This review is specifically for the $ 5 Hip hop class on Friday. As much as I want to be, I’m not a dancer. I have taken Zumba classes but that’s about it. When I heard about this class, I was hoping I could get some cardio and learn something new. I went in to their reception and asked specifically whether a beginner would be able to catch up in that class and they said yes. So I went in. Studio C is rather small, with covered wires running on the floor. It’s not that clean either. That would not be a problem if there wasn’t 15 – 18 of us and if we didn’t have to crawl on the floor and put our faces close to the ground. Which we did. On to the class itself, this is not a beginner class. At the beginning we did a bit of zumba and stretching, which I loved. Then we went on and learned this super fast and complicated choreograph(for me at least) and I couldn’t catch up at all. Instead of getting cardio I was getting frustrated with myself. The teacher wasn’t helpful with new beginner student either. All the people in that class that I talked to or watched seemed to have some experience with dancing and I was the odd ball. I wish the receptionist warned me about the level of this class, but for 5 bucks to try it out, I guess it wasn’t that bad. All in all, I would only recommend this class if you are at an intermediate level in dancing. I’m sticking to Yoga One next door for now.

Finally a dance studio that offers quality adult ballet classes at different levels that are challenging for those who had years of training as a child and teenager and are trying to get back into it. Very reasonably priced for adults, too. The teachers I have met there are knowledgeable and great at what they’re doing.

I used to be a dancer, 7 days a week in class, ballet company; the whole 9 yards. After 5 years of not taking a dance class but just every now and then– I found myself here. I was very happy with both the classes I’ve taken. The contemporary kicked my butt… hard, but the instructor was very nice and helped me with everything I needed. They’re very accommodating and will be a great studio for any beginner or an old dancer like myself! I will be returning!

I’m not a dancer nor do I have aspirations to be one and it’s for that reason I found myself here. A sister of a of the instructors was working on a new dance piece and for it she specifically need untrained dancers will to be fools in front of recording equipment. Of course I signed up. I can’t speak to the classes here, but now that I know it’s there I’d recommend checking them out. It’s easy to find in Plaza Midwood tucked right next door to Yoga One. The whole space is clean and well organized space with studios spaces in various sizes. I had a blast participating in the artistic exercise in part because I found Open Door a welcoming and relaxed environment that I would want if I was a student.

The studio has moved one street over since this was created. It is now 1318 Central Avenue — a little set back from street. When I first moved to Charlotte at 22, it was a challenge to find a dance studio where I didn’t feel ridiculously out of place at my age or ability. I was in an awkward stage — not a competitive high schooler anymore but not a beginning adult either. Many adult classes at other studios are filled with dancers who are just getting started. I wanted to feel comfortable somewhere, drop-in as I’m able with my busy schedule, but still be challenged. I found that perfect place in Open Door Studios. Knowledgeable and friendly teachers, marley floors, workshop opportunities, performance opportunities, and convenient location.

They updated the online scheduler to include clearly marked levels. Thats a boost for me.
