Awesomeness stacked on more awesomeness. I’ve taken my daughter’s twice and it is the only time they will willingly sit in a line outside of Disney World. They sell out of the popular things the later you get there, go early!

I kept hearing about this donut cart that is only open on Sunday’s. I woke up this morning and that it the first thing that came to mind after living in Cambridge now for 3 months. My wife and I arrived to the cart that is very old fashioned(in a awesome way). It is clear that this has been around for a while and is a tradition in Cambridge. We ordered half a dozen donuts to bring back for the kids. WOW are we impressed. I am always willing to help and support and local business. Everyone in town and in line are extremely friendly and are quick to chat up a conversation while waiting in line. I didn’t get a chance to try a glazed donut because they were out. Next time I will come a bit earlier.

This is by far the most important stop you can make for any trip through the area. Bring cash, and show up early with your own cup of coffee, you will be standing in line for a bit. Simply the best, most decadent, delicious, and wonderful doughnuts and pastries you can find in the area. Made fresh with ingredients from their own farm(when possible), always with a varying specialty. Every visitor that comes to see us has to have these doughnuts. My favorite so far is the maple bacon, the Italian cream, and the apple butter filled. But the all time favorite is the glazed, and you have to have one. If you see a tray of them come out, your decision is made. Sunday Morning, if you are in Cambridge, this is where you should be.

Way back in the day, my entire family would traipse into the old King’s Bakery shop on Main Street in Cambridge — just about the only place my grandmother, a true master of the culinary arts, endorsed us going for a bite to eat outside her home. The bakery itself is long gone, but the otherworldly smells, outrageously good tastes, and overwhelmingly gracious hospitality live on at the King’s Bakery cart that sits like a beacon of bliss at the end of a driveway at the west end of town. If you are in or near Cambridge on a Sunday morning, there’s no other place to be. We bought an indulgent array of fresh doughnuts, assuring ourselves the opportunity to taste test, compare, and rate them against one another. Mostly we just needed an excuse for excess. It was hard to remain objective as each bite sent us soaring further towards a sugar-saturated paradise. No two doughnuts tasted similar, with subtle but important variations in the dough flavor and consistency, the glaze or frosting, the shape, and the type of filling(if any). This made the taste-testing extravaganza even more interesting. It’s safe to say the(six) doughnuts we tried ranged from«A» to «A+» on a conventional grading scale — painstakingly, I arrived at the conclusion that my favorites were the cream-filled Bismarks and the maple-frosted glazed. Everything about King’s Donut Cart seems exactly right, the best of small-town living, neighborly camaraderie, and entrepreneurial determination. Where else can you go to interact with half of a town, willing to wait eagerly on someone’s front lawn for fresh pastry trays lined with the bounty from an in-home, commercial-scale bakery oven? Amen.

OK, Cambridge peeps! I get it! I was told about this bakery cart about 2 years ago and today was my first visit. What a gem. All freshly baked pastries, donuts, fritters, croissants and some other stuff that I can’t remember… but I went to hell in a hand basket and sampled the following; –Chocolate glazed donut: Fluffy, not greasy… best I’ve ever had. (Ok…caveat…I maybe eat one donut per year… I can’t indulge in such sweetness or I wouldn’t get out the door…) –Apple fritter: All I can say is… OMG. I’m a slave to anything chocolate normally… and I’m not usually a fan of raisins in my pastries… but this decadent, amazing fritter is a staple for the King’s Bakery cart. Now I understand. I’ve converted. –Cinnamon roll: Outstanding. No other words needed. –Jelly Donut: VERY good(but I’m not a big fan of jelly donuts… I just took a bite of someone else’s…). They have a fantastic selection for such a small cart… from what I understand, they’re only there on Saturday and Sunday mornings. Depending on how busy they are, it’s get ‘em while you can… they were already sold out of twists by the time we got there(around 10am). Prepare to indulge… the King family does it right!

It is my most sincere pleasure to be the first to review this absolutely stunning institution in Cambridge, NY. I am troubled that no words I can write could do any sort of justice to this wondrous little bakery cart that sits on West Main, but I will describe it regardless. The world must know about what King Bakery does. Every Sunday and Monday morning, the King family produce astonishingly delicious donuts and baked goods from the bakery/kitchen of their stately home. As soon as trays of these wondrous creations are done, they’re walked out to a small, burgundy cart set up right at the roadside where they are sold. The Kings churn out apple fritters, bismarcks, and filled donuts, as well as apple pie bars and other delights. It is a labor of love, and this love is apparent in every bite you take. Something as simple as a glazed donut is bright and flavorful, with a great consistency and a perfect layer of icing. But the more complex items(like those fritters and apple bars) showcase the skill of this baking clan even more — nuanced balances of spices and sweetness, amazing textures, wonderfully fresh ingredients. The locals are quite aware of this little gem, and the lines can stretch ten or fifteen back as the residents of Cambridge, NY know that the Kings will sell out by mid-afternoon. Though this idyllic berg boasts breathtaking views of the Green Mountains and serene and endless farmland, the most beautiful snapshot you can take is one of the cupcakes and donuts sitting in neat rows waiting to be eaten by hungry and appreciative customers. What you see when you look at King Bakery is what makes this little corner of the world so good — local people doing something they love and sharing it with the rest of their town, without fuss and without fame. Sitting in Cambridge is a slice of perfection, and its very existence reminds us that magic can be found in something as common as waiting in line with your neighbors for something sweet.

We almost drove off the road when saw the little wagon. Donut? Yes, please. We stood in line, watching a fresh batch being walked up from the house. The glazed donuts are just perfect. Substantial, yet light. Heavenly.
