Went last night to enjoy the phat beats of DJ Evaready and raise a toast to a sometimes-beloved sometimes-not loungy-lounge that is the ER. Jaegerbombs? Really? No, you’re not going to guess my name. And my lovely friend here does not look like Amy Poehler. Not even going to guess what’s gone down on this oriental rug. Gin + ginger? Brillz! What to weeeeear. Does it even matter? This is Central Square, all you scenesters. No cover before 10, ladies! (And tip your barkeep) – We’ve had some good times, ER, but the lounge scene is no more. It’s time for a new look, and I see that you’re ready, too.

I never knew that there was a place in Boston called«The Enormous Room», but I can tell you that it’s really not even close to being«enormous». Maybe that’s why it’s so charming. The room is long and fairly narrow, and is situated above Central Kitchen(a fine eatery). The outside perimeter is lined with couches, tables and pillows, but beware of the couches that aren’t really couches! My knee took a digger on the«fake» couch on the right side of the bar. I arrived at around 9pm on a Friday night and it was pretty empty — and I was pretty pumped. We got a place on a «fake» couch that was right by the bar. Perfect. Until 10pm rolled around and it became quite crowded. At least there was a fairly good dance scene and waitress service with food and drinks, although there really isn’t much room for dancing with the way they pack people in this Enormous Room. The beer list was mediocre and I’m not sure that I would specifically come back to visit The Enormous Room. However, if I was already in the area, I might be inclined to stop in…

I’ve been to the enormous room on several occasions. Last week there was a good mumbaton dj there who rocked it. It was a Wednesday and the space was pretty empty, but I came there to dance so whatever. The reason I’m giving this two stars is because you never quite know if the space will be full or not, what type of music you’ll get or if the service will be any good. The bartender/waitress last Wednesday were rude. She threw out my full drink at about 1am and when I told the bartender, he called the girl over and she denied it. Mind you, she had just tried to take the same drink less than 5 minutes ago, but just waited until my back was turned this time. The bartender didn’t even make me another one and just shrugged his shoulders. I could see if I was a boisterous drunk who caused problems, but that wasn’t the case, and when drinks are close to $ 11, I think it would make anyone upset. I would return on the strength of the djs, but the bartender and wait staff need to work on their attitude. They seem to rotate every few months though, which is why I won’t diss the place completely. I’ve had great service in the past. Another point to make is that this is more of a chilled, lounge type atmosphere on weekdays and can stay pretty empty.

A small space — contrary to the name — but fun for dancing and drinks with friends. I’ve only ever been here on Friday or Saturday nights so I can’t speak for it’s after-work or weekday atmosphere, but on the weekends it’s a party! They play a good variety of music and there are different platforms you can dance on so that everyone isn’t crowded onto a single dance floor. And there are couches all around the place for people that feel like sitting down instead. The line for the bar and bathroom can grow pretty long, but if you manage to snag a place at one of the couches early on in the night you can get a waiter to bring you drinks even after you start dancing. Definitely not the place to go if you’re looking to sit down and have a conversation, but if you want to go out, pay minimal cover($ 5 — much cheaper than a lot of the bigger«clubs» in Boston) and listen to a good mix of dance music, I definitely recommend it.

A chill cocktail lounge, very hip and too popular for its own good. Gets very crowded in the weekend, but not a bad spot for a weekday night drink.

I was just at Enormous last night. I highly recommend checking out this place, but watch out for Friday and Saturday nights as they have a cover. I was there on a Tuesday, it was pretty chill. I loved the key lime pie martini, I’m going to try to learn how to make it myself! The lounge style seating is pretty nice if you’re looking for a chill downtempo night with friends.

Upstairs from Mass Ave… The Enormous room is a place to dance, in a cramped space, with 20-something MIT students who don’t know what to do but jiggle their hands and stare at pretty girls. The drinks are good? Wait, I had a cheap beer. There are these wooden loungey seats next to the dance floor you can sit at, or um, get up on to dance even more. Come here late, after you’ve had a couple rounds at Green Street or after you’ve danced with everyone at the Middlesex… and dance like you just don’t care. P. S. The DJ is ADD. Can never keep a good song on for longer than two minutes. Keep my Timbaland on brotha!

Maybe I’m too old, maybe I’m claustrophobic, but Enormous Room it is not. I get it, it’s irony, but irony isn’t enough to make me enjoy standing in a room so packed I’d rather be on the green line at Park Street at 5:10 pm. The bar is about three feet wide, so if you want a drink your best bet is to step in front of someone when they’re not looking. Reggae isn’t really my thing, but I don’t mind it as long as I can breathe or move to the groove of a different beat… not wince as people step all over my feet. If you enjoy the sensation of being a sardine and want to be the imperious braggart who enjoys excessive hair gel, over-sized glasses, Izod sweaters, scarves indoors and appletinis, this is the place for you.

Okay, not so enormous and not so roomy, but in all other respects, this place is killer. The class of Central Kitchen has billowed upstairs in plumes, and results in a lounge that’s a mix of schmancy 90’s movie New York loft and that oriental rug store off the beaten path in the Jerusalem market, tarnished silver platters and all. Yes, it’s loud; yes, covers suck; yes, if you get there after 10pm on a Saturday night, there’s nary a square inch that won’t be awash with hipsters. However: all can be avoided by going early, the slightly pricey cocktails are pristine and delicious, and the blissfully cheap food is pitch perfect for loungy cocktail-absorbing. Crusty bread, olives, white bean dip, and those pickled shallots that elevate the tuna-fish-style pork rillettes to heaven? Indeed, Enormous Room. I guess I just dig places that it takes more than two-and-a-half decades under your belt to appreciate.

Okay not to sound like a snob but… Finally… A drinking establishment that doesn’t constantly remind me that I’m sad I don’t live in NYC anymore! Why is so hard to find good lounge-y, slightly upscale without being filled by overdressed douchebags, but small and neighborhood-y feeling place that also has music you might want to dance to? That also has decent and somewhat interesting cocktails? Am I really asking for too much here? Okay, maybe I am. but the Enormous Room actually does bring it. So thanks guys, for making me 3% less sad that I left New York. I’ll be visiting you often. (and yes, I have successfully engrained myself as one of those NYC-is-better people. sorry Boston, I love you but I’m not in love with you!

I really dug this place. Came here with a buddy for a few drinks when I was in Boston, and we had a great time. The beers(and shots) are reasonable and tasty, the patrons were entertaining and well-heeled. The music was GOOD. The volume was RIGHT. I like the tiered setup, where a gang of friends could just sorta lounge together and enjoy a night. If I lived in this neck of the woods, I’d be clocking some hours here. This is the type of place that I’d love to DJ at, too. Seems like the people were into the music, and even though it was more of a ‘lounge’ environment there were the occasional dancing folks as well. A well put-together place that I will definitely visit again when I return to this wonderful city!

Great ambiance, great location, great drinks, great service. Beware– this place is hopping later at night! Fun place to go out with friends if you’re looking for a crowd, but if you’re looking for a quiet, comfortable environment with phenomenal music, go much earlier. In other words, great first-date place first half of the night, perfect third-date place around 11. …if you know what I mean. If you don’t, then you probably shouldn’t be dating.

Oh Enormous Room — I love love love the concept of this place. Hip lounge, good music — couches. Great place for a first date but remember to go EARLY! We arrived around 8:30 and ordered drinks, got a great seat on one of the couches. Music was great and not too loud so we could chat a little bit… overall, great place for a first date. By the time we left, it was starting to fill up, the music was louder and it was a full fledged par-tay of hipsters way cooler than me… or at least that’s what they thought. I’d go again. Certainly on my list of 1st date locations.

Why would you call yourself this when you’re not? I don’t know. Why do skinny girls say they’re fat when… they’re not? Spend an hour or 3 here pondering such questions on comfy platform-type things with plush cushions. Don’t bother trying to dance. We need the space for the long line to drinks at the tiny bar. Enhance your mediation with a movie screened over a brick wall. Try the signature cocktail – it’s very tasty. They dare to play things like the Stone Roses right after Michael Jackson. Points for that. But I repeat, don’t come here to dance.

Went here last night and it was really meh. Beats staying at home, but it wasn’t so good. I see people complaining about the cover. I don’t mind paying $ 5 if it means I get to go to a cool bar and listen to good music. The music here, however, kinda sucked. The DJ was playing the same type of music all night(hip-hop, r&b, that sort of thing) and he wasn’t even doing an awesome job at it. The crowd was not really my scene either, I’d say. There were some ladies in their 40s having their own boogie down next to us and some creepy guys hitting on them. There were some frat bros busting out decidedly white-boy moves, such as the lawn mower. There were drunk girls wearing party tops. There were some sistahs dancing up on tables and there were also some real sketchy short French guys who snuck out for a smoke and complained about how there were no salopes up in there– bitches, French is not a lost language. People still speak it, it is alive and kicking! I bet this place is really chill with the right DJ playing– the couches are awesome and comfortable and the drink selection is not bad. But I was not blown away last night, for sho.

The Enormous Room and Central Kitchen totally exceeded my expectations. Went there for a private party in early evening and had tons of top notch hor d’oeuvres including salmon and crème fraîche on a potato chip, mini quesidilla with avocado and diced tomatoes, and oysters with hollandaise. The service was great and the cocktail selection was completely satisfying. I found God in Small Pieces(basically a pomegranate margarita) to be one of my favorite drinks in a long time. Definitely check out this place if you’re hosting a private party(and consider hiring a band). Unforgettable!

Hmm. No signage out front… just a door with a red elephant on it. Let’s go up, shall we? Oh…$ 5.00 cover? This better be worth it… Erm…ok, not my scene, but a solid three stars for sheer uniqueness. The place was PACKED, I mean, to the brim packed on a Friday night. I wanted a drink but the line to the bar was not budging. Finally a waitress came round and I screamed my drink order in her ear. I’m surprised she got it right considering the music is pumping so loudly that I wasn’t able to hear myself think let alone understand what I was thinking. It has a Moraccan theme of sorts… low seating, throw pillows, basically sit on the floor… normally I would not be adverse to this, but it’s a BAR. That means drunk people spill sh1t all over the place. Pardon me for being picky, but I’ll stand. That aside, the vibe here is cool and the drinks are good… it’s a place to be seen… cause you can’t be heard!

There is something about going into a place that doesn’t even have an ounce of a sign outside of it other than a red elephant painted on the door, that just makes you feel like you know somebody high up in society when you are walking in here… when really you don’t know anyone, but you will pay a $ 5 cover to be in a place that makes you feel like you do! I hate covers so that was a turn off for me, and then this«enormous» room which definitely describes its look, since it really is just one giant room with some stage like seating areas and some booths, and then some random persian style rugs and pillows on the ground for lounging(but i wonder how often they clean those things??? this place people get wasted! and i’m sure make out on them a lot and things like that too, so i’ll pretend and say they clean them heh). But with this enormous room there is the tiniest bar ever. It is like a drive up window in size only the line takes way way longer than any fast food chain place, but the drinks are pretty affordable which is nice. Definitely one of the most diverse groups of people I have see anywhere in New England so far, and being someone who studies race and ethnicity that was a big big plus for me! But the music could have been a little better, especially for a $ 5 cover going to a DJ that probably uses Genius in Itunes to make his playlist.

Enormous Room makes me feel weird. I went here a couple Wednesdays ago to meet up with classmates. I arrived at around 9pm to find an(enormous) room — filled with people making out. Everywhere. You couldn’t even dilute the making out people into the general crowd. Half the crowd was tongue-locked, and the other half looked on in horror. Also, the music was loud, and the beer expensive.

Conclusion: I am just too old for this place. And they should rename it to «Small cluttered club». Music blares too loud for me to converse with anyone and it just gets way too crowded. I truly feel bad for waitresses who always have to fight through the crowd to serve customers. First, I sat on the chair, facing the wall. Hence I had crowd behind. It was pretty much pathway right behind me. As a result, people were rubbing their asses on my back as they walked by. Not a pleasant feeling. My friends rave this place for selection of their music. But I find it mediocre. Just as same selection as elsewhere. If you are young and willing to fight to keep your elbow room, this place is it. I am not too far from needing a cane and viagra, this place is just too exhausting to me.(Exhaustion comes from shouting talk and fighting to keep my space) However, I give big, big kudos to the waitresses for their backbreaking job.
