Great coffee shop in Carlsbad! Im not a local but when visiting family in San Diego, we make it a point to visit Maureen and Scott, the owners of Coffee Express. I had the pleasure of meeting Maureen and Scott before they opened their coffee shop this year, and proudly gave them samples of our coffee, we are coffee roasters in Northern Ca. They loved our coffee and use it in their shop. We are honored! Check out this gem at the train station, you won’t be disappointed. Great coffee, service and location!

I was traveling the state via Amtrak, and I stopped in Carlsbad. There is a small outdoor coffee hub right at the train station, oddly enough not very common with most of the train stops. I decided to have lunch in Carlsbad and spend my day there. Waiting for the next train I stopped at Coffee Express. The place is so convenient right on the train platform, the couple behind he counter were very nice, and offer a great cup of coffee. Sometimes train platforms are empty and as a single woman I am concerned about safety, although Carlsbad itself seemed to be a safe community, it was comforting to talk the couple (the owners?) while I waited. They had snack items, but for me it was all about the coffee. I love a good drip coffee, and they had one called Big and Bold which was so good I did not need sweetener. I did not think it would be appropriate to ask what brand they use, but I could drink this coffee without cream or sugar. There is that big named coffee company everyone goes to, but I am not a fan of their drip coffee it tastes very bitter, so I have to mask the flavor with cream and sugar. I prefer black coffee to save on the extra 40 calories or so.
Pricing was consistent with other coffee houses, considering they coffee hub is right on the platform they do not gouge customers. BTW-​there is a local train service and big ol’ Amtrak that stop here, the beach is a few blocks away.
