I have been involved in the adult FMC hockey program at the Simoni Rink for the last 3 years the place is clean they have a tiny little pro shop where you can get your skates sharpened and buy hockey tape etc, they also have a big area where you can watch the hockey games or whatever is taking place on the ice and stay warm. They don’t have a snack bar but do have vending machines, i do wish the locker rooms were a lot warmer in the winter time it can be very cold getting dressed for a hockey game, also the showers sometimes the water is either very cold or very hot ?? overall not a bad rink.

This rink is run by the FMC Ice Sports and so the website is here: I’ve been a few times. They do youth and adult hockey plus open skate, although I don’t believe they had figure skating lessons. During the hockey season, I think they had hockey lessons. MIT’s Media Lab used to have weekly practice/scrimmage and also the MIT Women’s Hockey Club and MIT Alumni Club, but I don’t think it’s been as frequent. It’s a pretty big rink with okay parking. There is quite a bit of parking around the rink and in the adjacent parking lot. The current rates are: $ 5 for skate rental, $ 5 for public skate, and $ 230 for 50 minutes of ice time. Not too bad. I did notice that the rink was cold but I wasn’t a spectator.

The staff here is really nice and it’s a pretty big arena but not a great place to have an event. We came here to see a roller derby bout and felt like the arena was super cold and the seats were really uncomfortable, I mean we weren’t expecting anything phenonmenal but a little better than that. We also could not hear anything that the announcer was saying b/c the accoustics were so bad the space could use a little more modernization and some touch ups to things like the seats, lights, and sound system and I think it would be a way better place to go see a game.

I take weekly ice hockey classes here, on Monday nights, as part of the FMC ice sports program and also play organized pickup right after the class. I spend over two hours of my day there, every week and this rink is pretty good overall. Let’s start with the facilities: my only complaint is that the locker rooms aren’t all that warm and a bit small but they are clean and don’t smell which is a big plus and unlike a lot of other rinks I’ve been to. The ice itself is pretty well maintained and doesn’t suffer from too many bad spots. There’s no bumps or softer spots either. The lighting is good and even and the boards are stiff and netted all around which keeps the pucks inside. The overall temperature inside is much lower than in most rinks making for a more solid sheet of ice. However it will also cause spectators to freeze to death… A tradeoff that I actually think is awesome because I’d rather skate on better ice than see my buddies watch me skate from the stands… All in all the place is pretty good, with easy parking, a clean, solid sheet of ice and decent facilities. What more could one really need? A vending machine maybe? They have three.
