We definitely need to find a way to have this property kept up by the historical society.

This is the grave site of Thomas and Martha Mitchel. Thomas Finley Mitchell was a Colonel in the Mexican-American War. In 1860, he was the first American to arrive in the community now known as Canyon Country, located in the city of Santa Clarita. He built a miner’s shack on his property located in Sand Canyon and later he replaced the miner’s shack with a house made of adobe bricks called the Mitchell Adobe. His wife, Martha(Taylor) Mitchell, started a school in the kitchen of her home with four of her own children and six other students. The school eventually led to the formation the Sulphur Springs School District, the second oldest district in all of Los Angeles County. The remains of the Adobe was moved, and later restored, to its current location at Heritage Junction Historic Park in Newhall.
