server before, but I think it’s just courtesy, for a server to ask the guest/s if they still want or need their change, even if it’s five dollars, one dollar, or even just a single penny… after all, it’s still THEIR money! Anyway, as I asked for my one dollar change, she quickly replied, «Oh! I didn’t think you still need your change back…» I was so tempted to respond with a real witty and a smart ass answer, but instead, I took my ONEDOLLAR change, and politely thanked her, and the owners or managers beside her. Great customer service. You have been trained well! I sure hope you don’t do that to anyone else anymore…

Great Sushie! My favorite place to go. Wount go anywhere else the food is great. I go atleast once a month. All the waiters are nice. This sumo is not the same as the Ventura Sushie that one is horrible service. Same name but not the same people.

The sushi here was fantastic. Really spot on and with a diverse selection. Only rated it 4⁄5 because the dinner meal(chicken & steak) tasted like something out of a frozen dinner. Drenched in sauce and of poor quality. That being said, the sushi experience was completely different — very delicious!

We came here to celebrate my sons 18th birthday. Food was good. But as my fellow Unilocaler mentioned service is lacking. They have a big menu with lots to choose from and daily happy hour specials. Service was friendly but Very slow service and we had to ask for forks at least twice. I also had to request was wasabi and ginger. My sons dish came out last and all the other food came out at different times. Before ordering we asked about the yaki soba and the waitress described it as a soup with broth. When it arrived last to the table it was a noodle dish. Not at all what she had described. We had 3 combo plates ordered at our table and everyone was happy with their food. I had the pleasure roll. I enjoyed it very much! The birthday boy had the lobster roll and he enjoyed it. I would probably return for that pleasure roll.

Came here for late dinner at 9:20 and they said sorry we are closed. I said your time on Google, Unilocal and your door say 10! The lady probably owner said sorry we’re closed… The last few times I’ve been here service has been horrible with rude waiters. I will never be back here again.

Came here at 9:15pm and they said they are closed. When their sign is posted for 10pm. I hope they get fined for falsely advertising their work hours. Also, I have been here before and the service sucks. Horrible employees don’t care about the customers. The food is not that great either. Go to another sushi restaurant. Don’t come here!!!

My boyfriend and I love this place. After having been to a couple other sushi spots, this is really our go to place. The service is usually consistent even when it is a little busy. Our personal favorite is the $ 15.99 sushi combo. It comes with salad, soup, and we pick the 4 pcs of sushi with the salmon sashimi. This place also has the absolute best albacore I’ve ever had. My only form of improvement would be to expand the happy hour menu a bit. Otherwise it’s great.

I use to come here when I was in high school and remember the prices were affordable. I came in and ordered 4 handrolls to go. The total was $ 20 for simple handrolls which is on the higher end compared to other sushi restaurant. They said it would take 15 mins for our order to be ready, we waited for 40 minutes… Turns out, when I asked about it, our order was sitting on the counter the entire time and they forgot to give it to us.

Sumo Sushi is the best bang for your buck lunch spot in Camarillo. For their lunch options: $ 10.95 for a fresh sushi roll option or $ 12.95 for a premium roll option. Each comes with salad, miso soup, and your choice of 4pcs assorted sushi, or California roll, or spicy tuna roll. Whichever you choose, you will get full. Even on my most HANGRY days, I will begin to tap out halfway through my sushi roll. Maybe next time, I’ll pass on the soup. They also got bento boxes where you can choose a 2-combo or 3-combo. Same price as the sushi lunch specials. Not too crowded, so there’s hardly ever a wait. No complaint about the staff or food. We are weekly regulars.

This review is delayed by a few weeks but I was just reminded of my experience so I’m writing it down. Normally I don’t write a lot of reviews but im going to start. I don’t come here often. I used to eat here when it was under the previous ownership when I was younger. Actually had friends work here in high school a long time ago. But recently I’ve been there two times and both times I’ve had the same issues to varying degrees. Maybe 5 months ago, I ate with my dad here for dinner. Service was slow bc they were somewhat busy, but that wasn’t the problem. I got bad food poisoning. Within 10 minutes of leaving, I went across the way to trader joes to pick up some groceries, and I immediately ducked into their bathroom. It was bad… I won’t go into the details. I called Sumo right after to let them know what happened and they sorta apologized. But not really. About 1 month ago, I went again thinking that I would just give them another chance. Things happen. I actually did a pickup /to go order this time. Again after 10 – 15 min of eating the food, I didn’t feel that great. Def not the same level of horror but still. When I called them to let them know, the girl didn’t even really care, so I asked for a manager. The manager said nothing like this has happened before — but uh… it happened to me a few months ago! She also said that maybe I’m not used to eating that fish or whatever — but I eat sushi alllllll the time just not usually in Camarillo. Needless to say, not going back. I tried to give it another chance, but not worth it to me. Sorry :(I just hope this makes them more aware of the situation and maybe one day far in the future, I will try again.

This was a late night stop for us. Looking for a good quality dining option in Camarillo after 9pm is a very challenging task. Sumo stays open later than most, so that’s how we ended up here. The service was friendly but distracted as we had to regularly get up and wander the restaurant to find our waitress, who was always apologetic. The sushi was good — it didn’t wow us but then again we didn’t get sick or anything either. They forgot about a part of our order and started to close, we had to remind them about it and again — they were very sweet and apologetic about it. In the end we had a decent late night(9:20−10pm) meal for a decent price… in fact that’s about the perfect word. «Decent» as in «eh, yea okay if it’s after 9 I guess so».

One of the best sushi spots in camarillo hands down. We are definitely regulars here making it every other week for sure. This place used to be so so but under the new management we’ve seen a complete 180* on the sushi, it’s freshness & serving size that we now find eating here to be one of our favorites. Staff: 5 Stars Everyone we encounter here is beyond friendly & welcoming. Servers are fast & always offer great suggestions. The sushi chefs are friendly and can crank out some sushi fast! There are just too many things here to recommend, we’ve yet to find a roll we didn’t like. Their ½ off sushi menu is perfect if you want to try a lot of different things & not break the bank, on the other hand their speciality rolls are where it’s at! Most are about $ 11 a piece but worth it they are so tasty! I also love their take-out option here. No matter how much food we call in it’s always been guaranteed to be done in 10 – 15 mins. How can you beat that? Super fast & they always get the order right, a great service for those who are rushing for a quick no hassle dinner.
